Ankara in a Day: What to See on a Layover or Short Stop

Updated 23 October 2026

Short answer: With 3 to 5 hours in the city, stay in Ulus (the castle lanes, Hamamönü and the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations) and add Kocatepe Mosque and Kızılay on the way back. With a full day, finish at the Atakule observation deck, which is open until 22:00 at the time of writing. Esenboğa (ESB) is about 30 minutes from Ulus by road. Our private transfer starts from €33 per vehicle (Mercedes Vito, up to 6 passengers), and the exact price for your address is shown before you pay. The public options are the AnkaraAir coach (≈€4.50 / ₺250) and city bus 442 (≈€2.50 / ₺150), each about an hour. Allow a gap of at least 8 hours between flights if you want 3 hours in town.

Ankara is the capital of Türkiye, and most visitors see it only from the airport road. A few hours is enough for a good first look, because the sights are close together: the old citadel quarter of Ulus, the mosque and the busy avenues of Kızılay, and the Çankaya hill with Atakule tower. This guide gives a plan for a short stop and one for a full day, with the real time costs of getting in and out of Esenboğa.

Times in the table are the time you actually spend in town. The next section shows how much longer your gap between flights has to be.

How Much Time Do You Really Have?

The city is close, but a layover has fixed costs at both ends.

Add those up and 3 hours in the city needs a gap of roughly 8 hours between flights, while 5 hours in the city needs about 10. Below 7 hours, stay at the airport. Leaving the terminal also means entering Türkiye, so check the visa rules for your nationality on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website before you plan a trip into town. If your bags are checked through to your next flight, ask the airline whether you can collect them, and what happens to them if you leave the airport.

Getting Into Town From Esenboğa

Esenboğa is about 30 km north-east of Kızılay. Our Ankara Airport to city centre guide compares every option in full.

Private transfer

Our driver waits just outside the arrivals exit, and after you land we send the exact meeting point and a short video on WhatsApp. Our drivers speak English. The price is per vehicle, not per person, and the exact figure for your address is shown before you pay. There is no extra charge for traffic or flight delays.

A Mercedes Vito takes up to 6 passengers with luggage, a V-Class VIP is available for a smaller party, and a Sprinter suits larger groups. Child seats are available on request. A driver who waits for you while you sightsee is not a standard service, so if you want that, ask us on WhatsApp before booking. The easier way back is a second transfer from your last stop, which you can book on the same form (see the last section).

Taxi

Taxis wait outside arrivals, and Ankara taxis have no night rate. The metered fare is about €19–23 (₺1,050–1,300) to Ulus, ≈€21–25 (₺1,150–1,400) to Kızılay and ≈€22–27 (₺1,250–1,500) to Çankaya or Tunalı in normal traffic. See Ankara Airport taxi prices for how the meter works.

Coach and city bus

The AnkaraAir coach (≈€4.50 / ₺250) runs around the clock, and its stops include AKM, the nearest to Ulus, and Kızılay, opposite Güvenpark. EGO city bus 442 (≈€2.50 / ₺150) is the only public bus that reaches Ulus, at the İlk Meclis stop, and it also calls at Ankara Tren Garı and Güvenpark in Kızılay. Both take about an hour. The Başkent Kart is not sold at the airport, so carry some lira in cash and a contactless bank card. Details are in our Ankara Airport bus guide.

Ulus: Castle, Hamamönü and the Museum

Ulus is the old centre and the best use of a short stop, because the main sights are close together around the citadel. The lanes inside Ankara Castle are open all the time and entry is free. The inner castle and walls are usually open in daytime hours, but the opening times we found came from travel sites rather than an official source, so treat them as a guide. The lanes are narrow and partly closed to cars, so a driver will normally stop at the castle entrance.

Below the citadel, Hamamönü is a restored Ottoman quarter built around the 15th-century Karacabey Hamam, with craft shops and cafés on Sanat Sokağı. It is busiest at weekends, and it is a separate address from the castle, so tell your driver which you want.

The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations (Anadolu Medeniyetleri Müzesi) is the one indoor sight worth planning around. At the time of writing muze.gov.tr listed it as open every day from 08:30 to 17:30, with the ticket office closing at 16:45. Winter hours are usually shorter, so check muze.gov.tr before you go. The foreign-visitor ticket is 12 euros in 2026, rising to 13 euros from 1 April 2027. The Ankara Hall and the Classical Hall are closed for maintenance from 14 September 2026 to 2 March 2027, and the rest of the museum stays open. Allow about an hour. Our guide to Ankara Castle, Hamamönü and the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations has the full detail.

Line 402, the EGO culture tour, is a loop of about 13 km that takes 45 minutes. At the time of writing it left every day from 10:00 to 17:00, roughly every 40 minutes, and called at İlk Meclis, Ankara Kalesi, the Hamamönü stops (Tacettin Dergahı and Numune Hastanesi), Güvenpark in Kızılay and Anadolu Meydanı. Bus 442 from the airport also stops at İlk Meclis, where you can change. Check ego.gov.tr on the day, as timetables change.

Kızılay and Kocatepe Mosque

Kızılay is the commercial and transport heart of modern Ankara, with Güvenpark, the Ankaray and metro interchange and plenty of places to eat. It is the natural lunch stop between Ulus and Çankaya, and both the AnkaraAir coach and bus 442 call here.

