About Güngören: From Byzantine Village to Textile Hub

Güngören has one of the more interesting name origins among Istanbul's districts. In Byzantine times, the settlement here was known as "Vitos," a village that contributed to the empire's economy and sat along a section of the Halkalı freshwater supply channels, adding to its importance. During the Ottoman era, shoemakers from the Samatya and Yenikapı districts were granted permission to wash their handmade "yemeni" shoes here, thanks to the area's abundant water — giving the settlement its practical purpose long before industry arrived.

The Greek name "Vitos" was officially changed to "Güngören" in 1935-36, as part of a broader renaming of place names with Greek origins. From the 1950s onward, migrants from Bulgaria, Romania and across Anatolia settled the area rapidly, and Güngören became an independent district in 1992, having previously included what is now Esenler.

Home to Istanbul's Textile Industry

Today Güngören is best known for Merter, one of Turkey's largest wholesale textile and garment districts, packed with clothing manufacturers, showrooms and retailers that supply markets across the country and beyond. Despite covering only around 7 km² — one of Istanbul's smallest districts by area — Güngören has one of the highest population densities in the city.
