The Public Hotel stands on Turnacıbaşı Caddesi in Kuloğlu, a few steps off İstiklal Caddesi near Galatasaray. It is about 42 km from Istanbul Airport (IST): around 45 minutes with no traffic and 55 to 85 minutes at busier times, with no Bosphorus crossing.
İstiklal Caddesi is pedestrianised, so cars can't use it. A private transfer comes in the back way instead, along one-way, cobbled Turnacıbaşı Caddesi from the Tarlabaşı side. By metro to Taksim, then along İstiklal
This is the cheapest route and, with light bags, a quick one:
- Follow the Metro signs to the M11 station under the terminal and ride to Gayrettepe, about 30 minutes.
- Change to the M2 towards Yenikapı and ride three stops to Taksim: Şişli-Mecidiyeköy, Osmanbey, Taksim.
- Come up to Taksim Square and walk about 700 m, around 10 minutes, along İstiklal Caddesi. Turnacıbaşı Caddesi is about 130 m before the Galatasaray Lisesi tram stop.
The fare is about ₺94 per person with an Istanbulkart, and the trip takes 55 to 70 minutes. You could also stay on the M2 to Şişhane and walk about 760 m up İstiklal, a gentle slope. The historic T2 tram runs along İstiklal and stops at Galatasaray Lisesi, about 140 m from the hotel, but check that it is running before you rely on it. Havaist and taxi to İstiklal
Havaist HVL-9 leaves from platform 16 on floor -2 and takes about 90 minutes to Taksim: ₺470 with an Istanbulkart, the Havaist app or an online ticket, or ₺590 with a contactless bank card; no cash. From the stop on the Gezi Park side of the square it is about 1.4 km, roughly 19 minutes, along İstiklal to the hotel, or a short taxi ride round to Turnacıbaşı Caddesi. HVL-9 also runs at night, at 00:30, 01:15, 02:15 and 04:30. Don't board HVL-11, which goes to Sabiha Gökçen.
A yellow taxi charges ₺71.94 to start and ₺47.92 per km, with a ₺230 minimum and no night rate. To the hotel that comes to about ₺2,100–2,500, the higher figure if the driver takes the tolled Northern Marmara Motorway; tolls and slow-traffic time are extra. Taxis can't drive onto İstiklal, so ask for Turnacıbaşı Caddesi from the Tarlabaşı side. The deadline for card terminals in taxis has been extended to 16 November 2026, so carry cash. Your private transfer and the drop-off on Turnacıbaşı
Book online with your flight number and the hotel name. We follow the flight, so an early or late landing moves the pickup with it. After you land, the driver sends a WhatsApp message with the exact meeting point and a short video. Airport rules in Türkiye don't allow drivers to wait inside the terminal, so you meet just outside the arrivals exit.
From the airport, the usual route comes down the O-2 to Piyalepaşa, then via Ömer Hayyam Caddesi and Balo Sokağı into Turnacıbaşı Caddesi, a one-way street paved with stone setts. Whether the car can stop right at the door depends on the street at the time, so the driver gets as close as it allows and helps with your bags. Expect slopes and cobbles: one side of the building faces İstiklal, and the other drops towards Cihangir.

A building from 1901
The building was designed by the architect Hovsep Aznavur and built between 1898 and 1901. State tax records list it as the Nile Apartments, and it has been restored as a first-degree historical monument under the Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Board. Its 52 high-ceilinged rooms are arranged around a planted courtyard under a glass roof that opens.
You may also see the hotel listed as Hotel The Public, Ikonik The Public or Occidental Public. It is in Kuloğlu, near Galatasaray, rather than down in Karaköy or Galata; Galata Tower is about 1.2 km away.
