Ankara Airport to Cappadocia: Transfer, Bus and Tuz Gölü
Short answer: Göreme, in the middle of Cappadocia, is about 324 km from Ankara Esenboğa Airport (ESB), roughly 3½ hours by road. Our private transfer is the simplest way: from €270 per vehicle (Mercedes Vito, up to 6 passengers) to Göreme, Ürgüp or Uçhisar, and the exact price for your address is shown before you pay. There is no direct bus from the airport. The public route is the Havaş coach or EGO bus 442 to the AŞTİ bus station, then an intercity coach to Nevşehir or Göreme, which takes about 3 hours and may end with a local shuttle. Lake Tuz lies on the way, but a photo stop is not a standard part of our transfer, so ask us on WhatsApp before booking.

Cappadocia is a long way from Ankara's airport, so it pays to choose the right option before you fly. This guide compares the transfer, the taxi and the coach-plus-bus route, explains the Lake Tuz stop, and lists the main site fees and opening hours.
Ankara Airport to Cappadocia: Your Options
| Option | Journey time | Cost | Changes | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | About 3½ hours | from €270 per vehicle | None | Families, groups, luggage, late arrivals |
| Airport taxi | About 3½ hours | Agree the fare before you set off | None | Arriving without a booking |
| Airport coach + intercity coach | Airport to AŞTİ, then about 3 hours | Airport coach ≈€4.50 (₺250) per person, plus the intercity ticket (₺700–950 at the time of writing) | At least one, at AŞTİ, often a second at Nevşehir | Light luggage and plenty of time |
| Train | About 7 hours on the Kayseri line, to a station outside the main villages | Set by TCDD | No direct link into Cappadocia | Not practical for this trip |
Distances and drive times come from routing data and from our route planning. Some transfer sites quote about 298 to 299 km and 3 hours 12 minutes to 3½ hours, depending on the start and end point. Add time for traffic around Ankara and for roadworks.
Option 1: Private Transfer
This is the one ride that replaces the whole chain of coaches and shuttles. Our driver waits just outside the arrivals exit of the terminal you land at. After you land, we send the exact meeting point and a short video on WhatsApp, so you do not need to look for anyone. Our drivers speak English.
The price is from €270 per vehicle, not per person, and the exact price for your address is shown before you pay. There is no extra charge for traffic or flight delays. A Mercedes Vito takes up to 6 passengers with luggage, a V-Class VIP is available for a smaller party, and a Sprinter suits larger groups. Child seats are available on request. Our price covers Göreme, Ürgüp and Uçhisar. If your hotel is in another Cappadocia village, give us its name when you ask, and the price for that address is shown before you pay. Compare other routes on the transfer prices page, or start from the Ankara Airport Transfer page.
According to routing data, the quickest road runs via Aksaray; the road through Kırıkkale and Kırşehir is shorter on the map but slower. The vehicle is private, with no other passengers picked up on the way. Three and a half hours is a long time after a flight, and if you would like a break on the way, ask us on WhatsApp before booking.
Option 2: Airport Taxi
Official taxis wait just outside both arrivals exits around the clock, with no night rate. Within Ankara they run on the meter, but for a trip of more than 300 km you should agree the price, and what it covers, before you get in. See our Ankara Airport taxi prices guide for how the meter works in the city. For this distance a booked transfer has the advantage that the price is settled in advance and shown before you pay.
Option 3: Airport Coach and Intercity Coach
There is no direct bus from Esenboğa to Cappadocia. The intercity coaches start at AŞTİ, Ankara's main bus station, so the public route has two legs.
- Esenboğa to AŞTİ. The Havaş coach goes to AŞTİ only, in about 45 minutes, and costs ≈€4.50 (₺250) per person. EGO bus 442 also reaches AŞTİ and costs ≈€2.50 (₺150), but you pay with a Başkent Kart that is not sold at the airport. Both are explained in our Ankara Airport bus guide.
- AŞTİ to Cappadocia. According to a ticketing site on 22 October 2026, at least seven companies run coaches from AŞTİ to Nevşehir, about 34 departures a day, taking about 3 hours at ₺700 to 950. The same site sells AŞTİ to Göreme Otogarı as a separate route, from ₺700. Check on your ticket whether the coach ends in Göreme or in Nevşehir, because some coaches end in Nevşehir, with a local shuttle (servis) for the last part.
