The coach ends at the square, not at your hotel. If you're staying further down the hill in Galata or Karaköy, you'll still have a walk or a short taxi ride with your luggage.
Option 3: metro, Marmaray and M2
- Buy an Istanbulkart at the airport metro station and take the M4 to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, about 40 minutes.
- Change to the Marmaray and ride under the Bosphorus to Yenikapı, three stops.
- At Yenikapı change to the M2 towards Hacıosman. Taksim is four stops away; for Galata and Tünel, get off one stop earlier at Şişhane.
This all-rail route takes about 80–90 minutes and doesn't depend on road traffic, which makes it the most predictable public option at rush hour. The changes involve long escalators, so it works best with a small case.
Option 4: metro, ferry and funicular
Take the M4 to its last stop at Kadıköy, walk a few minutes to the ferry pier and cross to Kabataş. From Kabataş, the F1 funicular climbs to Taksim in a couple of minutes. The whole trip takes about 85 minutes and the ferry crossing is one of the most beautiful ways to arrive in Istanbul. Ferries are less frequent in the evening, so check the timetable at the pier. If you're staying in Karaköy, take the ferry from Kadıköy to Karaköy instead.
Option 5: taxi
Taxis wait at the official rank in front of arrivals. Insist on the meter and turn down fixed fares offered inside the terminal. On this route the bridge or tunnel toll is added to the fare, and the total depends heavily on traffic at the crossing. Keep some cash handy, as not every driver accepts cards.

- Around Taksim Square: the Havabüs stop and the M2 station are right there.
- İstiklal Avenue: pedestrianised, so the last stretch is on foot whichever way you arrive.
