About Beykoz: Royal Forests on the Bosphorus

Beykoz's known history stretches back to around 700 BC, when Thracian settlers arriving by sea are believed to have been the first people to make their home here, naming the area "Amikos" after their king. The district was brought into Ottoman territory in 1391 by Sultan Yıldırım Bayezid, more than 50 years before the conquest of Constantinople itself.

With its rich streams, fertile land, generous coastline and dense forests full of game, Beykoz became a favorite retreat of the Ottoman ruling class, who prized it above all as a hunting ground. Sultans and court officials maintained hunting parties here for centuries, particularly around Tokat Bahçesi and Çubuklu, and the district's many korus — private wooded groves — still dot the landscape today, some containing historic pavilions like the Art Nouveau-style Hıdiv Kasrı, built in 1907, and Küçüksu Kasrı, a 19th-century Ottoman summer palace.

One of Istanbul's Greenest Districts

Beykoz sits on the Asian side of the upper Bosphorus, was historically part of Üsküdar before becoming its own district, and today remains known for its forests, sea views and relaxed pace compared to central Istanbul. Neighborhoods like Çubuklu, Kanlıca and Anadolu Hisarı along the strait are popular weekend destinations for their scenery, historic mansions and waterside cafes.
