The Geography of the Bosphorus

At its narrowest point, the Bosphorus is just 700 metres wide — narrow enough that you can clearly see the opposite continent from the shore. The strait connects the Black Sea to the north with the Sea of Marmara to the south, and it is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, with hundreds of cargo vessels, tankers, and passenger ferries passing through every day. Istanbul is the only city in the world that straddles two continents, and the Bosphorus is the line between them.

A Bosphorus Cruise

The best way to experience the Bosphorus is from the water. Several types of cruise are available depending on your time and budget:

• Short cruises departing from Eminönü cover the lower Bosphorus and last approximately 90 minutes — ideal if you are short on time
• Full-day public ferry cruises operated by Istanbul Şehir Hatları run from Eminönü to Anadolu Kavağı near the Black Sea entrance and back, taking around 6 hours in total
• Private sunset cruises offer a more intimate experience with catered food and drinks, departing from various points along the European shore
• Bosphorus dinner cruises with live music and traditional Turkish entertainment are popular for special occasions

Landmarks Along the Bosphorus

A cruise along the Bosphorus reveals some of Istanbul's most iconic landmarks. On the European shore, you will pass Dolmabahçe Palace, the grand 19th-century home of the last Ottoman sultans, and the Ottoman fortress of Rumeli Hisarı, built by Mehmed II in 1452 in preparation for the conquest of Constantinople. On the Asian shore, Beylerbeyi Palace and Anadolu Hisarı fortress are among the most striking sights. The famous Maiden's Tower — Kız Kulesi — sits on a tiny island just off the Asian shore near Üsküdar, and has featured in countless films and legends.

The Bosphorus Bridges

Three suspension bridges now span the strait, each an engineering achievement in its own right. The 15 July Martyrs Bridge — formerly known simply as the Bosphorus Bridge — was opened in 1973 and was the first fixed link between Europe and Asia. The Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, opened in 1988, carries the city's ring road. The Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge to the north, completed in 2016, is currently the widest suspension bridge in the world. All three are best seen illuminated at night from a boat or from the hills above the strait.

Best Viewpoints on Shore

If a cruise is not possible, several hilltop locations offer spectacular views over the Bosphorus. Çamlıca Hill on the Asian side is the highest point in Istanbul and offers a panoramic view of the entire strait and both bridges on a clear day. On the European side, the clifftop park at Rumeli Hisarı provides dramatic views of the fortress and the narrowest point of the strait. The waterfront neighbourhoods of Bebek, Arnavutköy, and Ortaköy are also excellent for an evening walk along the shore.

Getting to the Bosphorus from Istanbul Airport

Istanbul Airport (IST) is located on the European side of the city, approximately 40 to 55 minutes from the Bosphorus waterfront by private transfer depending on your destination along the strait.
