Ankara Airport: Taxi or Private Transfer? An Honest Comparison
Short answer: from Esenboğa to Kızılay, Çankaya, Bilkent or Çayyolu, a taxi on the meter is usually the cheaper car for one to four people with ordinary luggage: ≈€21–25 (₺1,150–1,400) to Kızılay against a private transfer from €36 per vehicle. The transfer comes out ahead for five or six people (two taxis to Kızılay cost ≈€41–50 / ₺2,300–2,800), for lots of luggage, for the south-west suburbs in heavy traffic and for anyone who wants the price shown before they pay. The airport road and the ring road are free of tolls, so the difference is the meter, the traffic and the number of cars you need.

Esenboğa is about 30 km from Kızılay, with no train or metro, so the real choice is between the rank outside arrivals and a driver you have booked. Here are the two side by side, with a plain account of where the taxi wins.
Esenboğa Taxi and Transfer Prices Side by Side
Taxi figures are the usual meter range in normal traffic from our Ankara airport taxi prices guide. Transfer prices are per vehicle (a Mercedes Vito for up to 6 passengers); the exact price for your date and pickup time is shown before you pay.
| Destination | Taxi on the meter | Private transfer | Cheaper for one car | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kızılay | ≈€21–25 (₺1,150–1,400) | from €36 per vehicle | Taxi | About 30 km; the taxi's best case |
| Çankaya | ≈€22–27 (₺1,250–1,500) | from €36 per vehicle | Taxi | Embassies and Tunalı Hilmi cafés |
| Bilkent | ≈€29–41 (₺1,600–2,300) | from €45 per vehicle | Taxi, but the top of the range nears the transfer | 38–46 km; city hospital and universities |
| Çayyolu | ≈€31–44 (₺1,750–2,450) | from €47 per vehicle | Taxi, by a narrow margin in traffic | 42–50 km; the furthest of the four |
The pattern is simple: the taxi is cheaper on all four routes, and the gap shrinks the further south-west you go. A taxi price is a range because the meter follows the road and the clock. A transfer price is one figure for the whole car.
What the Esenboğa Meter Really Adds Up To
Ankara's tariff, in force since 1 March 2026, is ≈€1.15 (₺65) to start, ≈€0.70 (₺40) per km, ≈€0.15 (₺7) a minute while the taxi is crawling or standing, and a minimum fare of ≈€3.50 (₺200). There is no night rate and nothing is added for airport pickups or luggage. In free-flowing traffic 30 km comes to ≈€23 (₺1,265) and 50 km to ≈€37 (₺2,065).
- Tolls: none. The airport road and the Ankara ring road are free, so unlike on some other airport runs there is no toll to add to either price.
- Traffic: the south-west corridor towards Bilkent, Ümitköy and Çayyolu is heavily congested from 07:30 to 09:30 and from 17:30 to 19:30. Every minute at a standstill adds ≈€0.15 (₺7), so an hour in a jam adds ≈€7.50 (₺420).
- Route: for Söğütözü, Çukurambar, Bilkent, Ümitköy, Çayyolu and Gölbaşı the driver either crosses the centre or takes the longer ring road, which adds 7–17 km to the meter.
- Transfer side: the price is per vehicle and there is no extra charge for traffic or flight delays.
To Söğütözü the taxi range is ≈€25–38 (₺1,400–2,100) and to Çukurambar ≈€25–39 (₺1,400–2,150), while a transfer to either is from €36. On a clear road the taxi is cheaper; at the top of its range it costs a little more than the transfer.
When the Taxi Is the Better Choice
For one or two people with light luggage heading to the centre, the rank is hard to beat. You walk out, take the car at the front of the queue and pay what the meter shows, which in normal traffic is below our transfer price to Kızılay, Ulus or Çankaya. There is nothing to book and nothing to cancel if your flight changes.
The taxi also suits you if:
- you are going to Kızılay, Ulus, Çankaya or the YHT station and the roads are quiet;
- you want to keep the cost down and are happy to carry enough lira (card payment becomes compulsory for every taxi in Turkey from 16 November 2026, with drivers having up to 15 days to sign up with a bank);
If cost is the only concern and you are travelling alone, the AnkaraAir coach is cheaper still at ≈€4.50 (₺250) per person, and two people pay ≈€9 (₺500). It takes about an hour and does not go to the door, so it is a trade of time and convenience for money. The Ankara airport bus guide has the stops.
