How to Get to Istanbul Airport from Taksim, Sultanahmet and the City
Istanbul Airport (IST) sits north of the city near the Black Sea coast, about 40 km from Taksim and the old city. Getting there for a flight is a different problem from arriving: you're working to a deadline, traffic on the way is hard to predict, and the airport itself is huge. This guide covers the options from the areas most visitors stay in, and how early to leave.

How early should you leave?
Work backwards from your flight. Many airlines recommend arriving around 3 hours before an international flight and about 2 hours before a domestic one. - From Taksim, Beyoğlu, Beşiktaş or Şişli: leave about 4–4½ hours before an international departure at busy times, a little less late at night.
- From Sultanahmet and the old city: about 4–4½ hours; if your hotel is on a pedestrian lane, allow a few extra minutes to reach the car.
- From Kadıköy and the Asian side: the route crosses the Bosphorus, so add extra time and plan to leave about 4½–5 hours before departure.

Option 1: private transfer

Option 2: Havaist airport coach
Havaist coaches run from Taksim and other central points to Istanbul Airport, with your luggage in the hold. They're good value, but you still have to get yourself and your bags to the stop, and journey times depend on traffic like any other road option. Check the current stops and timetable on the Havaist website or app before you travel, particularly for early-morning flights.
Option 3: metro
- From Taksim, take the M2 towards Hacıosman to Gayrettepe.
- Change to the M11 and ride to Istanbul Airport; the station is directly below the terminal.
- From the old city, you'll first need the tram and at least one more connection to reach the M2, which adds time and changes.
The metro avoids road traffic, but the changes involve escalators and walking with your bags, and it doesn't run overnight, so it isn't an option for the earliest flights.
Option 4: taxi
Taxis are easy to find in central areas during the day, less so early in the morning or on narrow side streets. Insist on the meter and keep some cash handy, as not every driver accepts cards. For an early flight, ask your hotel to order one the evening before, or pre-book a transfer.
