Istanbul Airport Taxi Prices (2026): Fares, Tariff and Tips

A taxi is the simplest way into Istanbul if you haven't booked anything: you walk out of arrivals, join the queue at the rank and go. But Istanbul Airport (IST) is a long way from the centre, about 43 km from Taksim by road, so the fare is substantial and depends on traffic, the route and the kind of taxi you take. Below you'll find the official 2026 tariff, realistic fares to the main districts, where the ranks are, how Uber and BiTaksi work at the airport, and how to avoid the most common problems.

Istanbul taxi tariff (from 20 July 2026)

Official tariff of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), in force since 20 July 2026. The same rates apply day and night. Tolls are not included in the meter fare and are paid on top.

These are the fares a yellow taxi's meter should show for the usual route in normal traffic. The same ranges apply in the other direction, from the city centre to the airport.

Taxi estimates are the start fee plus the per-km rate over the usual route in normal traffic. In slow traffic a time charge is added (₺598.90 per hour, about ₺10 a minute, whenever the taxi moves slower than 12.5 km/h), and tolls are extra. Private-transfer prices are fixed per vehicle (Mercedes Vito, up to 6 passengers), with no extra for traffic or flight delays.

How the taxi meter works

In a yellow taxi the meter starts at ₺71.94 and adds ₺47.92 for every kilometre. When the car is crawling along at less than 12.5 km/h, in a jam or at a long set of lights, it charges by time instead: ₺598.90 an hour, or about ₺10 a minute. That is why the same trip can cost noticeably more on a weekday evening than late at night. Turquoise, black and 8-seat taxis have higher start and per-km rates, shown in the table above.

The minimum fare, ₺230 in a yellow taxi, only matters for very short hops; any trip from the airport into the city is far above it. There is no night rate: since 20 July 2026 the price per kilometre is the same at 3 am as at 3 pm. The tariff also contains no airport surcharge, so a trip from IST is metered exactly like any other trip in the city.

Tolls

Tolls are not part of the tariff: the passenger pays them on top of the meter fare, and whether there is one depends on the route. Every trip from IST to the Asian side, for example to Kadıköy or Sabiha Gökçen Airport, has to cross the Bosphorus, either on one of the bridges or through the Eurasia Tunnel, so expect a toll on those. If you want to know in advance, ask the driver before you set off which route they will take and whether it has a toll.

Where to find taxis at Istanbul Airport

The official taxi ranks are on the arrivals floor, outside exits 9 and 13. They are run by the airport's taxi cooperative and operate 24/7, so you'll find a taxi even if you land in the middle of the night. Yellow, turquoise and black taxis all wait there, and the colour tells you which tariff applies, so check it before you get in if the price matters to you. Join the queue and take the taxi at the front rather than going with anyone who approaches you inside the terminal.

Taxi apps: Uber and BiTaksi

Uber works at Istanbul Airport, but it books a licensed taxi rather than a private car. Request the ride in the app, go to the taxi line at exit 9 or 13 and show the 6-digit PIN from the app to the first taxi in the queue.

BiTaksi, a Turkish app, also hails licensed taxis and shows a fare estimate before you confirm, which is handy for checking roughly what the meter ought to show at the end.

How to avoid problems

• Use the official rank only. Politely turn down anyone offering a ride or a "fixed price" inside the terminal, and go to the queue outside exit 9 or 13.
• Check the meter. It should be running from the start and show ₺71.94 in a yellow taxi. If it isn't switched on, ask the driver to start it before you leave the rank.
• Carry cash. Not every driver accepts cards, so have enough Turkish lira for the fare, or ask about card payment before you get in.
• Note the plate number. Take a photo of the number plate or write it down; it's the quickest way to trace lost property or report a problem.
• Have your address ready. Keep your hotel's full address on your phone, ideally with a map pin, so the driver can go straight there.

Taxi or private transfer?

For one or two people with light luggage, a yellow taxi from the rank needs no planning and, in normal traffic, costs about the same as a private transfer. A few situations tip the balance:

• Groups: five or six people with suitcases usually need two taxis, so to Taksim you pay two meter fares, roughly ₺4,300–5,400 in total. One Mercedes Vito for up to 6 passengers costs €44 (about ₺2,450).
• Price certainty: the meter keeps running in traffic and tolls come on top, whereas a transfer price is fixed per vehicle when you book, with no extra for traffic or flight delays.
• Waiting: your driver tracks your flight and meets you in arrivals with a name board, so a delay or a slow passport queue costs you nothing extra.
• Late arrivals: taxis run 24/7 at IST, so you won't be stranded, but after a late landing it helps to have a driver already waiting instead of queuing at the rank and checking the meter.
