Petra Galata Hotel is a small hotel on the corner of Lüleci Hendek Caddesi and Kumbaracı Yokuşu, on the lower slopes of Galata just above Tophane. Booking sites also list it under its former name, Ali Khan Hotel. From Istanbul Airport (IST) it is about 42 km: roughly 45 minutes on an empty road and 60 to 90 minutes in traffic.
The last few hundred metres are the tricky part. Both streets are narrow and one-way, and Kumbaracı Yokuşu is steep. A private transfer brings you down that slope to the hotel corner, with a driver who has tracked your flight, messaged you on WhatsApp after you landed and met you just outside the arrivals exit. Two metro routes: steep and short, or flat and longer
Both start with the M11 from the station under the terminal (follow the Metro signs) to Gayrettepe, about 30 minutes. Then choose:
- Via Şişhane, fewest changes: take the M2 towards Yenikapı four stops to Şişhane. Leave by the Tünel-side exit and walk about 430 m down Kumbaracı Yokuşu, a drop of about 55 m on a concrete and stone surface. About ₺94 per person and 60–75 minutes in all. Fine with light bags, hard going with a heavy case.
- Via Tophane, flat finish: ride the M2 only three stops to Taksim, take the F1 funicular down to Kabataş, then the T1 tram towards Bağcılar two stops to Tophane. The hotel is about 190 m away, gently uphill. About ₺186 per person and 80–100 minutes.
The F1 and T1 stop around midnight, so for the Tophane route board the M11 by about 23:00. For the Şişhane route, board by about 23:30 from Sunday to Thursday: the last M2 from Gayrettepe towards Yenikapı leaves at 00:12, and the M11 doesn't run overnight. Our M11 metro guide has more on the line.
Havaist and taxi
Havaist HVL-9 runs to Taksim from platform 16 on floor -2: ₺470 with an Istanbulkart, the Havaist app or an online ticket, ₺590 with a contactless bank card, and no cash. The coach takes about 90 minutes and also runs at night, with departures at 00:30, 01:15, 02:15 and 04:30. From its stop on the Gezi Park side of Taksim Square, walk about 700 m to the funicular entrance and continue on the F1 and T1 as above, or take a short taxi. Don't board HVL-11: it goes to Sabiha Gökçen.
A yellow taxi charges ₺71.94 to start and ₺47.92 per km, with a ₺230 minimum and no night rate. That comes to about ₺2,100–2,400 to the hotel, the higher figure if the driver takes the tolled Northern Marmara Motorway. Tolls and slow-traffic time are added. Arriving at the corner of Lüleci Hendek and Kumbaracı Yokuşu
Petra Galata is at Lüleci Hendek Caddesi 2, where the street meets Kumbaracı Yokuşu. Both are narrow, one-way residential streets: Lüleci Hendek is paved with stone, and Kumbaracı Yokuşu is a steep concrete slope. Cars come down Kumbaracı Yokuşu from the Asmalı Mescit side to reach the corner. Space to stop may be tight on streets this narrow, so the driver unloads quickly and helps you with your bags to the door.
On foot the location works well: the T1 Tophane tram stop is about 190 m away, the Galataport cruise terminal entrance about 620 m, and Galata Tower about 550 m uphill.
Booking sites list the hotel as Petra Galata Hotel Istanbul (ex. Ali Khan Hotel), at the same address. If an older confirmation says Ali Khan Hotel, it refers to the same hotel.
