Istanbul Airport to Eminönü & Sirkeci
Short answer: the easiest way is a private transfer or a taxi, about 45–75 minutes depending on traffic on the waterfront road. On public transport, the Havaist HVL-13 coach stops right at the Eminönü ferry pier (about 110 minutes, ≈€8.50 / ₺470 per person), and the rail route is the M11 to Halkalı and then the Marmaray to Sirkeci (roughly 1 hour 30 minutes). From Sabiha Gökçen, take the M4 and change to the Marmaray at Ayrılık Çeşmesi; Sirkeci is two stops later. Our private transfer to Eminönü and Sirkeci starts from €48 per vehicle from Istanbul Airport and from €59 from Sabiha Gökçen, with the price shown before you pay.

Eminönü and Sirkeci sit side by side at the mouth of the Golden Horn, at the foot of the old city. Ferries, two tram lines, the Marmaray, the Galata Bridge and the Spice Bazaar all meet here, which makes it one of the best-connected places to stay in Istanbul and one of the busiest. Istanbul Airport (IST) is roughly 45–50 km away by road, so the choice comes down to how much luggage you have, what time you land and how many of you are travelling.

*Traffic along the Golden Horn and the waterfront road varies a lot through the day; weekday evenings are the slowest. Public transport figures are for a visitor Istanbulkart, which costs ≈€3 (₺165) for the card itself. The taxi range is the estimate for Sultanahmet, which is a similar distance, and excludes tolls. The transfer price is per vehicle (Mercedes Vito, up to 6 passengers).
Eminönü and Sirkeci: Which Is Which?
Eminönü is the waterfront by the Galata Bridge. The ferry piers, the Spice Bazaar and the T5 tram terminus are here, and the T1 tram has a stop of the same name. Sirkeci is a few minutes' walk to the east, uphill from the water, with the Marmaray station and its own T1 stop. From Sirkeci to the Eminönü pier is about 530 m on foot. Both belong to the Fatih district, so our Istanbul Airport to Fatih transfer covers hotels in either one.
The two areas are a good base for rail and ferries, less so for quiet nights: the streets around the piers are crowded by day and the traffic on the waterfront road is heavy. Hagia Sophia is about 700–760 m from Sirkeci, a 10-minute walk uphill, so you can also walk to the main monuments. See our Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet guide if your hotel is higher up the hill.
Option 1: Private Transfer to Your Hotel
Your driver tracks your flight and waits just outside the arrivals exit. After you land, your driver sends the exact meeting point and a short video on WhatsApp, then drives you straight to your hotel. Our drivers speak English. The price is per vehicle, not per person, and is shown before you pay: from €48 for a Mercedes Vito (up to 6 passengers) from Istanbul Airport to Fatih, which includes Eminönü and Sirkeci. Larger groups travel in a Sprinter, a V-Class VIP is available, and child seats are provided on request. There is no extra charge for traffic or flight delays.
The drive is roughly 45–50 km. With a clear road it takes a little over 45 minutes; in the daytime allow up to 75 minutes or more, because the last stretch runs along the Golden Horn waterfront, where traffic is heavy. Some hotel streets around the piers and the bazaars are narrow or busy with deliveries, so tell us your exact hotel address when you book. If a car cannot stop at the door, the driver takes you to the closest point it can and points you to the entrance. See the price for Fatih, or the full list on our transfer prices page.
Option 2: Havaist HVL-13 to Eminönü Pier
The Havaist HVL-13 coach leaves from platform 11 and calls at Miniatürk, Hasköy Parkı, Türabi Baba, Şişhane and Eminönü İskele (the ferry pier) before ending at Çatladıkapı. It takes about 110 minutes. At the time of writing there are 21 departures a day from 05:00 to 23:45, roughly every 45–60 minutes; check hava.ist before you travel, because timetables change.
- Fare: ≈€8.50 (₺470) with an Istanbulkart, the Havaist app or an online ticket, or ≈€10.50 (₺590) with a contactless bank card. Cash is not accepted.
- Luggage: two bags travel free in the hold; each extra bag costs ≈€2 (₺120).
- Getting off: the Eminönü stop is by the piers, so the Spice Bazaar, the Galata Bridge and the T1 and T5 trams are all within a short walk. Sirkeci hotels are about 530 m away.
The coach does not take you to your door, so it works best if your hotel is close to the water. For the full timetable and all lines, see our Havaist airport bus guide.
Option 3: Metro and Marmaray to Sirkeci
Since 20 June 2026 the M11 runs from Istanbul Airport to Halkalı, where it meets the Marmaray. This is the only rail route to Sirkeci without a change in the city centre.
- Buy an Istanbulkart at the machines in the M11 station under the terminal. Check the destination on the train: you want Halkalı, not Gayrettepe.
- Ride the M11 to Halkalı, about 33 minutes. The fare is ≈€0.85 (₺47.89), taken at the airport gate.
- At Halkalı, walk a few minutes to the Marmaray and take any train towards Gebze, which passes Yenikapı and reaches Sirkeci in about 35 minutes by our estimate. On a visitor Istanbulkart the gate takes the line's highest fare, ≈€1.50 (₺82.17), with no refund at the exit.
- Take the escalators up from the deep platforms. The Eminönü pier is about 530 m from Sirkeci, and the T1 tram stop is a few minutes' walk from the station.
Allow about 1 hour 30 minutes in all. A visitor Istanbulkart gets no transfer discount, so each leg is charged in full. Marmaray trains leave Halkalı about every 15 minutes. On weekdays the last one towards Gebze leaves Halkalı at 23:28, so leave the airport by about 22:45; on Friday and Saturday nights extra trains run every 30 minutes until 01:28. The M11 itself runs from about 06:14 to 00:29 towards Halkalı. Our M11 guide has the fares and timetable, and the Istanbulkart guide explains the card.
Option 4: Taxi
Official taxis wait outside the arrivals exits. Use the queue, insist on the meter and ignore anyone who offers a flat fare before you reach the rank. A yellow taxi charges ≈€1.30 (₺71.94) to start plus ≈€0.85 (₺47.92) per km, with a minimum fare of ≈€4 (₺230), no night rate and tolls extra. Slow traffic is charged by time at ≈€11 (₺598.90) an hour, which matters on the waterfront road. A taxi to Sultanahmet, a similar distance, typically runs about €40–52 (₺2,250–2,900). Card terminals become mandatory in taxis on 16 November 2026, so carry some lira until then. Our taxi prices guide has the full tariff.
Trams From Eminönü and Sirkeci: T1 and T5
- T1 stops at Eminönü and Sirkeci. Towards Bağcılar it continues to Gülhane, Sultanahmet, Çemberlitaş, Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı (for the Grand Bazaar), Laleli and Aksaray. In the other direction it crosses the Galata Bridge to Karaköy and Tophane. It runs from 06:00 to midnight and every 2 minutes or so at peak. On Istanbul Marathon day, held in autumn, the T1 is cut back (in 2025 it ran only between Beyazıt and Bağcılar), so check Metro Istanbul's announcements.
- T5 starts at Eminönü and runs along the Golden Horn to Fener, Balat and Ayvansaray, then on towards Eyüpsultan. It also runs from 06:00 to midnight. Balat is the stop for Chora (Kariye) Mosque, about 1.2 km away, a 16-minute walk uphill. At the time of writing it is closed to visitors on Fridays; check before you go.
From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW)
Sabiha Gökçen is on the Asian side, so every route to Eminönü and Sirkeci crosses the Bosphorus.
- M4 and Marmaray: ride the M4 to Ayrılık Çeşmesi (about 44 minutes), change to the Marmaray and go two stops under the Bosphorus to Sirkeci, about 7 minutes. Allow around 1 hour 30 minutes in total. Leave the airport by about 22:45 for the last trains on weekdays. The M4 fare is ≈€0.85 (₺46.20), and the Marmaray gate takes up to ≈€1.50 (₺82.17) on a visitor card.
- M4 and ferry: ride the M4 to its last stop, Kadıköy, walk to the pier and take the ferry to Eminönü, a crossing of 20–25 minutes with the old-city skyline ahead. The fare is ≈€1.15 (₺65.21) with an Istanbulkart. Ferries run less often in the evening and stop for the night, so this route suits daytime arrivals; check Şehir Hatları for the last boat. With heavier bags you can take the Havabüs to Kadıköy (≈€5.50 / ₺300) and walk to the pier.
- Private transfer or taxi: the drive crosses the Bosphorus and takes roughly 60–90 minutes depending on traffic. Our transfer to the Fatih and Sultanahmet area starts from €59 per vehicle; see the Sabiha Gökçen to Fatih price. A taxi adds a bridge or tunnel toll to the meter.
Our Sabiha Gökçen to Sultanahmet guide covers the same rail route in more detail, and Istanbul Airport vs Sabiha Gökçen helps if you are still choosing a flight.