Allow roughly five hours or more door to door once you add the walk to the coach, the wait for a departure and the final leg to your hotel. That works for a traveller with a small bag and a free day. With children, large suitcases or a late landing it is a hard way to arrive.
Rail does not help. There is no railway into Cappadocia. The Ankara to Kayseri regional train, listed at three a day and about 7 hours, stops at Himmetdede, outside the main villages, according to a timetable site in June 2026, so check TCDD before planning around it.
Cappadocia also has its own airport, Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV), about 43 km from Göreme and 49 km from Ürgüp according to a secondary source. We cover the road transfer from Ankara, so check airline schedules for flights separately.
Lake Tuz on the Way
Tuz Gölü (Lake Tuz) is Turkey's second-largest lake and lies on the same corridor as the road to Cappadocia. It is shared by the provinces of Ankara (Şereflikoçhisar), Aksaray (Eskil) and Konya (Cihanbeyli). The visitor facilities are on the Ankara side, about 15 km before Şereflikoçhisar on the E-90, at roughly 170 km from the airport. Entry is free, and parking costs a small fee, according to a June 2026 travel article.
- What you see changes with the season. After heavy rain the lake turned pink in July 2026, according to a press report. By early October the water had retreated and salt crystals were showing near Eskil.
- The lake is shrinking. Press reports put its area at about 93,000 hectares around 1987 to 1990 and about 9,200 hectares in 2025. It has been a Special Environmental Protection Area since 2000.
- Allow time. A stop adds to a drive of about 3½ hours.
A photo stop at Lake Tuz is not a standard service on our transfer. If you would like one, ask us on WhatsApp before booking. By public transport the lake is awkward: coaches from AŞTİ go to Şereflikoçhisar town, which lies about 15 km past the lakeshore facilities, so you would need onward transport. For more on the lake from the Ankara side, see our day trips from Ankara guide.
Where to Stay: Göreme, Ürgüp and Uçhisar
Our transfer price covers three bases, and all three work for the main sights. Give us the hotel name when you book, so that the driver has the exact address.
- Göreme: about 43 km from Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV), and the base for the Göreme Open-Air Museum.
- Ürgüp: about 49 km from the same airport.
- Uçhisar: also covered by our transfer price.
Nevşehir town is about 26 km from the airport, and some intercity coaches end there. Plan at least one night in Cappadocia. After a long drive from Ankara there is little time for the sights on the day you arrive.
Cappadocia Sites: Hours and Fees
At the time of writing the Ministry of Culture and Tourism museum portal lists winter hours of 08:00 to 17:00 for the Cappadocia sites, from 1 October to 1 April. Winter hours are usually shorter than summer ones, so check muze.gov.tr before you go. The fees below are for foreign visitors.
| Site | Foreign visitors | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Göreme Open-Air Museum | 20 euros in 2026, rising to 22 euros from 1 April 2027 | Entry to the museum site. |
| Zelve-Paşabağları | 12 euros in 2026, rising to 13 euros from 1 April 2027 | Separate ticket. |
| Kaymaklı Underground City | 13 euros in 2026, rising to 15 euros from 1 April 2027 | Separate ticket. |
| Derinkuyu Underground City | 13 euros in 2026, rising to 15 euros from 1 April 2027 | Separate ticket. |
| Museumpass Kapadokya | 75 euros in the 2027 tariff | Valid for 3 days, covering Nevşehir and Aksaray. |
The 2027 tariff starts on 1 April 2027. In the 2027 tariff the Dark Church at Göreme has its own ticket, at 7 euros. If you plan to see several sites over three days, work out whether the pass pays for itself.
Landing Late or Leaving Early
A late landing makes the long drive harder. Our driver tracks your flight, so a delay does not change the pickup or add a charge. If your plane arrives after midnight, our Arriving in Ankara at night guide explains the options, and Meeting your driver at Ankara Airport shows where to find the driver. If you would rather sleep before the drive, stay in Ankara first and travel on in the morning (see Ankara Airport to the city centre).
Back to Ankara Airport
For the return, use the booking form on our Ankara Airport Transfer page and enter your Cappadocia hotel as the pickup point. Allow about 3½ hours for the drive, and arrive at the airport in good time for your check-in, as the airline advises. If you want to combine the trip with a stop at Lake Tuz, ask us on WhatsApp before booking.
