✅ What's Included
About Eyüpsultan: A Sacred Site on the Golden Horn
Eyüpsultan takes its name from Ebu Eyyub el-Ensari, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad who hosted him in his home for several months after the migration to Medina. Ebu Eyyub later took part in an early Arab siege of Constantinople in 668-669 AD and was killed near the city walls, requesting before his death that he be buried as close to the walls as possible — intending his grave to serve as a marker for future generations of Muslim soldiers, should the city ever be conquered.
His tomb was rediscovered shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, and Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror built the Eyüp Sultan Mosque complex beside it in 1458 — one of the first major religious structures the Ottomans built in the newly conquered city. The mosque became so significant that, for centuries, Ottoman sultans held a symbolic sword-girding ceremony here upon taking the throne, using the sword of the Caliph Omar as a symbol of just rule.
A Site of Continued Pilgrimage
Though the original mosque was heavily damaged by an earthquake in 1766 and rebuilt from its foundations, Eyüp Sultan Mosque remains a major pilgrimage site, drawing visitors from across Turkey year-round. Eyüpsultan district today stretches along the upper reaches of the Golden Horn, blending this deep religious history with quieter residential neighborhoods.
