Most people stay in Sultanahmet to be on foot among Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Hippodrome, and the hotels that make that possible sit on narrow lanes beside a tram line and a pedestrian square. A booked car matters most in the last few hundred metres, where a driver with your address and your WhatsApp number saves the search.

The Last Few Hundred Metres: Hippodrome, Tram and One-Way Lanes

Sultanahmet Square follows the line of the old Hippodrome, with the Obelisk of Theodosius, the Serpent Column and the German Fountain on its former racetrack. The area around the monuments is pedestrian and the T1 tram runs through the middle of the district, which limits where a car can pull over. Hotels in Cankurtaran and Küçük Ayasofya sit on narrow, mostly one-way lanes.

Our driver goes to the door where access allows and otherwise to the nearest open corner, then walks you towards the entrance. If your hotel is near Binbirdirek, Gülhane or Sirkeci, send us the street name when you book and we will tell you what to expect.

Two Airports, Two Routes Into the Old City

The route pages carry the booking forms: Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet and Sabiha Gökçen to Sultanahmet.

How the Booking Works

  1. Search with your airport, Sultanahmet, the date and time, passengers and suitcases.
  2. Choose the vehicle. The price shown is for the whole car.
  3. Enter the lead passenger's name, e-mail, a WhatsApp number and your flight number, plus the hotel name and street.
  4. Add a return transfer if you want one, then confirm on the payment page. You pay a card guarantee online and the rest in cash to the driver.

On the day the driver waits just outside the arrivals exit. After you land, a WhatsApp message gives the exact meeting point and a short video of the way. Because we follow the flight, the car is there whether you land at 20:00 or 02:00.

Landing Late, Landing Early

Reception staff in small old-city hotels often work alone at night, so send your expected arrival time to the hotel once you know it. The driver's WhatsApp updates give you a good estimate. Check-in often starts in the afternoon; if you land early, drop the bags at the desk and walk across the square. The neighbourhood is entirely walkable, and the Istanbul Archaeology Museums beside Gülhane Park and the museum in the İbrahim Pasha Palace facing the Blue Mosque are minutes away. After a late Sabiha Gökçen landing the rail route is no longer an option, since you need to leave the airport by around 22:45 to catch the last services.

Families, Groups and Luggage

A Mercedes Vito takes up to six passengers and seven bags, which suits most families. A Mercedes VIP Vito takes four passengers and five bags in a more comfortable black interior. Larger groups travel in a Mercedes Sprinter (15 passengers, 20 bags) or a VIP Sprinter (10 passengers, 16 bags). Lanes are tight, so the driver may stop at a corner and the bags travel the last stretch by hand; the more luggage you have, the more a single private car helps. Child seats cost five euros per seat; mention the ages when you book.

Sultanahmet Back to the Airport

Book the return in the same booking or later. Your driver waits at your hotel entrance, or the nearest open corner, and helps with the bags. The drive takes about 55 minutes to either airport without traffic, so choose a pickup about 4¼ to 4¾ hours before an international flight and 3¼ to 3¾ hours before a domestic one. Leave earlier on weekday mornings and evenings. See Sultanahmet to Istanbul Airport and Sultanahmet to Sabiha Gökçen.

When the Tram, Coach or Taxi Is Enough

If you travel light and have time, public transport is cheaper. From Istanbul Airport the Havaist HVL-13 runs to Çatladıkapı on the coast road below the square, about a 10-minute uphill walk from the Blue Mosque, but the ride takes close to two hours. From Sabiha Gökçen the M4, Marmaray and T1 take about an hour and a half with two changes. A yellow taxi on the meter is about €40–52 (₺2,250–2,900) from Istanbul Airport and ≈€40–52 (₺2,200–2,900) from Sabiha Gökçen plus any toll, with no night rate. For one or two people with small bags that can be the cheaper car, and in heavy traffic the two come out close. Carry your hotel's address on paper, as not every driver knows the one-way lanes. Our guides compare every option: Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet, Sabiha Gökçen to Sultanahmet and the taxi or private transfer comparison.

Changing or Cancelling a Sultanahmet Booking

Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. From 6 to 24 hours before, the fee is 50% of the one-way price. Under 6 hours there is no refund. The date and time of a booking can be changed online until 24 hours before pickup, subject to availability. Child seats cost five euros per seat; order them on the booking form, because a seat cannot always be found at short notice. Our cancel or change help article has the steps.
