Istanbul Museums: Hours, Tickets and the Museum Pass

Updated 25 October 2026

Short answer: Istanbul's museums are run by different bodies, so fees and closed days differ. The Ministry museums (Archaeology Museums, Turkish and Islamic Arts, Galata Tower, Rumeli Hisarı) charge in euros, are mostly open daily and are covered by the Museum Pass Istanbul. The private and municipal ones (Istanbul Modern, Pera, Sakıp Sabancı, Rahmi M. Koç, Panorama 1453) charge in lira, close on Mondays and are not covered by the pass, and Dolmabahçe and Beylerbeyi palaces also close on Mondays. A private transfer from Istanbul Airport to Taksim, the base for Pera, Istanbul Modern and Galata Tower, is from €44 per vehicle, and the price is shown before you pay.

Most visitors plan around Hagia Sophia and Topkapı and then ask which other museums are worth a half day. This page puts the rest on one screen: the 2026 fee, hours, closed day and nearest stop. It also explains what the Museum Pass Istanbul covers and how to reach each area from Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW).

Fees and hours are those published by the museums in late October 2026. Euro equivalents of lira prices use about 55.6 lira to the euro, and lira prices can change without notice. The Archaeology Museums ran to 21:00 in summer, and winter hours are usually shorter, so check the official site before you go. Sources are listed at the end.

Two Rules That Explain Most of the Table

Who runs the museum decides how it is priced. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism sets foreign fees in euros, with new prices from 1 April 2027. The National Palaces administration (Dolmabahçe, Beylerbeyi, Topkapı) prices in lira. Istanbul Modern, Pera, Sakıp Sabancı and Rahmi M. Koç are private, and Panorama 1453 is run by the city.

Monday is the day to plan around. The Archaeology Museums, the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, Galata Tower and Topkapı are open on Monday. Everything else in the table is closed, and Topkapı closes on Tuesday instead.

The Ministry Museums

Istanbul Archaeology Museums

The complex is at Osman Hamdi Bey Yokuşu in Gülhane, and the nearest tram stop is T1 Gülhane. It is open every day from 09:00 to 18:30, and the ticket office stops selling at 17:30. The fee for foreign visitors is 15 euros in 2026 and 16 euros from 1 April 2027. The MüzeKart is for Turkish citizens and does not apply to visitors.

Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts

The museum is in the İbrahim Paşa Palace on the old Hippodrome in Sultanahmet, at At Meydanı Sokak 12. It has the same 09:00 to 18:30 hours, with the ticket office closing at 17:30, and is open daily. The fee is 17 euros in 2026 and 19 euros from 1 April 2027.

Galata Tower and Rumeli Hisarı

Galata Tower is also a Ministry museum: 30 euros in 2026, 35 euros from 1 April 2027, open 08:30 to 18:30 with a night session until 22:00. Our Galata Tower guide has the visiting details. Rumeli Hisarı, the Bosphorus fortress built in 1452, costs 6 euros in 2026 and 7 euros from 1 April 2027. It is closed on Mondays. It fits into a day on the upper Bosphorus; see Istanbul Airport to Ortaköy and Bebek.

Topkapı and Hagia Sophia

Topkapı Palace (National Palaces, closed on Tuesday) and Hagia Sophia (a working mosque with its own foreigner fee, not covered by the Museum Pass) have their own sections, with current hours and prices, in our Istanbul attractions guide. For the palace's history and layout, read the Topkapı Palace blog post.

The Private and Municipal Museums

Istanbul Modern

Istanbul's main modern and contemporary art museum is on the Bosphorus at Tophane, beside Galataport. Hours are 10:00 to 18:00 Tuesday to Thursday and at weekends, and 10:00 to 20:00 on Friday, with the last entry 30 minutes before closing. It is closed on Mondays, on 1 January and on the first day of the religious holidays. International visitors pay ₺1,000 in 2026 and reduced tickets are ₺650. The free slots (Tuesday and Thursday mornings for some groups) are for residents of Türkiye only, and children under 12 enter free. Tickets are sold on the museum's own ticketing site and on Biletix. Cruise passengers can use Galataport to Istanbul sights.

