Galataport Cruise Day: Istanbul Sights From the Port
Short answer: from the cruise terminal, walk about 6 minutes to the Tophane stop and take the T1 tram to Sultanahmet: 5 stops, about 10 minutes, a tram every few minutes in the daytime. Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern and Topkapı Palace are all within a 10-minute walk of each other there, and the Grand Bazaar is two more stops on the tram. Check the weekday first: Topkapı is closed on Tuesdays, Dolmabahçe on Mondays, the Grand Bazaar on Sundays, and the mosques restrict visitors around the Friday noon prayer. With 6 to 8 hours ashore, choose one area rather than three. If you would rather have a car, our private transfer from Galataport to Sultanahmet costs from €42 per vehicle.

At Galataport the tram stop is a few minutes away, and Galata Tower, the Karaköy ferry piers and the Galata Bridge are all on foot. The difficulty is not the distance. It is choosing what to see in a call that is shorter than it looks once you subtract disembarkation, queues and the walk back, and avoiding the sight that is closed on your day. This guide gives you the tram and walking times, a closures table by weekday, two plans for a 6 to 8 hour call, and a way to work out when to head back to the ship.
From the Terminal to the Tram
The T1 tram runs along the waterfront from Kabataş through Fındıklı and Tophane to Karaköy, Eminönü, Sirkeci, Sultanahmet and the Grand Bazaar area. The Tophane stop is about 6 minutes' walk from the Block D terminal entrance; Fındıklı is about 8 minutes. Trams run from about 06:00 to midnight (the last one from Tophane leaves at about 00:03) and come every few minutes in the daytime.
- Tophane to Sultanahmet: 5 stops (Karaköy, Eminönü, Sirkeci, Gülhane, Sultanahmet), about 10 minutes.
- Sultanahmet to the Grand Bazaar: 2 more stops (Çemberlitaş, then Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı).
- Fare: a visitor's Istanbulkart pays the full fare on every ride, ≈€0.85 (₺46.20) on the tram, with no transfer discount. The anonymous card costs ≈€3 (₺165) and one card can pay for a whole group if you tap once per person. A contactless bank card also works on the tram, at ≈€1.15 (₺65) per ride. See our Istanbulkart guide for how to buy and top up.
| From the port | On foot | Other |
|---|---|---|
| Galata Tower | About 1 km, 13 minutes, uphill | Steep final stretch |
| Karaköy ferry piers | 8 to 13 minutes | Tophane stop is about 6 minutes, then 1 stop |
| Sultanahmet (Hagia Sophia) | About 2.7 km, 36 minutes | T1 from Tophane, about 10 minutes |
| Dolmabahçe Palace | About 1.5 km | Short taxi at about €4 (₺230), the minimum fare |
Walking times are approximate and measured on OpenStreetMap walking routes from the Tophane side of the port. In past years the T1 was cut back for the Istanbul Marathon in November, so if your call falls on a race weekend, check the Metro Istanbul notices.
Which Day Is Your Port Call? Weekday Closures
A cruise day is fixed, so a closed palace is a lost half-day. The table shows what is shut or restricted on each weekday at the sights most cruise passengers want.
| Day | Closed or restricted | Plan around it |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Dolmabahçe Palace closed | Old city plan (A) works fully; Topkapı is open |
| Tuesday | Topkapı Palace closed | Hagia Sophia, the Cistern and the Grand Bazaar all fill the day; Dolmabahçe is open |
| Wednesday and Thursday | None of these | Everything on this list is open |
| Friday | Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque restricted around the noon prayer; Chora (Kariye) Mosque closed to visitors | Do the Cistern, bazaars or Topkapı first; visit the mosques in the afternoon |
| Saturday | None of these | Everything on this list is open |
| Sunday | Grand Bazaar closed; the Spice Bazaar stays open | Plan B works, and plan A needs the Grand Bazaar swapped for the Spice Bazaar |
Based on the official Topkapı and Dolmabahçe pages and on secondary sources for the bazaars and mosques, at the time of writing. Topkapı, Dolmabahçe and the Grand Bazaar are also closed on the first day of the religious holidays (Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı), and public holidays such as 29 October can change hours at other sights. Check the official site of the sight you most want to see a few days before your call.
