About Bakırköy: Nearly 1,700 Years of History on the Marmara Coast

Bakırköy has one of the longest continuous histories of any district in Istanbul. It was founded in 384 AD by the Roman Emperor Constantine as a leisure and seaside resort, originally named "Septimum." Under Byzantine rule it became known as Hebdomon, an important military and political center, before later being called Makrohori and then Makriköy. The district only took its current name, Bakırköy, in 1925 — the same year its coastal neighborhood of Ayastefanos was renamed Yeşilköy.

Yeşilköy has its own remarkable history: it was occupied by Russian forces in 1877-78, and the Treaty of San Stefano — which ended the Russo-Turkish War — was signed here in 1878. In 1909, the Ottoman army known as the Hareket Ordusu gathered in Yeşilköy before marching on Istanbul to suppress an uprising and depose Sultan Abdülhamid II. During the Ottoman era, Sultan Mahmud II also established the State Gunpowder Works (Baruthane) in Bakırköy.

Beaches, Parks and Ataköy

Today Bakırköy is known for its Marmara Sea coastline, with beaches at Florya, Yeşilköy, Yeşilyurt and Ataköy, along with the Atatürk Forest — a large green space established under the country's founder. The Ataköy housing development, built from the 1960s onward, is considered a model of modern Turkish urban planning, with its numbered "Kısım" sections offering parks, shopping and cultural facilities.
