About Kağıthane: The District Named After Paper

Kağıthane's name literally means "paper house" or "paper mill," taken from a paper workshop believed to have operated here as early as the conquest of Constantinople, continuing in use until the reign of Sultan Bayezid II. Ottoman traveler Evliya Çelebi wrote in the 17th century of finding the old paper mill already in ruins, though later paper factories were established here as well, including one during the reign of Selim III in the late 18th century.

Long before that, the area appears in the historical record as early as 626 AD, when Avar forces besieging Constantinople stationed troops here and assembled a boat-based assault fleet at the mouth of the Kağıthane stream — later destroyed in a surprise attack by the city's defenders. The valley's real fame, however, came during the Ottoman "Tulip Era" of the early 18th century, when Sultan Ahmed III built the lavish Sadabad Palace and gardens here, transforming Kağıthane into a favorite retreat for the Ottoman court, famous for its canals, pavilions and tulip displays.

From Royal Gardens to Modern District

The Sadabad palace complex was largely destroyed during the Patrona Halil rebellion of 1730, though the Sadabad Mosque still stands today. Kağıthane became an independent district in 1987, having previously been a village under Şişli, and grew rapidly from the 1950s onward as migrants arrived from across Anatolia seeking work in the area's expanding industry.