Kocatepe Mosque is a large landmark in Kızılay. It was built between 1967 and 1987 and has four minarets of about 88 metres. Sources differ on its capacity, so we do not quote one. As in any working mosque, cover your shoulders and knees, women cover their hair, take your shoes off and avoid prayer times. If the doors are closed, you can still see the mosque from the courtyard.

Çankaya: Atakule, Kuğulu Park and Tunalı

Atakule is a 125-metre tower with an observation deck. At the time of writing the deck was open daily from 10:00 to 22:00, though the hours can change with the season, and tickets were ₺600 for adults and ₺400 for students, over-65s and disabled visitors, with children aged 0 to 6 free. A package with the Green Terrace and a jumping simulation was ₺800 (₺600 reduced). Tickets are sold at the information desk in the tower, and cards are accepted. Prices are set by Atakule and can change, so see atakule.com.tr.

It is the only sight on this list that is open in the evening, which makes it a good last stop before dinner or a late flight. Nearby, Kuğulu Park and Tunalı Hilmi Avenue are the places nearby for a walk, a coffee or dinner. Our Çankaya transfer covers this area; without one, a taxi from Kızılay is the simplest way to reach it.

A Plan for 3 to 5 Hours

  1. Arrive in Ulus: the driver stops at the castle entrance and you start in the lanes.
  2. Walk the citadel and down to Hamamönü: about 1½ hours with photographs and a coffee. The way down is easier than the way up.
  3. Museum of Anatolian Civilizations (optional): an hour inside. If you skip it, use the time for lunch in Hamamönü.
  4. With 5 hours: take line 402 or a taxi to Kızılay, walk through Güvenpark and, if the doors are open, look at Kocatepe Mosque.
  5. Back to the airport: leave the city about four hours before an international departure, so that you arrive about three hours ahead.

Do not try to add Çankaya to a 3-hour visit. It adds a third district and a taxi ride, and the traffic on the way back to the airport is the part of the plan that you cannot control.

A Plan for a Full Day

With a full day, the order matters more than the list.

Anıtkabir, the mausoleum of Atatürk and the national memorial, is the best-known sight in Ankara, and entry is free; check the official site, anitkabir.tsk.tr, for current hours before you plan around it.

If you arrive late at night and have the next morning free, see Arriving in Ankara at night for what still runs from the airport. For trips beyond the city, such as Beypazarı, Hattusa or Lake Tuz, read Day trips from Ankara, and for Cappadocia see Ankara Airport to Cappadocia.

Luggage on a Short Stop

Do not carry suitcases around the old town. If your hotel is on the way, ask our driver to stop there first. Otherwise the left-luggage office at Esenboğa is in the arrivals area of the domestic section and is open 24 hours a day, and you can pay cash or by card. Per bag for 24 hours it costs ≈€3 (₺180) for a small bag, ≈€6.50 (₺350) for a large one, ≈€11 (₺600) for XL and ≈€13.50 (₺750) for an XXL item. If you land at the international side, walk across to the domestic side. See the Ankara Airport arrival guide for the rest of the terminal.

Back to the Airport

The return is the part that decides whether a layover works. Book your ride back before you set off, not on the pavement at the last hour. We run one-way transfers from Ulus, Kızılay and Çankaya to the airport, with the price shown before you pay, and a return trip can be added on the same booking form. If you choose a coach or bus 442, leave a larger margin, because both are slower than a car in the rush hour. The AnkaraAir coach runs 24 hours a day, while bus 442 leaves only every two hours overnight. Our guide to meeting your driver explains the pickup at Esenboğa.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I need to see Ankara on a layover?

Plan on a gap of at least 8 hours between flights for about 3 hours in the city. That allows roughly an hour to leave the airport, about 30 to 40 minutes each way by road and three hours at the airport before an international departure. With less than 7 hours, stay at the airport.

What is the best thing to see in Ankara in 3 hours?

Ulus, the old town. The castle lanes, Hamamönü and, if you have time, the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations are all within walking distance of each other and about 30 minutes from Esenboğa by car.

How much is a transfer from Esenboğa Airport to Ulus or Kızılay?

Our private transfer starts from €33 per vehicle to Ulus and from €36 per vehicle to Kızılay (Mercedes Vito, up to 6 passengers). The exact price for your address is shown before you pay, and there is no extra charge for traffic or flight delays.

Can I leave my luggage at Ankara Airport?

Yes. Left luggage is in the arrivals area of the domestic section, open 24 hours a day. Per bag for 24 hours it costs ≈€3 (₺180) for a small bag and ≈€6.50 (₺350) for a large one, with larger sizes priced higher.

Is Atakule open in the evening?

At the time of writing the observation deck was open daily from 10:00 to 22:00, and the adult ticket was ₺600. Hours can change with the season, so check atakule.com.tr.

Can I do Ankara in a day without a car?

Yes. The AnkaraAir coach and bus 442 both reach the centre in about an hour, and EGO line 402 links Ulus, the castle, Hamamönü and Güvenpark in Kızılay between 10:00 and 17:00 at the time of writing. A private transfer saves the most time on a short stop.

Do I need a visa to leave the airport during a layover?

It depends on your nationality. Check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website before you travel, because leaving the terminal means entering Türkiye.

Will your driver wait while I sightsee?

Waiting time is not a standard part of our service, and our prices are one way. Ask us on WhatsApp before booking if you want a driver to wait. Most visitors book one transfer into town and a second one back to the airport.
