About Bayrampaşa: A Military Staging Ground Turned Central District

Bayrampaşa takes its name from Bayram Pasha, an Ottoman Grand Vizier appointed in 1636 who died during a campaign to Baghdad in 1638 and is buried in a tomb in Istanbul's Cerrahpaşa area. The district's location was militarily significant even earlier — during Mehmed the Conqueror's 1453 siege of Constantinople, the area served as a staging ground and headquarters for Ottoman forces, later hosting a military hospital and barracks.

Bayrampaşa remained largely agricultural until the mid-20th century, when Istanbul's post-1955 urban expansion and industrialization transformed it into a working-class, industrial neighborhood. A wave of Muslim migrants from the Balkans — including a group from Filibe (Plovdiv), Bulgaria who settled here in 1927 — added to the district's population, followed by further migration from Thrace, the Black Sea region and Central Anatolia through the 1960s. Bayrampaşa officially became its own district, separate from Eyüp, in 1990.

One of Istanbul's Most Central Districts

Today Bayrampaşa is known for being remarkably central — just 3 km from Istanbul's historic core around Fatih. It hosts the city's main bus terminal (Otogar), wholesale vegetable market, and numerous small industrial workshops, alongside metro and metrobus connections that make it one of the most accessible districts in the city.
