People stay in Sultanahmet for what is outside the door: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Hippodrome a few minutes away on foot. On departure day the same streets work against you: a pedestrian zone, a tram line through the middle and small hotels on narrow one-way lanes, with the airport on the far side of the Golden Horn.
The Pedestrian Zone and Your Pickup Hour
Since 1 January 2011 the areas around Sultanahmet and Beyazıt squares and the streets between Sirkeci and Tahtakale have been pedestrian, and Yerebatan Caddesi is closed to traffic. Vehicles may load and unload there between 20:00 and 10:00, which helps an early departure:
- Pickup 20:00–10:00: the car can usually get closer, though the narrowest lanes may still be foot-only.
- Pickup 10:00–20:00: meet the driver at the edge of the zone and allow a few minutes to walk there with your bags.
Choosing a Pickup Time for Your Flight
Most airlines ask you to be at Istanbul Airport about 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic one. With about 55 minutes of driving on a clear road, we plan pickups about 4½–5 hours before an international flight:
| International flight at | Pickup, roughly | At that hour |
|---|---|---|
| 07:00 | 02:00–02:30 | Inside loading hours; no tram or metro yet |
| 11:00 | 06:00–06:30 | Inside loading hours; morning rush starts about 07:00 |
| 15:00 | 10:00–10:30 | Zone closed to cars: meet at the edge |
| 21:00 | 16:00–16:30 | Evening rush from about 16:00: take the early end |
Rough suggestions from our own rule (airline advice, plus the drive, plus a margin); your airline's advice comes first. Ask on WhatsApp and we suggest a pickup time.
Before the Trams Start
The T1 tram and the M2 start around 06:00, so for a 06:00 or 07:00 flight rail is out. Havaist HVL-13 leaves Çatladıkapı at 03:00, 04:00 and 05:00, and HVL-1 leaves Aksaray Metro at 00:15, 01:45, 03:15 and 04:30, but both mean carrying bags to a stop in the dark. Taxis are harder to find early in the morning and on narrow streets, so ask your hotel to order one the evening before.
Car, Coach, Rail or Taxi From the Old City
Our Private Transfer
From €48 for the whole Mercedes Vito (6 passengers, 7 suitcases), one way. The exact price for your date and pickup time is shown before you pay, with no extra charge for traffic or flight delays; a Sprinter takes 15 passengers. Staying in Sirkeci, Laleli or Balat? See Fatih to Istanbul Airport.
Havaist HVL-13 From Çatladıkapı
The direct coach leaves from the İETT stop opposite the Çatladıkapı wedding hall, on the coast road below Sultanahmet, about 750 m from the Blue Mosque. It runs 21 times a day from 03:00 to 22:15; allow about two hours. The fare is ≈€8.50 (₺470) per person with an Istanbulkart or the Havaist app, ≈€10.50 (₺590) by bank card, no cash. If it has just gone, the T1 runs to Aksaray for HVL-1, about every 40 minutes until 23:00.
Tram and Metro
Take the T1 to Laleli-İstanbul Ü., walk about 350 m to Vezneciler, ride the M2 to Gayrettepe and change to the M11 for the airport, from about 06:00. On a visitor's Istanbulkart (≈€3 / ₺165 for the card) the tram and the M2 cost ≈€0.85 (₺46.20) each, and the M11 gate at Gayrettepe takes up to ≈€1.20 (₺66.39). With two changes, it suits light bags.
Taxi
A yellow taxi on the meter costs about €40–52 (₺2,250–2,900) in normal traffic, plus any tolls. The İBB tariff has no night rate (≈€1.30 / ₺71.94 to start, ≈€0.85 / ₺47.92 per km), but slow traffic is charged by time, so the evening rush costs more. Not every driver knows the one-way lanes.
When the Cheaper Option Is Enough
- Coach or rail: one or two people with a bag each and a daytime flight.
- Taxi: a small party with normal luggage on a street a taxi can find.
- Our car: a family or group, several suitcases, a flight before the trams start, or a hotel on a lane in Cankurtaran.
Pickup in Cankurtaran, Küçük Ayasofya and Around the Square
Be in the lobby with your luggage a few minutes before the pickup time; the driver contacts you on WhatsApp on arrival. Hotels in Cankurtaran, around Akbıyık Street, and in Küçük Ayasofya sit on narrow, mostly one-way lanes where a van cannot always wait, so we agree the spot beforehand: the door where access allows, otherwise the nearest open corner, marked with a WhatsApp pin and a short video. Binbirdirek, Gülhane and Sirkeci have wider streets. Note a pedestrian lane in the booking notes, ask your hotel which street its entrance is on, and among identical doorways have one of your group wait outside.
The Way Out: Kennedy Caddesi and the Golden Horn
The car leaves along the coast road, Kennedy Caddesi, then heads north either over the Golden Horn bridges and up the Kağıthane valley, or by Mahmutbey and the O-7. The slow places are the bridge approaches, Mahmutbey and Hasdal, worst on weekdays around 07:00–10:00 and 16:00–20:00, when 45–60 minutes can become 75–100. The driver stops on the upper departures level by your airline's entrance, where a security check comes before check-in.
Your Last Morning in the Old City
With an evening flight, ask reception to keep your bags and see one more sight: the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts on the square or the Archaeology Museums by Gülhane Park. Allow for the walk back, keep passports in your hand luggage and message us on WhatsApp when you head down.
Booking, Paying and Changes
Book on the Sultanahmet to Istanbul Airport route page with the hotel name and street. Child seats cost five euros per seat. The payment page shows the options for your booking and the exact amount of each before you confirm: card online (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) on iyzico's secure 3D Secure page, so we never see card details; cash to the driver in euros, US dollars, pounds sterling or Turkish lira; or a card guarantee online with the rest in cash (how to pay). Cancelling is free up to 24 hours before pickup; from 6 to 24 hours, up to 50% of the one-way price; under 6 hours, the full price may be charged. Date and time changes are possible until 24 hours before pickup. Book both ways together and the return part gets a discount (return transfers); the trip to the airport costs the same as the trip from it.
