Istanbul Taxi Scams: Common Tricks and How to Avoid Them

Updated 3 November 2026

Short answer: Most Istanbul taxi rides go without trouble. The problems follow familiar patterns: a stranger offering a ride in the terminal, a flat price instead of the meter, a "broken" meter, a "night rate" that does not exist, or a card machine that "isn't working". Use the official rank or an app, check that the meter is running (a yellow taxi starts at ≈€1.30 / ₺71.94 plus ≈€0.85 / ₺47.92 per km, with no night rate) and note the plate number. Istanbul Airport to Taksim should come to about €39–49 (₺2,150–2,700), plus any tolls.

Istanbul's licensed taxis run on an official city tariff, and most drivers simply switch on the meter. Here are the tricks our taxi guides describe, how to avoid each, and when booking ahead is easier.

What the Meter Should Show: the Official Tariff

Every licensed taxi uses the İBB (Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality) tariff in force since 20 July 2026; the colour of the taxi tells you which rate applies.

TaxiStartPer kmMinimum fare
Yellow≈€1.30 (₺71.94)≈€0.85 (₺47.92)≈€4 (₺230)
Turquoise≈€1.50 (₺82.73)≈€1 (₺55.10)≈€5 (₺265)
Black (luxury)≈€2 (₺122.30)≈€1.45 (₺81.46)≈€7 (₺400)
8-seat≈€1.70 (₺93.52)≈€1.10 (₺62.29)≈€5.50 (₺300)

Below 12.5 km/h the meter charges by time instead, ≈€11 (₺598.90) an hour in a yellow taxi, which is why the evening rush costs more than the same trip late at night. There is no night rate and no airport or luggage fee. The only legitimate extra is a toll, paid on top of the meter.

What a Fair Fare From the Airports Looks Like

Yellow-taxi meter estimates for the usual route in normal traffic; the same ranges apply in the other direction.

TripYellow taxi on the meterTolls on top
Istanbul Airport → Taksim≈€39–49 (₺2,150–2,700)Usually none
Istanbul Airport → Sultanahmet≈€40–52 (₺2,250–2,900)Usually none
Istanbul Airport → Kadıköy≈€46–58 (₺2,550–3,200)Bosphorus crossing
Sabiha Gökçen → Kadıköy≈€32–41 (₺1,800–2,300)None, or the TEM motorway
Sabiha Gökçen → Taksim≈€39–50 (₺2,150–2,800)Bosphorus bridge
Galataport → Taksim≈€4–6 (₺230–350)None

For other trips, without traffic or tolls a yellow taxi comes to about €10 (₺550) for 10 km and ≈€36 (₺1,990) for 40 km. A Bosphorus bridge costs ≈€1.05 (₺59) and the Eurasia Tunnel ≈€6 (₺330; ₺165 from midnight to 05:00). Full tables: Istanbul Airport, Sabiha Gökçen and Galataport taxi prices.

Common Tricks and How to Avoid Each One

A Ride Offered in the Terminal

Anyone offering you a car in arrivals is not part of the official queue. Politely say no and go to the rank: at Istanbul Airport outside exits 9 and 13 on the arrivals floor, open 24/7; at Sabiha Gökçen follow the "Taksi" signs to the rank outside the arrivals exit. Take the taxi at the front.

A Flat Price Instead of the Meter

If a driver quotes a round euro or lira amount before you set off, say no and take the next taxi. Agree the destination, not the price. A flat price is a clear warning sign on short hops, where the meter would show little more than the ≈€4 (₺230) minimum.

A Meter That Is Off or "Broken"

The meter should run from the start, showing ≈€1.30 (₺71.94) in a yellow taxi. If it is off, ask the driver to start it before you leave the rank. If you are told it is broken, don't negotiate: take another taxi.

