Anıtkabir stands on a hill in Ankara's Çankaya district. It is a memorial, a museum and a ceremonial site run by the military, so a visit has a few rules that differ from an ordinary sight. This guide covers the hours, the gates, the museum, the security check, the special days this autumn and how to reach it from ESB.

Opening Hours and Entry
The summer hours end on 31 October, so a visit after that date means a 16:00 close. The official site says Anıtkabir is open every day between these hours. The security check at the gate can take time when it is busy, so arrive well before closing.
Entry is free, and so is the museum under the Hall of Honour. On ceremony days the public is admitted only after the official ceremony has finished; the official site posted such notices for 2026 on dates including 23 April, 19 May, 30 August and 13 October. On days with protocol visits, entry can also be restricted for some hours, so look at the announcements page before you travel.
Getting From Esenboğa Airport to Anıtkabir
Google gives 28.7 km and 32 minutes by road. The Ankaray line runs west from Kızılay to the monument, and Maltepe, Kızılay and Çankaya are the nearest districts with a price page. The table compares your options.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | About 30 min | from €36 per vehicle (Çankaya or Kızılay) | None | Luggage, families, late arrivals, a drop at your hotel first |

Coach and bus fares are per person. The transfer price is per vehicle. EGO fares are those published from 23 August 2026.
Private Transfer
Our driver tracks your flight and waits just outside the arrivals exit. After you land, the driver sends the exact meeting point and a short video on WhatsApp, so you do not need to look for anyone. Drivers speak English. The price is per vehicle, not per person, and there is no extra charge for traffic or flight delays. A Mercedes Vito takes up to 6 passengers with luggage, a V-Class VIP is available for smaller groups, and a Sprinter suits larger parties. Child seats are available on request.
There is no Anıtkabir route page, so book to your hotel or district. The nearest pages are Kızılay and Çankaya, both from €36 per vehicle, and Maltepe, a district that Anıtkabir partly falls within. If you want to be dropped near the monument itself, tell us on WhatsApp before booking and we will check the access. Cars are stopped for an ID check at the gate, according to visitor guides, and are not admitted on ceremony days. Anıtkabir does not take large bags, so go to your hotel first.
Taxi
Official taxis wait outside arrivals around the clock. The Ankara tariff has no night rate, and a ride to Çankaya works out at about €22–27 (₺1,250–1,500) on the meter. Waiting time is charged on top. See our Ankara Airport taxi prices guide for the full tariff.
Coach, Bus 442 and the Ankaray Metro
The AnkaraAir coach (formerly BelkoAir) runs 24 hours a day via Kızılay to AŞTİ for ≈€4.50 (₺250). From Kızılay, Anadolu/Anıtkabir is three stops west on Ankaray. The Havaş coach (≈€4.50 / ₺250) goes only to AŞTİ bus station, and from there the stop is the fourth on Ankaray. City bus 442 (≈€2.50 / ₺150) also stops at Kızılay.
There is no Başkent Kart seller at the airport, so most visitors pay ≈€0.85 (₺46) per ride with a contactless bank card. A Başkent Kart fare is ≈€0.70 (₺40). Our Ankara Airport bus guide has every stop and timetable, and the Başkent Kart guide explains the card.
Reaching Anıtkabir by Ankaray
The Ankaray line (A1) runs from AŞTİ to Dikimevi, with 11 stations. The stop for Anıtkabir was long known as Tandoğan. The square above it was renamed Anadolu Meydanı in 2015, and the station is now Anadolu/Anıtkabir, so older maps, guides and drivers may still say Tandoğan. They are the same stop, and there is no separate Tandoğan station on the line.
From the station, visitor guides describe a walk uphill to the monument. Estimates range from about 10 to 20 minutes depending on the source, and one guide gives about 600 m on foot from the Tandoğan car park to the start of the Road of Lions. Wear comfortable shoes.
The Anadolu/Anıtkabir station is sometimes closed on the governor's order or for large events: it was closed from 18 August 2025 until further notice, and on 14 September 2025 from 13:00, according to press reports. Check EGO on the day if you plan to use it, especially around 29 October and 10 November.
Gates
The official site does not publish a gate list. Visitor guides describe two entrances, one on the Tandoğan (Anadolu Meydanı) side, on Gençlik Caddesi, and one on the Anıttepe side. The Tandoğan side leads to the Road of Lions and is the natural choice if you arrive by metro.
