Nişantaşı is Istanbul's best-known shopping district: tree-lined streets of boutiques, cafés and apartment blocks, a few minutes' walk from the business towers of Şişli. Both airports are a long way off, and the nearest metro station is Osmanbey on the M2. This guide compares the four ways to get there from Istanbul Airport, explains the Sabiha Gökçen routes, and shows you where you will actually end up.

What Nişantaşı Is and Where You Will Arrive
Nişantaşı is a quarter of Şişli, on the European side, made up of four neighbourhoods: Teşvikiye, Maçka, Osmanbey and Pangaltı. Teşvikiye is the centre. If you search for the name on its own, the results are mixed up with a university of the same name, so look for the shopping streets and the neighbourhoods rather than the bare word.
- Abdi İpekçi Caddesi runs through Maçka and Teşvikiye and is one of the city's best-known luxury shopping streets. Other streets in the quarter include Teşvikiye Caddesi, Valikonağı Caddesi and Mim Kemal Öke Caddesi.
- Rumeli Caddesi starts at Osmanbey metro station, so it is the natural way in on foot from the M2.
- Teşvikiye Mosque is a neo-baroque mosque built in the mid-19th century and designed by Krikor Balyan. It is the quarter's best-known landmark, about a kilometre from Osmanbey station (roughly a quarter of an hour on foot).
- Halaskargazi Caddesi runs along the western edge, with buses and dolmuş minibuses towards Taksim and Mecidiyeköy.
- Maçka Demokrasi Parkı is a public park in Harbiye, next to the Taşkışla building, and a cable car links the two. Check its hours on the day.
Osmanbey is the nearest station to the central part of the quarter, but Teşvikiye and Maçka are a walk from it, so with bags a short taxi from the station may be easier. Whichever option you choose, give the driver your street name, not just "Nişantaşı".
Option 1: Metro (M11 and M2)
This is the cheapest way and, outside rush hour, among the fastest. The ride is the same one we describe in our M11 metro guide.
- Buy an Istanbulkart at the machines in the M11 station beneath the terminal. The card costs ≈€3 (₺165) and you load the fares onto it.
- Take the M11 towards Gayrettepe. It is the last stop and about 30 minutes away, with trains every 15 minutes from about 06:10 to 00:21. The gate takes ≈€0.85 (₺47.89) at the airport on a visitor's card, wherever you get off.
- At Gayrettepe, change to the M2 towards Yenikapı. Allow a few minutes for the escalators and corridors, as the M11 platform is very deep.
- Ride two stops, Şişli-Mecidiyeköy and then Osmanbey. The M2 costs ≈€0.85 (₺46.20) on top, which is why the total is about €1.70 (₺94), not counting the card.
There is no overnight M11, and the last train reaches Gayrettepe after the M2 has closed for the night. If you land late in the evening, check the time before you head down to the platform. With a large suitcase or a pushchair, the long escalators at Gayrettepe and the crowded M2 at rush hour are hard going.
Option 2: Havaist Coach
Havaist runs no line to Şişli, Mecidiyeköy or Nişantaşı. The nearest is the HVL-9 Taksim line, which leaves from platform 16 on the transport level (floor -2). The fare is ≈€8.50 (₺470) per person with an Istanbulkart or the Havaist app, or ≈€10.50 (₺590) if you tap a contactless bank card, and cash is not accepted. The journey takes about 90 minutes. Some trips also stop at 4. Levent, Zincirlikuyu and Beşiktaş before Taksim, so check the trip on hava.ist.
From Taksim, the M2 takes you one stop to Osmanbey, so the coach followed by the metro costs more and takes longer than the M11 route. It makes sense if your hotel is near Taksim itself, or if you want a seat and no change until Taksim. Our Havaist guide has the full line list, luggage allowance and timetable notes.
Option 3: Taxi
Taxis wait at the ranks outside arrivals exits 9 and 13, around the clock. The meter fare to Beşiktaş and Şişli is about €33–47 (₺1,850–2,600), with tolls paid on top. There is no night rate, and no airport or luggage fee. The road is long, about 48–54 km, and the time charge starts whenever the taxi moves slower than 12.5 km/h, so the weekday evening rush costs more than the same trip at midday. Make sure the meter is on and write down your street address. Our Istanbul Airport taxi prices guide covers the tariff, the apps and how to avoid problems.
Option 4: Private Transfer
Our driver tracks your flight, so there is no extra charge for traffic or flight delays. The driver waits just outside the arrivals exit, and after you have landed sends the exact meeting point and a short video on WhatsApp. Our drivers speak English. The price is from €44 per vehicle, not per person, and you see the exact figure before you pay.
A Mercedes Vito takes up to 6 passengers with luggage, we have a V-Class VIP for smaller groups who want more comfort, and a Sprinter for larger parties. Child seats are available on request. In Nişantaşı that means the driver can take you to your hotel door, which saves the walk from Osmanbey with bags. See the price for Istanbul Airport to Şişli, which covers Nişantaşı, Harbiye and Mecidiyeköy, or compare all routes on our transfer prices page.
From Sabiha Gökçen Airport
Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side, about 40 km from Şişli, and every route crosses the Bosphorus. The road journey is much the same length as from Istanbul Airport, about 40 to 65 minutes outside rush hour.
- Private transfer: from €57 per vehicle. See Sabiha Gökçen Airport to Şişli.
- Taxi: about €36–43 (₺2,000–2,400) on the meter, plus a bridge toll.
- Havabüs SG-2 to Taksim: ≈€8.50 (₺485) with an Istanbulkart or ≈€10.50 (₺590) with a bank card, about 90 minutes and up to 2 hours at rush hour. The coach ends near Taksim Square, and from there the M2 takes you one stop to Osmanbey.
- Rail: M4 to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, Marmaray to Yenikapı, then the M2 towards Hacıosman. Osmanbey is the fifth stop after Yenikapı (Vezneciler, Haliç, Şişhane, Taksim, Osmanbey). Each ride is charged at its own fare, and the Marmaray gate takes up to ≈€1.50 (₺82.17) on a visitor's card. The all-rail trip to Taksim takes 80 to 90 minutes, and Osmanbey is one stop further.
Our guide to Sabiha Gökçen to Taksim has the timetables and the last-train times, which matter for late arrivals.
Getting Around Once You Are There
- From Taksim: the M2 is one stop to Osmanbey. Walking is possible but long with bags, so most people ride.
- From Sultanahmet and the old city: the usual rail route is the T1 tram to Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı, then a short walk to Vezneciler-İstanbul Ü. on the M2. Osmanbey is four stops on from Vezneciler. After a day on foot, a taxi may be easier.
- From Beşiktaş and the Bosphorus: there is no metro on the shore, and the streets climb steeply, so the usual way is a short taxi ride up the hill.
- Shopping malls: for the big malls, see our Istanbul shopping malls guide.
Opening hours differ from shop to shop, so check the times of any place you plan to visit.
Which Option Suits You?
- Light bags, daytime, one or two people: the M11 and M2.
- Heavy luggage, children or a group: a private transfer, since the price is per vehicle and not per person.
- Landing late in the evening or after midnight: a taxi or a private transfer, as the metro has stopped. Havaist HVL-9 also runs late, but you would still need a taxi from Taksim once the M2 has closed.
- Meeting or a flight to catch: a private transfer with a driver who tracks your flight and chooses the route on the day.
- Going back to the airport: leave generous time. Evening traffic out of Şişli can add a lot to the drive. You can book your Istanbul Airport transfer for the return at the same time.
