Taksim is an easy place to stay and an awkward place to leave from. İstiklal Avenue is pedestrian, five streets of Talimhane have been closed to traffic since 2004, and the airport sits about 43 km to the north up one of the city's busiest road corridors. Here is your departure day, from the hotel door to the check-in desk.

Work Back From Your Flight Time

Most airlines ask you to be at Istanbul Airport about 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic one. Add the drive and a traffic margin, and from Taksim that means a pickup about 4¼–4½ hours before an international departure and 3¼–3½ hours before a domestic one. On weekday mornings and evenings, and on Friday afternoons, stay at the early end.

Rough suggestions from our own rule (airline advice, plus the drive, plus a margin); your airline's advice comes first. Ask us on WhatsApp and we suggest a pickup time.

Flights Before 09:00

The M11 metro runs from about 06:10 until just after midnight, so a flight before about 09:00 usually cannot be reached by rail. The Havaist HVL-9 leaves Taksim at 00:30, then not until 02:45, 03:45, 04:30 and 05:30. Taxis are harder to find in the small hours or on a side street, so ask your hotel to order one the evening before, or book a car for the exact time.

Four Ways Out of Taksim and What They Cost

Our Private Transfer

From €44 for the whole Mercedes Vito (6 passengers, 7 suitcases), one way, with the exact price for your date and pickup time shown before you pay and no extra charge for traffic or flight delays. The VIP Vito, a Mercedes V-Class, takes 4 passengers and 5 suitcases; a Sprinter takes 15 and 20. If your hand luggage makes it all too much for the vehicle you chose, the booking moves you to one that fits and shows the new price before you confirm.

Taxi on the Meter

A yellow taxi follows the İBB tariff: ≈€1.30 (₺71.94) to start and ≈€0.85 (₺47.92) per km, with no night rate and any tolls paid on top. Below 12.5 km/h it charges by time, ≈€11 (₺598.90) an hour, so the evening rush costs more. Expect about €39–49 (₺2,150–2,700) in normal traffic. Check the meter is running and carry lira in case the card terminal fails. Five or six people with suitcases need two taxis, about €77–97 (₺4,300–5,400) in total.

Havaist HVL-9 Coach

The coach leaves from the Havaist stop on the Gezi Park side, about 700 m (9 minutes on foot) north of the Republic Monument, 30 times a day between 00:30 and 23:30, and stops at the departures entrance (gates 1–4). Allow at least 90 minutes. The fare is ≈€8.50 (₺470) per person with an Istanbulkart or the Havaist app, ≈€10.50 (₺590) by bank card, no cash; two medium bags are free, each extra one ≈€2 (₺120).

Metro: M2, Then M11

The M2 runs three stops to Gayrettepe, where the M11 takes about 30 minutes to the station below the terminal: around an hour in all. On a visitor's Istanbulkart (≈€3 / ₺165 for the card) the M2 costs ≈€0.85 (₺46.20) and the M11 gate at Gayrettepe takes up to ≈€1.20 (₺66.39), with nothing back at the airport. The deep Gayrettepe change is hard going with big cases.

Which One Fits You

Where the Car Waits in Taksim

Be in the lobby with your luggage a few minutes early. The driver comes to the hotel entrance and contacts you on WhatsApp on arrival; where a car cannot reach the door, it waits at the nearest point it can:

Put this in the booking notes; for a hotel on a pedestrian lane the driver tells you on WhatsApp where to meet nearby. Mention bulky purchases such as a rug, so the right vehicle comes.

The Road North and Its Slow Spots

The usual way out runs via Tarlabaşı Bulvarı or Dolapdere, Okmeydanı and Kağıthane, then the Hasdal junction and the Kemerburgaz and Göktürk road. Before 06:30 the roads are almost empty; after 07:00 on a weekday the drive can take well over an hour, and the late-afternoon rush is just as slow, mostly on the Hasdal and Kağıthane stretch. The driver stops on the upper departures level by your airline's entrance, where bags are scanned before check-in, so keep passports in a pocket.

Booking, Paying and Changing Plans

Book on the Taksim to Istanbul Airport route page and give the hotel name, not only "Taksim". Child seats cost five euros per seat. The payment page shows your options and the exact amount of each before you confirm: card online (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) on iyzico's secure 3D Secure page, so we never see card details; cash to the driver in euros, dollars, pounds or lira; or a card guarantee online with the rest in cash (how to pay).

Cancelling is free up to 24 hours before pickup; from 6 to 24 hours, up to 50% of the one-way price; under 6 hours, the full price may be charged. Date and time changes are possible until 24 hours before pickup (cancel or change). Not landed yet? Book both ways together and the return part gets a discount (return transfers); the trip to the airport costs the same as the trip from it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take from Taksim to Istanbul Airport?

About 45 minutes by car on an empty road, 45–60 minutes outside rush hour and 60–75 minutes or more on weekday mornings and evenings. The metro via Gayrettepe takes around an hour and the Havaist coach about 90 minutes.

What time should I leave Taksim for my flight?

Book a pickup about 4¼–4½ hours before an international flight and 3¼–3½ hours before a domestic one, at the early end on weekday mornings and evenings. For a 14:00 international flight that means roughly 09:30–09:45. If you are unsure, ask us on WhatsApp and we suggest a pickup time.

How much is a private transfer from Taksim to Istanbul Airport?

From €44 per vehicle, one way, for a Mercedes Vito with up to 6 passengers and 7 suitcases. The exact price for your date and pickup time is shown before you pay, and there is no extra charge for traffic or flight delays.

How much is a taxi from Taksim to Istanbul Airport?

About €39–49 (₺2,150–2,700) on the meter of a yellow taxi in normal traffic, plus any tolls. There is no night rate, but slow traffic is charged by time, so the evening rush costs more.

Can the driver pick me up on İstiklal Avenue or in Talimhane?

İstiklal is pedestrian and five Talimhane streets are closed to traffic, so the car waits at the nearest open corner or street, usually a couple of minutes' walk away. Mention it in the booking notes and the driver tells you on WhatsApp where to meet.

Is there a bus from Taksim to Istanbul Airport at night?

The Havaist HVL-9 runs 30 times a day from Taksim between 00:30 and 23:30, but after the 00:30 coach there is nothing until 02:45. The metro does not run overnight.

Can I take the metro from Taksim to Istanbul Airport with luggage?

Yes: the M2 to Gayrettepe, then the M11 to the airport. It runs from about 06:10 until just after midnight, and the deep change at Gayrettepe means long escalators and corridors, which is tiring with large suitcases.

Can I book the trip back when I book my arrival?

Yes. Add the return to the same booking and the return part gets a discount. You can later cancel the return on its own under the usual cancellation rules.
