About Bağcılar: A Melting Pot in the Heart of Istanbul
Bağcılar is one of the most populous districts in Istanbul, with a history that reflects the wider story of the city's growth. During Ottoman times, the area was part of the Mahmutbey nahiye, one of Istanbul's oldest settlement zones, and was home to a mostly Greek population living in villages with names like Çıfıtburgaz. After the population exchange of 1924, Turks arriving from Greece resettled the area, followed by further migration from Bulgaria in 1929.
The district takes its modern name from 1939, when the village was renamed "Bağcılar" — meaning "vineyard keepers" — after the many grape vineyards that once covered the land. Rapid internal migration from Anatolia through the 1970s and 80s transformed Bağcılar from a small village into one of Istanbul's largest urban districts, officially becoming its own district in 1992.