EGO Line 402
EGO line 402, the "Başkent Kültür Turu" (capital culture tour), calls at Anadolu Meydanı (Anıttepe) and at Hedef Sokak on Akdeniz Caddesi in Yücetepe. It runs every day from 10:00 to 17:00 and links Ulus (İlk Meclis), the castle, Hamamönü and Güvenpark, so it suits a day that combines the old town and Anıtkabir; see our Ankara Castle and museum guide and Ankara in a day.
What You Will See
Anıtkabir was built between 1944 and 1953, and Atatürk's body was moved here from the Ethnography Museum in a state ceremony on 10 November 1953. The design came from an international competition, won by Professor Emin Onat and Associate Professor Orhan Arda. The site covers about 750,000 square metres, most of it the Peace Park (Barış Parkı).
The Road of Lions
The approach is the Road of Lions (Aslanlı Yol), which is 262 m long and paved with travertine. It is lined with 24 seated lion statues in the Hittite style by Hüseyin Özkan; the official handbook says they stand for the 24 Oghuz tribes.
The Ceremonial Plaza and the Hall of Honour
The road opens onto the Ceremonial Plaza (Tören Meydanı), which holds 15,000 people. You then climb to the Hall of Honour (Şeref Holü) and enter through bronze doors. The symbolic sarcophagus is a single marble block of about 40 tonnes from Osmaniye. The burial chamber lies 7 m below and is not part of a normal visit.
The Atatürk and War of Independence Museum
The museum lies under the Hall of Honour and covers about 3,000 square metres. You enter through the Misak-ı Millî Tower, on the right as you face the monument from the plaza. It has four parts:
- Atatürk's personal belongings, including gifts from foreign statesmen.
- Panoramas and large oil paintings of Gallipoli, Sakarya and the Great Offensive.
- Eighteen vaulted galleries on the years 1919 to 1938.
- Atatürk's private library, with 3,123 books on show.
The galleries have captions in Turkish and English, and museum entry is free. A vision hall in the Mehmetçik Tower shows documentaries, and the Anıtkabir Association runs a souvenir hall in the Müdafaa-i Hukuk Tower.
The tomb of İsmet İnönü, in the west colonnade, opens only on announced dates, such as 24 to 30 September 2026, so you cannot count on seeing it.
Rules and Security
Anıtkabir is run by the Anıtkabir Command, and visits follow its regulation. The useful points are these:
- Security check: expect your bag to go through a scan and a check at the gate. Large bags and suitcases are not taken in, so leave luggage at the hotel.
- Dress: there is no official dress code on the site, but dress respectfully, with shoulders and knees covered where you can.
- Behaviour: keep your voice down, follow the staff and soldiers' instructions, and treat the Hall of Honour as a place of remembrance. Staff stop political banners, slogans and speeches, according to press reports.
- Photography: follow the signs and staff in the Hall of Honour and the museum. Professional filming or photography in the museum needs permission from the Anıtkabir Command.
- Drones: do not fly a drone. It is a military-run national memorial.
The honour guard is on duty at the mausoleum. The official site publishes no schedule for the changing of the guard, so do not plan your day around a particular time.
29 October and 10 November
The two busiest days at Anıtkabir are 29 October (Republic Day) and 10 November, the anniversary of Atatürk's death. Press reports give about 8.2 million visits in 2025, including about 1.1 million on 29 October and 1.2 million on 10 November. Expect long queues on both days.
- 29 October 2026 (Thursday): an official notice posted on 19 October says Anıtkabir opens to the public after the official ceremony and stays open until 22:00. In 2025 it opened to visitors around midday, according to the press, so do not plan a morning visit.
- 10 November 2026 (Tuesday): no official notice had been posted when we checked on 25 October. In 2025 the site opened to the public after the official ceremony and stayed open until 22:00. The nationwide moment of silence is at 09:05, the time of Atatürk's death in 1938, when sirens sound. Check the announcements page for the 2026 arrangements.
On these dates, cars are not admitted and the Anadolu/Anıtkabir station may be closed, so allow extra time. Check the official announcements and the EGO website before you travel.
How Long to Allow
There is no official figure. Allow about two hours for the Road of Lions, the plaza, the Hall of Honour and the museum, and more if you read the galleries closely. After 1 November the site closes at 16:00, so an early start is wise. The museum is the part that takes the most time.
Guides, Services and Accessibility
- Guiding: groups can book a free guided tour in advance through the Protocol office. A paid audio guide is available in six languages.
- Accessibility: the official site says you can visit without barriers, but gives no details. If you need step-free access, call the Anıtkabir Command on +90 312 231 79 75 first.
If you only have a stopover, our Ankara Airport to city centre guide shows how to get into town, and day trips from Ankara covers places beyond the city. To compare prices, see transfer prices.