Pera Museum

Pera is on Meşrutiyet Caddesi in the former Hotel Bristol building from 1893, with lifts to every floor. Full price is ₺450 in 2026, with reduced tickets at ₺250 for students over 12, teachers and visitors over 60. Children aged 12 and under enter free. Friday evening from 18:00 to 22:00 is free for everyone, and on Fridays the museum stays open until 22:00. It is closed on Mondays, on 1 January and on the first day of Ramazan and Kurban Bayramı. Walk down from the M2 Şişhane stop, about 10 minutes.

Sakıp Sabancı Museum

The museum stands in Emirgan, on the Bosphorus shore road, with a collection that includes book arts and calligraphy, and a garden with a Bosphorus view. Entry is ₺450 for adults in 2026 and free on Tuesdays; discounted tickets are ₺330, and children aged 12 and under enter free. It opens 10:00 to 18:00 Tuesday to Sunday and closes on Mondays. The car park holds only about 30 cars. Its own website still lists old bus numbers, so use the İETT route planner for the day you travel. We cover the neighbourhood in Istanbul Airport to Sarıyer and Emirgan.

Rahmi M. Koç Museum

This industrial and transport museum is on the Golden Horn at Hasköy, with trains, boats, cars and aircraft. It costs ₺1,000 for adults in 2026. Weekday hours are 09:30 to 17:30 and weekends 09:30 to 18:00, with the last tickets 30 minutes before closing. It is closed on Mondays, on the eve and first day of religious holidays, and on 31 December and 1 January. Our Istanbul with kids guide has more on family days out.

Panorama 1453 History Museum

The city opened this museum in 2009 in the Topkapı Culture Park. It bills itself as the world's first full panoramic museum and depicts the conquest of 29 May 1453. Foreign visitors pay ₺900 in 2026 and it is open 08:30 to 16:30. It is closed on Mondays.

Dolmabahçe and Beylerbeyi Palaces

Both are run by the National Palaces administration, and both are closed on Mondays. Dolmabahçe costs ₺2,000 in 2026 for the Selamlık, the Harem and the Painting Museum together, and the ticket office closes at 17:00. It also closes on 1 January and the first day of Ramazan and Kurban Bayramı. Beylerbeyi, on the Asian shore, costs ₺800 and ₺100 for the garden only. If you plan several palaces, the National Palaces also sells passes valid for a month, with one entry per site: ₺2,750 for the European or Asian set of sites and ₺3,500 for all of them in 2026. Our Dolmabahçe Palace guide has more on the palace.

Chora (Kariye)

The building has served as a mosque with paid entry for foreign visitors since August 2024. Press reports at the time of writing put the fee at 20 euros, with Friday kept for worship and visiting paused around prayers, and the pass does not cover it. Check the fee and hours before you go. Our Balat and Fener guide and mosques beyond Sultanahmet cover the area.

Museum Pass Istanbul: What It Covers

The pass costs 105 euros in 2026 and 120 euros from 1 April 2027. It is valid for five days from your first museum entry, allows one entry per museum and covers 13 Ministry museums. Night museum sessions are not included.

The four Ministry museums in the table above (Archaeology, Turkish and Islamic Arts, Galata Tower and Rumeli Hisarı) add up to 68 euros in 2026. Topkapı with the Harem and Hagia Irene is ₺2,750, about 49 euros, so the pass pays for itself only if you do Topkapı and most of those four within five days. If your list is Istanbul Modern, Pera and a palace, the pass saves nothing. The nationwide Museum Pass Türkiye costs 165 euros for 15 days and rises to 185 euros on 1 April 2027. It makes sense only if you will also visit museums outside Istanbul.
