About Küçükçekmece: A Sunken City and Istanbul's Oldest Settlement

Küçükçekmece holds a unique place in Istanbul's history: it's considered the starting point of human life in the city. The Yarımburgaz Caves, on a rocky slope north of Küçükçekmece Lake, contain evidence that prehistoric people lived here, surviving through fishing and hunting, long before any other part of Istanbul was settled. Geological and anthropological studies confirm the area's exceptionally long history of habitation.

On a peninsula north of the lake, archaeologists have uncovered the remains of a walled harbor city believed to be Bathonea, a Hellenistic-to-Byzantine-era settlement thought to have been destroyed by a major earthquake in 557 AD. Some of its ruins are believed to lie beneath the lake itself, and ongoing excavations at the site have been recognized as one of the world's most significant archaeological discoveries, drawing researchers and universities studying the district's deep past.

A Living Lake District

The district takes its name from Küçükçekmece Lake, a lagoon roughly 10 km long and 6 km wide, connected to the Marmara Sea by a narrow channel that keeps its waters slightly salty. During Ottoman times, the area around the lake — then known as Region — grew as a rest stop along a major caravan route, complete with a bridge, caravanserai, mosques and mansions.
