Istanbul Airport Arrival Guide: Passport Control, SIM Cards, Money and Transport

Updated 3 October 2026

Short answer: at Istanbul Airport (IST) you follow the blue signs to passport control, collect your bags and walk through customs into the arrivals hall. The SIM shops there are open 24/7, and Turkcell's official tourist pack costs ≈€32 (₺1,800) for 20 GB over 28 days. Wi-Fi is free, ATMs beat the exchange desks, and left luggage costs ≈€4–15 (₺210–860) per item for 24 hours. Havaist coaches leave from floor -2; the M11 metro and taxis are reached through exits 9 and 13.

Istanbul Airport is a very large terminal, and the first half-hour after landing sets the tone for your trip. This guide follows the arrival in order, then covers what most visitors sort out on the spot: a SIM or eSIM, cash, Wi-Fi, left luggage and the way into the city.

Step by step: from the aircraft to the arrivals hall

  1. Passport control: follow the blue signs and have your passport ready. The e-passport gates are for Turkish citizens, so foreign visitors queue at the staffed desks. Screens on the way and the Istanbul Airport app show the expected wait.
  2. Visa on arrival: if your nationality can get one at the airport, the two visa offices are near piers A, B and F. Everyone else needs an e-visa or a consulate visa before travelling. Your passport must be valid for at least 60 days beyond the end of your permitted stay.
  3. Baggage claim: your belt number is on the screens and in the app. Trolleys take a deposit: pay at the trolley station, keep the QR receipt and scan it when you return the trolley. Report a missing or damaged bag at the airline's lost-and-found desk in the baggage hall before you leave.
  4. Customs: with nothing to declare beyond the duty-free allowances, take the green line.
  5. Arrivals hall: the exits are numbered, which makes everything below easy to find; there's a pharmacy next to exit 13.

SIM card or eSIM

Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom all sell tourist lines in the arrivals hall, around the clock. You need only your passport (Vodafone also asks for a local address, so have your hotel's details ready). Compare before you buy:

Whichever you choose, ask for the total, SIM and taxes included, before you hand over your passport.

eSIM: Turkcell lets you apply online up to 90 days ahead and pay by card. With an NFC-equipped eSIM phone and a biometric passport, you activate it yourself in the Turkcell app after passport control; otherwise, collect it at any Turkcell store. Vodafone issues eSIMs in its shops, including at the airport. Keeping your home SIM? Check your operator's rates first: the EU's "roam like at home" does not cover Türkiye.

Your phone and the 120-day IMEI rule

Türkiye registers phones by their IMEI number, but on holiday this rarely matters:

Money: exchange desks, ATMs and cards

The exchange desks you pass on arrival belong to Global Exchange, and their rates are poor: in January 2026 a Turkish newspaper reported the airport board buying euros and dollars at around 30% below the central bank rate. If you need cash at once, change only a small amount.

A bank ATM is usually the better deal. Check the fee shown on the screen before you confirm, and if an ATM or card terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, choose lira; the on-the-spot conversion usually costs more. Cards are widely accepted, and four out of five in-store card payments in Türkiye are now contactless, but carry some lira for taxis, as not every driver takes cards.

Free Wi-Fi

The airport network, iGA WiFi, is free and, according to the airport, unlimited. Turkish law requires identity checks, so you log in either with your mobile number and a password sent by SMS (a roaming home SIM will do) or by scanning your passport at a Wi-Fi kiosk in the terminal to get an access code.

Luggage storage

The left-luggage offices on the arrivals floor, near exits 13–14 and by the domestic exit, charge per item for 24 hours: ≈€4 (₺210) for a small bag, ≈€5 (₺270) for a cabin bag, ≈€10 (₺550) for a large hold bag, ≈€12.50 (₺690) for XL items such as a bicycle and ≈€15.50 (₺860) for XXL. Lockers (small to XL, same prices) are on the departures floor near entrance gates 1 and 6.

Istanbulkart: what visitors pay

The card costs ≈€3 (₺165) with no credit on it, so load enough for your first rides. Visitors get the anonymous card, and transfer discounts and distance refunds apply only to cards personalised with a Turkish ID or residence-permit number. So every ride costs the full fare (≈€0.85 / ₺46.20 on the M2, trams and buses), there's no discount when you change, and the M11 gate at the airport charges ≈€0.85 (₺47.89) with no refund when you tap out. One card can pay for several people: each of you taps the same card. A contactless bank card costs more: ≈€1.15 (₺65) a ride on the metro, trams and buses, ≈€3.50 (₺185) on the M11 (if the gate accepts it) and ≈€10.50 (₺590) on the Havaist coach to Taksim.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a SIM card at Istanbul Airport?

Yes. Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom have shops in the arrivals hall, open 24/7, and you only need your passport. Turkcell's Tourist Welcome Pack costs ≈€32 (₺1,800) for 20 GB, 200 minutes and unlimited WhatsApp messaging over 28 days. Vodafone publishes no SIM price, and Türk Telekom's package prices leave out the one-off new-line charges of ≈€12.50 (₺700) plus ≈€6 (₺323.81), so ask for the total before you pay.

Can I get a Turkish eSIM?

Yes. Turkcell lets you apply online up to 90 days ahead and pay by card. With an NFC-equipped eSIM phone and a biometric passport, you activate it yourself in the Turkcell app after passport control; otherwise you collect it at any Turkcell store. Vodafone issues eSIMs in its shops, including the ones at the airport.

Do I need to register my phone's IMEI in Turkey?

Not for a normal holiday. A phone brought from abroad can be used for 120 days without registration, whether on your home SIM, roaming or a foreign eSIM. If you buy a Turkish SIM, the operator pairs your phone with the new number when you sign up. Registration is only needed to keep using a phone from abroad on a Turkish line beyond 120 days, and the fee in 2026 is ≈€975 (₺54,258).

Should I exchange money at Istanbul Airport?

Only a small amount, if any. The airport exchange desks give poor rates: in January 2026 their buying rates were reported at around 30% below the central bank rate. A bank ATM in the baggage hall or the arrivals hall is usually better value; check the fee on the screen and always choose to be charged in lira.

Is there free Wi-Fi at Istanbul Airport?

Yes. The iGA WiFi network is free and, according to the airport, unlimited. Log in with your mobile number and a password sent by SMS, or scan your passport at a Wi-Fi kiosk in the terminal to get an access code.

Is there luggage storage at Istanbul Airport?

Yes. The left-luggage offices on the arrivals floor, near exits 13–14 and by the domestic exit, charge per item for 24 hours: from ≈€4 (₺210) for a small bag to ≈€10 (₺550) for a large hold bag and ≈€15.50 (₺860) for XXL items. There are also lockers on the departures floor near entrance gates 1 and 6.

Rather go straight to your hotel?

Your driver tracks your flight and meets you just outside the arrivals exit; once you land, they contact you on WhatsApp with the exact meeting point and a short video showing the way. Priced per vehicle for up to 6 passengers: from €44 to Taksim, from €48 to Sultanahmet. The exact price for your date and pickup time is shown before you pay.
