Istanbul Airport to Karaköy & Galata Tower
Short answer: from Istanbul Airport (IST) the closest public-transport stop to Galata Tower is Şişhane. Take the Havaist HVL-13 coach (≈€8.50 / ₺470 per person) or the M11 and M2 metro, then walk about 4 minutes downhill. For Karaköy itself, walk down from Şişhane, ride the Tünel funicular, or use the F1 funicular and T1 tram. A taxi costs roughly €40–50 (₺2,200–2,800), and a private transfer from Istanbul Airport to Beyoğlu starts from €44 per vehicle. From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), the Havabüs plus M2 or the M4 and Marmaray both work, and a private transfer starts from €57.

Galata Tower and Karaköy sit on the northern bank of the Golden Horn, about 49 km by road from Istanbul Airport and about 42 km from Sabiha Gökçen. The tower is at the top of a steep hill, Karaköy is at the bottom, and the two are about 7 minutes apart on foot, uphill. That shapes every choice below: a bus or metro stop that is close to the tower is not always close to a Karaköy hotel, and the last few hundred metres on foot can be harder than the journey itself. This guide covers Galata, Karaköy and Tophane only. For Taksim Square and İstiklal Avenue, see the Taksim guide.
Istanbul Airport to Galata and Karaköy: All Options at a Glance
| Option | Time | Cost (2026) | Ends at | With luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Havaist HVL-13 | Under 110 min (the line's full run) | ≈€8.50 (₺470) per person | Şişhane, then a short walk down to the tower | Good, luggage hold | Visitors staying near the tower |
| M11 + M2 metro | Roughly 65–80 min to Şişhane | About €1.70 (₺94; visitor card, plus the ₺165 card) | Şişhane | Hard at rush hour | Light packers by day |
| Taxi | About 45–60 min off-peak | ≈€40–50 (₺2,200–2,800), tolls extra | Nearest open street | Good | Door to door without booking |
| Private transfer | About 40–60 min off-peak | From €44 per vehicle | Nearest open street to your hotel | Best, space per vehicle | Families, groups, late arrivals |
Times assume normal traffic; the drive can take 75–100 minutes at weekday rush hours. The taxi range is the one we quote for Galataport; Galata and Karaköy are close by, and the meter decides the final fare. Metro and coach fares are approximate and change often.
Option 1: Havaist HVL-13 to Şişhane
Havaist's HVL-13 is the Sultanahmet line, and it is the best coach for Galata. It leaves from platform 11 and calls at Miniatürk, Hasköy Parkı, Türabi Baba and Şişhane before the Eminönü ferry piers and its last stop at Çatladıkapı. The whole line takes about 110 minutes, and Şişhane comes before the end. Departures run from 05:00 to 23:45, 21 a day, roughly every 45–60 minutes. Check hava.ist or the Havaist app before you travel, as timetables change.
From Şişhane it is about 280 m (around 4 minutes, downhill) to Galata Tower. The HVL-9 coach to Taksim is the alternative, but it ends about 1.6 km uphill from the tower, so HVL-13 is the better choice for this part of town. The fare is ≈€8.50 (₺470) per person with an Istanbulkart or the Havaist app, ≈€10.50 (₺590) by contactless bank card, and no cash. Two bags travel free; an extra bag is ≈€2 (₺120). Full timetables and platform details are in the Havaist guide.
Option 2: M11 and M2 Metro to Şişhane
The M11 runs from the airport to Gayrettepe in about 30 minutes, every 15 minutes. Change there to the M2, ride south through Taksim, and get off one stop later at Şişhane. The Taksim guide gives 60–75 minutes to Taksim, so allow a little more for Şişhane. The first M11 train leaves the airport at about 06:10 and the last at about 00:21 towards Gayrettepe, but the M2 connection ends earlier, and the Taksim guide treats about 23:30 as the last practical connection. Check the M2 timetable if you land late.
A visitor's Istanbulkart is the simplest way to pay. The anonymous card costs ≈€3 (₺165) and gives no discount on connections; the cheaper transfer fares are for personalised cards held by residents. Allow about €1.70 (₺94) in fares, the visitor-card figure we quote for the same journey to Taksim (Şişhane is one stop further), plus the card. With a large suitcase, the stairs and crowds at Gayrettepe are the weak point. The M11 guide has the details.
Getting From Şişhane or Taksim Down to Karaköy
- On foot from Şişhane: walk down to the tower and keep going downhill. From the tower to the Karaköy T1 stop it is about 0.56 km, roughly 7 minutes, and steep.
- Tünel funicular: the historic Tünel runs between the south end of İstiklal Avenue and Karaköy.
- F1 and T1 from Taksim: if you stay on the M2 to Taksim, take the F1 funicular down to Kabataş (about 2.5 minutes), then the T1 tram three stops to Karaköy via Fındıklı and Tophane. This is the longer route, with a visitor-card total of up to about €3.50 (₺186).
The T1 runs from 06:00 to midnight, about every 2 minutes at peak.
Option 3: Taxi
A yellow taxi charges ≈€1.30 (₺71.94) to start and ≈€0.85 (₺47.92) per km, with a ≈€4 (₺230) minimum and tolls extra. There is no night rate. The road distance from IST to Galata or Karaköy is about 49 km, so expect a fare in the region of ≈€40–50 (₺2,200–2,800). Card payment in taxis becomes mandatory on 16 November 2026, so carry cash until then. Our taxi price guide explains the tariff and the tolls.
Option 4: Private Transfer
A private transfer is priced per vehicle and the price is shown before you pay. A Mercedes Vito takes up to 6 people with luggage; the VIP Mercedes V-Class and the Sprinter are available for other group sizes, and child seats are provided on request. Our drivers speak English. We track your flight, and there is no extra charge for traffic or flight delays.
After you land, your driver sends the exact meeting point and a short video on WhatsApp, then waits just outside the arrivals exit. The drive is about 45 km on our Beyoğlu route page, 40–60 minutes off-peak and 75–100 minutes at the weekday peaks. The price for Istanbul Airport to Beyoğlu starts from €44. For the Karaköy waterfront, see Istanbul Airport to Galataport from €44.
Three hotels around Galata and Karaköy have their own pages, so you can book to the hotel name:
- Istanbul Airport to Stern Hotel Karaköy
- Istanbul Airport to The Wings Hotels Karaköy
- Istanbul Airport to Petra Galata Hotel
See all prices on our transfer prices page, or book from the Istanbul Airport transfer page.
From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) to Galata and Karaköy
Sabiha Gökçen is on the Asian side, about 42 km from Galata by road, and the public routes need a change or two.
- Havabüs plus M2: the Havabüs to Taksim runs every 30 minutes from 06:30 to 00:30 and takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours, for ≈€8.50 (₺485; ₺590 by contactless bank card). From Taksim, take the M2 one stop to Şişhane and walk down.
- M4, Marmaray and T1: take the M4 to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, change to the Marmaray and ride to Sirkeci, then take the T1 tram two stops to Karaköy. You can also get off at Eminönü and walk across the Galata Bridge, 0.91 km or about 12 minutes. The Galataport trip on these lines costs about €3 (₺175) on a visitor card, and Karaköy is on the same tram line. The M4 runs from 06:00 to 23:59, and all night on Fridays and Saturdays.
- Drive: a private transfer from Sabiha Gökçen to Beyoğlu takes about 50–80 minutes on our route page, from €57. See Sabiha Gökçen to Beyoğlu and Sabiha Gökçen to Galataport (from €57). A taxi to Galataport is roughly €38–45 (₺2,100–2,500).
The Sabiha Gökçen to Taksim guide has the Havabüs details. Book from the Sabiha Gökçen transfer page.
Galata Tower: Hours and Tickets
The official site lists Galata Tower as open daily from 08:30 to 23:00, with the last entry at about 22:00 and a day session that ends at about 18:30. At the time of writing, a ticket for foreign visitors was reported at 30 euros, from a secondary source that cites the official tariff; the official site did not show a price, so check before you go. Tickets are sold as e-tickets on galatakulesi.gov.tr. Museum Pass Istanbul is reported to cover the day session only, so it is not valid after about 18:15.
Where a Car Can Stop
The streets right around the tower are narrow, steep and, in parts, pedestrian. Lanes such as Serdar-ı Ekrem and Galip Dede are very narrow, and parts are closed to traffic. Before you travel, ask your hotel where cars usually stop; your driver gets you as close as the street allows. A taxi or transfer stops at the nearest open street, and you walk the last stretch, often downhill with a suitcase. Give your driver the hotel name and street rather than just "Galata", and ask your hotel for the nearest point where a car can stop.
Karaköy Ferry Piers and Galataport
Karaköy has ferry piers, with boats to Kadıköy and Üsküdar on the Asian side. A ferry between Kadıköy and Karaköy costs about €1.15 (₺65.21) with an Istanbulkart. From Sabiha Gökçen, one more option is the M4 to Kadıköy and then that ferry, which we price at about €2 (₺111) in total on a visitor card.
Galataport, the cruise terminal and waterfront development, is next door. It is about 0.8 km, roughly 11 minutes' walk, from the Karaköy T1 stop, or about 6 minutes from the Tophane T1 stop. From the Tophane gate of Galataport to Galata Tower is about 1 km, around 13 minutes. The Galataport guide and the cruise port guide cover the terminal.
Walking Times Around Galata