When a Private Transfer Is the Better Choice
A transfer wins when the question is not only price. Your driver tracks your flight, waits just outside the arrivals exit and helps with the bags. After you land, they send the exact meeting point and a short video on WhatsApp, and they speak English. The price is per vehicle and shown before you pay, so a jammed Eskişehir Yolu cannot move it.
- Five or six people: one Vito instead of two taxis, covered below.
- A lot of luggage: a standard taxi takes up to four passengers and usually two or three suitcases. A Vito takes up to 6 passengers and 7 bags.
- Children: child seats cost five euros per seat, and you can request them when you book.
- The far south-west: Bilkent and Çayyolu are 38–50 km away, and a bad afternoon on the meter can close most of the gap.
- Business trips: if a meeting starts soon after landing, a driver who is already tracking your flight means no queue at the rank and one less thing to arrange.
- Longer runs: past the city the numbers cross over, as the next section shows.
Gölbaşı, Kızılcahamam and Beypazarı: Where the Numbers Cross
Beyond the suburbs the meter climbs fast, and the transfer starts to win on price as well as comfort.
| Destination | Taxi on the meter | Private transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Gölbaşı | ≈€33–49 (₺1,850–2,700) | from €49 per vehicle |
| Kızılcahamam | ≈€69–83 (₺3,850–4,600) | from €83 per vehicle |
| Beypazarı | ≈€91–110 (₺5,050–6,050) | from €83 per vehicle |
Gölbaşı still favours the taxi on a quiet road. Kızılcahamam is level at the top of the range, and for Beypazarı the transfer is the cheaper car even at the bottom of the taxi range.
Two Taxis or One Vito for Five or Six People
This is where the arithmetic turns. Five or six people with suitcases will not fit in one saloon car, so you pay two meter fares: ≈€41–50 (₺2,300–2,800) to Kızılay for both taxis. One Vito carries the whole group to Kızılay from €36 per vehicle, and the party arrives together at the same door. For a group of three or four with modest bags, a single taxi remains the cheaper choice. Larger parties can book a Sprinter. Every transfer is a private car.
Landing Late at Night
Both options work at 02:00. Taxis wait outside both arrivals exits around the clock and there is no night rate, so a night fare is the same meter as a daytime one. The AnkaraAir coach also runs 24 hours, but city bus 442 leaves the airport only at 00:01, 02:00 and 04:00 between midnight and 06:20. What a transfer adds at night is certainty: the driver is already tracking your landing, and there is no extra charge for a delayed flight. More in arriving in Ankara at night.
Uber and Taxi Apps at Esenboğa
Uber in Ankara calls licensed yellow taxis, which run on the meter, so an app does not change the fare logic: you pay the metered fare and can tip in the app. Uber says its rides from Esenboğa cost ≈€25 (₺1,410) on average for a typical 31-minute trip, which sits inside the Kızılay range above. BiTaksi also works in Ankara and takes foreign cards in the app. App taxis come from the city, so at the airport the rank outside arrivals is usually quicker.
How Each Option Works When You Walk Out of Arrivals
Taxi: Esenboğa has one terminal building with an international (Dış Hatlar) and a domestic (İç Hatlar) section. Taxis wait 24 hours a day just outside the arrivals exits of both. Take the car at the front of the queue, check that the meter starts as you leave the rank, and keep your hotel address on your phone. If no taxi is waiting, the airport taxi line is 0312 398 08 97. Ask for a receipt (fiş), which also helps if you need it for expenses. If a driver offers a fixed price or says the meter is broken, take the next car.
Private transfer: you book in advance and see the price before you pay. Your driver waits just outside the arrivals exit and, after you land, sends the exact meeting point and a short video on WhatsApp, so switch on mobile data or use the free airport Wi-Fi. Flying in via Istanbul with bags checked through means you land on the domestic side but come out of the international exit; our guide to meeting your driver at Ankara airport explains it. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before pickup.
Heading Back to Esenboğa
The comparison is much the same on the way back, with one extra risk: a flight does not wait for a slow taxi. From a hotel you can ask reception to call a cab, and the meter works in both directions, though from places such as AŞTİ the road back is a few kilometres longer. Clear-road driving from Kızılay takes about 25 to 35 minutes, but rush hour can double it, so leave a wide margin before an international flight.
If you fly abroad, check the temporary change to international bag drop, which has moved to the domestic terminal's check-in counters (entrance doors C and D) and arrive earlier than usual. A pre-booked car collects you at your hotel at the agreed time and drops you at departures, for example Kızılay to Ankara Airport or Çankaya to Ankara Airport.
Quick Decision List for Esenboğa
