About Sarıyer: The Bosphorus's Gateway to the Black Sea

Sarıyer is one of the oldest settled areas along the Bosphorus, known in antiquity as "Simas," later associated with names meaning "Holy Mother" or "Blessed Stream" in various historical sources. Its strategic position along the strait connecting the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara made it valuable to the Byzantines and later the Ottomans, who used it as a naval base and defensive outpost, with fishing and farming sustaining its early Ottoman-era villages.

From the 16th century, Ottoman sultans began building palaces and pavilions along Sarıyer's Bosphorus shore. Emirgan Korusu, a 47-hectare grove near the water, still contains three Ottoman-era pavilions — the White, Yellow and Pink Kiosks — now used as restaurants and event spaces. The district is also home to Belgrad Forest, one of Istanbul's largest green spaces and a favorite weekend escape for the city's residents.

From Summer Village to Luxury District

Until the mid-20th century, Sarıyer's coastal villages functioned mainly as summer retreats, known for beaches and casinos that drew crowds especially on weekends. New roads built from the 1960s onward accelerated development, and coastal areas gradually filled with luxury housing, even as the 1975 Bosphorus Law attempted to control growth along the strait's protected skyline.
