About Gaziosmanpaşa: Named After a War Hero

Before the 1950s, the area now known as Gaziosmanpaşa was largely empty, rocky farmland under Eyüp district, known locally as "Taşlıtarla" — literally "stony field" — because the ground was too poor for agriculture. A small settlement called Küçükköy had existed there for around 200 years, first founded by migrants from the nearby Rami neighborhood, later joined by ethnic Turks arriving from Greece after the Turkish War of Independence.

The district became independent from Eyüp in 1963, and residents chose to rename it after Gazi Osman Pasha, a celebrated Ottoman general renowned for his 145-day defense of Plevna during the 1877-78 Russo-Turkish War. Captured after leading a breakout attempt, he was treated with such respect by the Russian Tsar that he was awarded the Order of the White Eagle, and Sultan Abdülhamid II granted him the honorific title "Gazi" (veteran/hero) upon his return to Istanbul. He's credited in military history as a pioneer of trench warfare, and is buried in a tomb in the courtyard of Fatih Mosque.

Rapid Growth and Ottoman Water Heritage

Gaziosmanpaşa's population exploded through the late 20th century, driven heavily by Balkan migration and internal migration from across Turkey, at one point reaching over a million residents before the district was split into three in 2008, creating Arnavutköy and Sultangazi. The district also sits along part of the historic Kırkçeşme water supply system, with several Ottoman-era aqueducts, including the Valide, Dolap and Keçesuyu arches, still surviving today.
