Stern Hotel Karaköy is a new hotel on Ağaç Tulumba Sokak, a short lane just off Necatibey Caddesi, a few minutes on foot from the Karaköy tram stop and ferry pier. Istanbul Airport (IST) is about 43 km away: around 45 minutes on a clear road and 55 to 90 minutes in traffic, all on the European side.
Because the hotel is new, it helps to give the full address, Ağaç Tulumba Sokak 6, and not just the name. By metro: down to Karaköy on the Tünel funicular
Karaköy lies about 60 m below Şişhane station, and the streets in between are steep and cobbled. With a suitcase, let the Tünel funicular (F2) do the descent. Opened in 1875, it is one of the oldest underground railways in the world.
- Take the M11 from the station under the terminal to Gayrettepe, about 30 minutes.
- Change to the M2 towards Yenikapı and ride four stops to Şişhane.
- Leave by the Tünel-side exit. The upper F2 station is about 110 m away; ride the funicular down to Karaköy.
- From the lower station, walk about 270 m on the flat to Ağaç Tulumba Sokak 6.
With an Istanbulkart this costs about ₺140 per person and takes 65 to 80 minutes. If the F2 isn't running when you get there, stay on the M2 one more stop to Haliç, leave by the Azapkapı end and walk about 900 m along Tersane and Necatibey Caddesi, all flat (about ₺94 in total). Havaist and taxi to Karaköy
Havaist HVL-13 is the useful coach for this side of the Golden Horn. Board at platform 11 on floor -2 (₺470); it runs via Şişhane to the Eminönü ferry piers. Get off at Eminönü İskele and either walk about 1 km across the Galata Bridge, which is flat all the way, or take the T1 tram one stop to Karaköy. There are 21 departures a day, from 05:00 to 23:45. After midnight, HVL-9 to Taksim still runs (00:30, 01:15, 02:15 and 04:30, from platform 16), but from Taksim you would need a taxi. Don't board HVL-11: it goes to Sabiha Gökçen. Yellow taxis charge ₺71.94 to start and ₺47.92 per km, with a ₺230 minimum and no night rate. To the hotel that comes to about ₺2,100–2,400, the higher figure if the driver uses the tolled Northern Marmara Motorway; tolls and slow-traffic time are extra. Arriving at Ağaç Tulumba Sokak
The hotel is on a short, narrow lane paved with stone setts and without pavements, about 20 m off Necatibey Caddesi, a one-way main road. Cars turn into the lane from Necatibey Caddesi. If the driver can't stop right at the door, the main road is only a few steps away, and the driver helps you with your bags.
Not Nordstern Hotel Galata. Nordstern is a separate hotel on Karaköy Square (Tersane Caddesi 5), about 200 m to the west. With two similar names so close together, show any driver the address, Ağaç Tulumba Sokak 6, rather than just the name.
Everything around the hotel is on the level: the T1 Karaköy tram stop is about 230 m away, the lower Tünel station 270 m and the Karaköy ferry pier 350 m. Galataport's cruise terminal entrance is about 1.1 km on foot.
