About Zeytinburnu: From Olive Groves to Turkey's Leather Trade

Zeytinburnu's name literally means "olive point" in Turkish. After Mehmed the Conqueror took Constantinople in 1453, a group of priests from Jerusalem left the city center and settled along what is now Zeytinburnu's coastline, planting olive groves and farmland that soon made the area known as a pleasant, green retreat just outside the city walls.

Everything changed when Mehmed the Conqueror resettled leatherworkers from Edirne and across Anatolia in the neighboring Kazlıçeşme area. This single decision launched what would become Turkey's most historic leather trade district — Kazlıçeşme's tanning and leather industry has operated continuously for more than 150 years, and though production has since largely moved to Tuzla, the area remains closely associated with leather trading in Turkey to this day.

Istanbul's Gateway to the West

Historically and today, Zeytinburnu has served as Istanbul's gateway toward Europe, its flat, coast-hugging terrain making it a natural point along international transport routes. This constant flow of people and trade gave the district a cosmopolitan character for centuries. Zeytinburnu became an independent district in 1957, having previously been split between Fatih and Bakırköy.