A "Night Rate" or an Airport Fee

Neither exists; the tariff is the same 24 hours a day. If a driver asks for one, insist on the meter or take the next taxi. Only the Eurasia Tunnel toll changes at night, and it goes down.

A Card Machine That "Isn't Working"

A 2026 rule requires a card terminal linked to the meter in every Istanbul taxi, but the deadline has been extended to 16 November 2026, with 15 more days to start taking cards. Until card payment is the norm, carry enough Turkish lira for the fare and tolls, or ask before you get in. Count your notes as you pay.

Surprise Tolls and Routes

Before you leave, ask which route the driver will take and whether it has a toll; you may state a preferred route. On trips from Istanbul Airport, the airport says a driver who uses the Eurasia Tunnel also charges the bridge toll for the way back. Otherwise pay the meter plus tolls, nothing more.

Ending Up in the Wrong Place

Keep your hotel's full address on your phone with a map pin, and photograph the plate number when you get in.

Someone Who Says They Are Your Driver

If you have booked with us, your driver messages you on WhatsApp after you land with the exact meeting point and a short video, and waits just outside the arrivals exit. Don't follow anyone who hasn't sent that message; check with us first.

Uber, BiTaksi and iTaksi

In Istanbul the apps call a licensed taxi, not a private car, so the meter, the time charge and tolls still apply.

So is Uber safe in Istanbul? It puts you in the same licensed, metered taxi as the rank. Some eSIMs don't work in Turkey, so check your connection first.

When a Pre-Booked Transfer Is Simpler

For one or two people with light bags, a taxi from the rank is fine and to Taksim often costs a little less than our car. Booking ahead is simpler when:

Our prices are per vehicle and shown before you pay, with no extra charge for traffic or flight delays, and our drivers speak English. See Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen transfer prices, our Taksim transfer guide, or the comparisons for Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen.

Frequently asked questions

Are taxis in Istanbul safe for tourists?

Most rides go without any trouble. Take a taxi from the official rank or through an app, check that the meter is running from the start, keep your hotel address on your phone and note the plate number. Turn down anyone who offers you a ride in the terminal.

Is Uber safe in Istanbul?

Uber in Istanbul books a licensed taxi, not a private car, so you ride in the same metered taxi as at the rank. At Istanbul Airport you go to the taxi line at exit 9 or 13 and show the 6-digit PIN from the app to the first taxi in the queue.

Is BiTaksi better than a taxi from the rank?

BiTaksi also books licensed taxis, including 8-seat and luxury ones. Its advantages are a fare estimate before you confirm, which helps you check the meter, and payment by card in the app.

Do Istanbul taxis charge more at night?

No. The İBB tariff in force since 20 July 2026 has no night rate and no airport or luggage fee. A driver who asks for a night rate is not following the tariff, so insist on the meter or take the next taxi.

How much should a taxi from Istanbul Airport to Taksim cost?

About €39–49 (₺2,150–2,700) on the meter of a yellow taxi in normal traffic, plus any tolls. Heavy traffic pushes the fare towards the top of the range because of the time charge.

What should I do if the driver says the meter is broken?

Don't negotiate. Get out and take the next taxi from the rank. The meter should be running from the start and show ≈€1.30 (₺71.94) in a yellow taxi.

Can I pay an Istanbul taxi by card?

Not always yet. Card terminals linked to the meter become mandatory under a rule whose deadline was extended to 16 November 2026, with 15 more days to start taking cards. Until then, carry enough Turkish lira for the fare and tolls, or ask before you get in.

Where can I complain about an Istanbul taxi?

Call İBB's Beyaz Masa on 153, which is open 24/7, and give the plate number, the time and the route. That is why it is worth photographing the plate number when you get in.

Rather Have a Car Waiting?

Your driver tracks your flight, waits just outside the arrivals exit and takes you to your hotel. Priced per vehicle for up to 6 passengers, from €44 from Istanbul Airport to Taksim; the exact price for your date and pickup time is shown before you pay.