Ferries and Bosphorus Tours From Eminönü
Eminönü is the main departure point for ferries across the Bosphorus and up the strait. Times and fares change by season, so check Şehir Hatları (the city ferry company) before you go.
- Kadıköy: the crossing takes 20–25 minutes and costs ≈€1.15 (₺65.21) with an Istanbulkart.
- Short Bosphorus tour: at the time of writing, Şehir Hatları runs a short tour from Eminönü via Üsküdar to Ortaköy, daily in the afternoon, about 30 minutes each way. Foreign passengers pay a separate tour fare, which is posted on the Şehir Hatları site.
- Long Bosphorus tour: a morning departure runs up the strait to Anadolu Kavağı and returns in the afternoon, according to third-party timetables from June 2026. Private operators also sell 90-minute round trips from the same area; compare times and prices before you buy.
Our two-hour Bosphorus cruise tour is listed on our private tours page if you prefer a private outing.
Back to the Airport From Eminönü and Sirkeci
For an early flight, a pre-booked transfer is the safest choice, because the trams and the Marmaray stop around midnight and the first trains start around 06:00. You can add the return trip when you book. By rail the route is the Marmaray from Sirkeci to Halkalı and then the M11 to the airport; allow about 1 hour 30 minutes plus a safety margin. If you prefer the Havaist coach, check the current departure times from Eminönü on hava.ist.