- Friday mosques: Hagia Sophia closes to visitors from about 30 minutes before the noon prayer until about 90 minutes after it, and the Blue Mosque stays closed until about 14:30. Visitors are also paused for a while at each of the other daily prayers.
- MuseumPass: it does not cover Hagia Sophia, so budget for a separate ticket.
How Much Time Do You Really Have?
Your ship's daily programme gives an all-aboard time, which is earlier than the sailing time. Work from that, not from the departure time on the itinerary. A simple way to count:
- Start the clock when you actually step off the ship, not when the ship docks. On busy days, with several ships in port, disembarkation and the checks take longer.
- Stop it at least 90 minutes before all-aboard. That is your turn-back time: the moment you leave the last sight.
- Take away the tram (about 20 minutes with the walk at each end) in each direction. What is left is your time at the sights.
For a ship that docks early, a 6 to 8 hour call leaves roughly 4 to 5 hours at the sights, which is one area done well. Fitting the old city, Dolmabahçe and a Bosphorus cruise into one day usually ends in a run back to the gangway.
Plan A: The Old City Classics (6 to 8 Hours)
This is the walk most first-time visitors want. It runs in a loop, so you finish near the water with a flat walk or a tram back to the port.
- Tram to Sultanahmet (about 20 minutes from the gangway, with the walk to Tophane).
- Blue Mosque (free). It is about 5 minutes' walk from the Sultanahmet tram stop. Allow 30 to 45 minutes.
- Hagia Sophia, about 11 minutes' walk around the buildings from the Blue Mosque. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours with the queue. The visitor entrance is on the south side, opposite the Fountain of Ahmed III.
- Basilica Cistern, about 8 minutes from the Hagia Sophia visitor entrance. Allow 45 minutes.
- Grand Bazaar (not on Sundays), about 10 minutes' walk from the Cistern along Divanyolu, or two stops on the T1. Allow an hour.
- Spice Bazaar, about 12 minutes' walk from the Grand Bazaar down the Mahmutpaşa slope. Allow 30 to 45 minutes.
- Back to the port: the ferry piers are about 7 minutes from the Spice Bazaar, and the T1 from Eminönü takes you back to Tophane in two stops. Or walk across the Galata Bridge (about 12 minutes to Karaköy) and on to the port (about 11 minutes).
If you have time for only one palace, Topkapı is a 3-minute walk from the Hagia Sophia visitor entrance. It needs at least two hours on its own, so add it in place of the Cistern and the Grand Bazaar, not on top of them. It is closed on Tuesdays.
Plan B: Galata, the Spice Bazaar and the Bosphorus (4 to 6 Hours)
This plan works every day of the week, so it suits Sundays and Fridays, when parts of plan A are shut, and anyone who prefers a slower day. It is also the better choice if your all-aboard time is early.
- Galata Tower: about 1 km and 13 minutes uphill from the port. At the time of writing it opens daily from 08:30, and e-tickets are sold on the official site, galatakulesi.gov.tr.
- Karaköy: walk down the steep streets to the T1 stop (about 7 minutes from the tower).
- Galata Bridge on foot to Eminönü, about 12 minutes.
- Spice Bazaar, about 7 minutes from the Eminönü piers and open on Sundays at the time of writing.
- Optional: Süleymaniye Mosque, about 11 minutes' walk uphill from the Spice Bazaar. It is a working mosque, so expect pauses at prayer times.
- A Bosphorus cruise from Eminönü. Timetables and prices change by season and operator, so check Şehir Hatları (sehirhatlari.istanbul) and the other operators at the pier. A round trip back to Eminönü takes roughly 90 minutes at the time of writing, so it fits easily into a 6-hour call but not a short one. Check where your tour ends before you board.
- Back to the port: two T1 stops from Eminönü to Tophane, then 6 minutes on foot.
Dress Codes, Queues and Tickets
- Mosques: cover your shoulders and knees, and women cover their hair. Shoes come off and are carried in a bag. The Blue Mosque lends headscarves free of charge.