| Galata Tower to Karaköy T1 | 0.56 km | About 7 min, steep |
| Karaköy T1 to Galataport | 0.80 km | About 11 min |
| Tophane T1 to Galataport | – | About 6 min |
| Galataport (Tophane gate) to Galata Tower | 0.96 km | About 13 min |
| Eminönü to Karaköy over the Galata Bridge | 0.91 km | About 12 min |
Times are at an easy walking pace of about 5 km/h and do not allow for luggage or stops.
Which Option Suits You
- One or two travellers with light bags, daytime arrival: HVL-13 to Şişhane, or the M11 and M2 metro. You will walk the last 4 minutes downhill.
- A hotel in Karaköy: a taxi or private transfer takes you to the nearest open street. If you take the coach, you can ride the Tünel funicular or walk down from Şişhane.
- Families, groups or lots of luggage: a private transfer, priced per vehicle, usually costs about the same as the coach fares for a group plus a taxi at the end.
- Late arrivals: the last HVL-13 leaves the airport at 23:45, the T1 stops at midnight and the last practical metro connection from the airport is about 23:30, so after that a taxi or a pre-booked transfer is the practical way. There is no night service on HVL-13.
Going Back to the Airport
Havaist also serves the airport from the city, but its return stops and times differ from the airport direction, so check hava.ist the day before. For a taxi or a pre-booked driver, leave generous time for traffic, and plan to reach the airport 2–3 hours before an international departure. We offer return transfers from the same hotels, such as Stern Hotel Karaköy, The Wings Hotels Karaköy, Petra Galata Hotel and Beyoğlu.

Can a car reach Galata Tower?
