Istanbul Airport to City Centre: Your Options and Route Guides
Istanbul has two international airports, and which one you land at shapes your whole journey into the city. Istanbul Airport (IST) is on the European side, about 40 km from Taksim and the old city. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side, around 45–50 km from the main tourist areas, and most trips from there cross the Bosphorus. Istanbul Airport (IST)
European side. The M11 metro runs from beneath the terminal to Gayrettepe, Havaist coaches serve Taksim, the old city and other districts, and the drive to the centre takes about 45–60 minutes outside rush hour.

Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW)
Asian side. The M4 metro runs straight to Kadıköy, Havabüs coaches go to Taksim and Kadıköy, and trips to the European side take about 60–90 minutes by road, depending on the Bosphorus crossing.
The four ways into the city
Metro
The cheapest option, and immune to road traffic. From IST, the M11 reaches Gayrettepe with connections to the M2; from SAW, the M4 goes to Kadıköy. Both need an Istanbulkart, involve changes for most destinations and don't run overnight.
Airport coaches
Havaist at IST and Havabüs at SAW run direct coaches to central hubs such as Taksim and Kadıköy, with space for luggage in the hold. They're slower than a car and end at a central stop rather than at your hotel.
Taxi
Door to door without booking ahead. Use the official rank, insist on the meter and carry some cash, and expect the fare to rise with traffic and any bridge or tunnel tolls.
Private transfer
A pre-booked car with a fixed price per vehicle, a driver who tracks your flight and meets you in arrivals, and a direct drive to your hotel. It makes the most sense for families, groups, heavy luggage, late arrivals and hotels on narrow or pedestrian streets.

Quick tips for any arrival
- Buy an Istanbulkart at the airport metro station if you'll use public transport; it works on metros, trams, buses and ferries.
- The metro doesn't run overnight at either airport, so plan for a coach, taxi or pre-booked transfer if you land late.
- Weekday rush hours can add a lot to any road journey, especially across the Bosphorus.
- In a taxi, use the official rank, insist on the meter and have some cash, since not every driver accepts cards.
- Have your hotel's exact address written down, particularly in the old city, Beyoğlu and other areas with narrow streets.