- Hagia Sophia: the foreign-visitor ticket is 25 euros at the time of writing. The ground floor is kept for worshippers, so visitors use the upper gallery route. Security queues can reach 30 minutes in high season, and the entrance is reported to be quietest before 09:30.
- Basilica Cistern: it changed operator in June 2026, and the ticket price has been reset, so check the current price on the day.
- Topkapı: the combined ticket covers the palace, the Harem and Hagia Irene, which can also be bought separately. Check the official page for the current price.
Getting Back to the Ship on Time
- Set the turn-back time before you leave the ship and write it on your phone. Use 90 minutes before all-aboard as a minimum, and more on busy days when several ships are in port and the entrance checks are slower.
- Use the tram, not a taxi, in the late afternoon. City-centre traffic is slow then, while the T1 runs every few minutes until about midnight. Sultanahmet to Tophane takes about 10 minutes, plus the 6-minute walk to the terminal.
- Taxi as a backup: Sultanahmet to Galataport is about 5 km. A yellow taxi costs ≈€5–8 (₺270–450) on the meter outside the worst traffic. Taxis must accept cards from 16 November 2026, so carry some cash until then.
- If you run late and have a transfer booked with us, call our 24/7 line on +90 544 102 1414.
Taxi, Private Transfer or Tour?
The tram is the cheapest way to the old city, and a taxi is short and inexpensive. A private car makes sense for a group of four to six sharing the cost, or for a traveller who finds the hills and cobbles hard going.
- Private transfer: Galataport to Sultanahmet from €42 per vehicle (a Mercedes Vito for up to 6 passengers), with the exact price shown before you pay. Our drivers speak English. Child seats are available on request. Book the way back on the Sultanahmet to Galataport page, or see the outward trip on Galataport to Sultanahmet.
- Where you meet: your driver waits just outside the cruise terminal. Once you disembark, they send you the exact meeting point and a short video on WhatsApp, so tell us your ship and disembarkation time when you book.
- Private tour: if you would rather not plan the day at all, we also run private Istanbul tours with your own driver. Tell us your ship and your all-aboard time when you ask. See the tours page.
- Taxis at the port: they wait on the street-level stand in front of Block E on Meclis-i Mebusan Caddesi, with queues when several ships disembark together. Read our Galataport taxi prices for the tariff and the usual traps.
Turnaround Day With a Flight Later
If you leave the ship in the morning but fly in the evening, you can still see one area. Leave your cases first. At the time of writing, Easy Point offers lockers at the Visitor Center next to the Block D entrance and on parking level P1; check the current rates and hours with them. Then follow plan B, which stays within walking distance of the port, and return for your luggage and your transfer.
Our private transfer from Galataport to Istanbul Airport is from €44 per vehicle, and to Sabiha Gökçen from €52 per vehicle, with no extra charge for traffic or flight delays. Allow 45 to 60 minutes by road to IST and 45 to 75 minutes to SAW, plus the time your airline needs for check-in. For all the options, read Galataport to Istanbul Airport and Galataport to Sabiha Gökçen. To see which ships are in port on your date, use our Galataport cruise ship schedule.

Can I walk from Galataport to Hagia Sophia?
Yes, but it is about 2.7 km and 36 minutes on foot. Most visitors walk to Tophane and take the T1 tram for 5 stops, which takes about 10 minutes.
Which sights are closed on which day?
Dolmabahçe Palace is closed on Mondays and Topkapı Palace on Tuesdays. The Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays, while the Spice Bazaar stays open. Is six hours enough to see Istanbul from a cruise ship?
It is enough for one area done well, such as Sultanahmet with the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern, or Galata Tower, the Galata Bridge and the Spice Bazaar. Do not try to fit in the old city, Dolmabahçe and a Bosphorus cruise on the same day.
How early should I be back at the ship?
Plan to leave your last sight at least 90 minutes before the all-aboard time in your daily programme, which is earlier than the sailing time. Allow more on busy days when several ships are in port and the entrance checks are slower.
Do I need to book Hagia Sophia in advance?
The foreign-visitor ticket is 25 euros at the time of writing, so check the current arrangements before you go. The entrance is reported to be quietest before 09:30, and visitors are restricted around the Friday noon prayer.
Where does my driver meet me at the cruise terminal?
