✅ What's Included
About Bahçelievler: From Byzantine Retreat to Modern District
Bahçelievler sits on Istanbul's European side, close to the historic peninsula, Fatih and Bakırköy along the Marmara coast. During the Byzantine era, the area was known as "Hepdemon" and served as a favored summer retreat for the imperial court, dotted with palaces, churches and farmland just outside the city walls. It also sat along the route used by convoys traveling between Edirne, the Ottoman Empire's first capital, and Constantinople.
After the Ottoman conquest, the area was largely abandoned by its Greek Orthodox farming population and remained mostly rural for centuries. From 1917 onward, migrants arriving from the Balkans — Bulgaria, Greece and Yugoslavia — settled in what became the Yenibosna and Kocasinan neighborhoods, continuing farming and animal husbandry in the area for decades. Bahçelievler only became an independent district in 1992, having previously been part of Bakırköy.
A Mix of Industry and History
Today Bahçelievler is one of Istanbul's busier commercial and light-industrial districts, particularly around Çobançeşme and Yenibosna, home to major food and textile producers. A handful of historic landmarks survive from earlier eras, including the Havuzlu Köşk (Siyavuşpaşa Kasrı) inside Milli Egemenlik Park, and the Byzantine-era Soğanlı Fountain. Its proximity to Istanbul's historic Atatürk Airport site made it one of the more accessible districts for development throughout the 20th century.
