Izmir Airport: Taxi or Private Transfer?

Updated 31 October 2026

Short answer: For one or two people going into the city, take the taxi. The meter to Alsancak is about €19–24 (₺1,050–1,350), against a private transfer from €35 per vehicle, and the İZBAN train is cheaper still for a single traveller with one bag. The picture changes beyond about 60 km: to Kuşadası and Çeşme the airport list price and our per-vehicle price are almost level, and a transfer pays off once you have a group, a lot of luggage, a late landing or a hotel outside the town centre.

Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) sits about 20 km south of Alsancak, and "taxi or transfer?" has two answers depending on which way you turn. Towards the city the taxi is hard to beat on price. Towards the Aegean coast the two cost about the same, and bags, people and the time of day decide.

Izmir Airport Taxi Against Transfer: Four Destinations Compared

Taxi figures are meter estimates for normal traffic, taken from our Izmir Airport taxi prices guide; they are estimates, not official fares. The transfer price is per vehicle (a Mercedes Vito for up to 6 passengers), not per person, and the exact price for your date and pickup time is shown before you pay.

DestinationTaxi on the meterPrivate transferCheaper for one carNote
Alsancak≈€19–24 (₺1,050–1,350)from €35 per vehicleTaxiAbout 19–20 km, no airport list price, so the meter is all there is
Karşıyaka≈€28–34 (₺1,550–1,900)from €55 per vehicleTaxiAbout 29–30 km; the taxi stays well ahead on price
Kuşadası≈€82–92 (₺4,550–5,100)from €70 per vehicleAbout levelAirport list price is ≈€68 (₺3,800), just under our price; the meter is above it
Çeşme≈€94–105 (₺5,200–5,850)from €100 per vehicleAbout levelAirport list price is ≈€97 (₺5,400); motorway toll may be extra for a taxi

Read the table as a shape. Out to Urla, 49 km away, the taxi is clearly cheaper for one car. At Selçuk, 63 km out, the lines meet: the airport list price is ≈€65 (₺3,600), while a transfer starts at €60. On the coast, 85 to 100 km out, the two are within a few euros of each other, so price stops being the reason to choose.

Meter, List Price and Motorway Tolls

Izmir taxis run on the meter: ≈€0.70 (₺40) to start, ≈€0.95 (₺54) per kilometre, a minimum fare of ≈€4 (₺210), and no night rate. Waiting in slow traffic is charged at ≈€0.05 (₺4) a minute, so a jam on the ring road adds to the fare.

For out-of-town destinations the airport taxi office also publishes a list price, and you may pay either the meter amount or the list price. The list does not include Alsancak, Konak, Karşıyaka or Bornova. On the coast it is the figure to ask for: to Kuşadası it is well below the usual meter reading, and to Çeşme, Alaçatı and Selçuk it is close to it.

Tolls are the part to ask about. The Çeşme motorway (O-32) and the İzmir–Aydın motorway are toll roads, with ≈€0.95 (₺53) for a car on the Çeşme road, and the list does not say whether tolls are included. Ask the driver before you leave the rank. With a private transfer the price you see before you pay is the price for the vehicle, with all taxes and fees included, so there is no toll sum to settle on the way.

When the Taxi Is the Better Choice at ADB

For most city rides a taxi wins. If you are one or two people with a cabin bag and a suitcase, heading to Alsancak, Konak, Bayraklı or Buca, the meter is lower than our per-vehicle price and nothing needs booking. Taxis wait around the clock outside the arrivals exits of both terminals, so you can walk out and go. Nearby districts are cheaper still: Gaziemir is about €6–9 (₺350–500) and Buca about €15–21 (₺850–1,150).

A taxi also suits a change of plan. If your bags come late or you decide to go somewhere other than the hotel you gave, there is nothing to amend.

The İZBAN Train for One Traveller

If you are alone and travelling light, the İZBAN train beats both. It leaves from the station in front of the Domestic Terminal between 05:12 and 00:54, reaches Alsancak in 28 minutes without a change and costs ≈€0.70 (₺40) with an İzmirim Kart. The catch is that İZBAN does not take bank cards, so you must first buy the card, which costs ≈€3.50 (₺200). For one trip that cost matters, and it is awkward with several suitcases or small children. Our Izmir Airport bus and train guide covers the details.

When a Private Transfer Is the Better Choice

The transfer earns its place in four situations.

Alaçatı is a case in itself. The old-town lanes are narrow and busy on summer evenings, and any car stops at the nearest practical point, so you walk the last part with your bags. Tell your guesthouse when you will arrive and ask which side is easiest.

Two Taxis or One Vito: Groups and Luggage

A standard Izmir taxi is a saloon car for up to 4 passengers and usually 2 or 3 suitcases, so the boot often fills before the seats do. A family of five or six with bags needs two taxis and pays two meter fares. For Alsancak that is two readings of ≈€19–24 (₺1,050–1,350), which at current rates is more than one Vito even at the bottom of the range. So for five or six people the single vehicle is the cheaper choice, and everyone arrives together.

One Mercedes Vito takes up to 6 passengers and 7 bags. For a bigger party there is a Sprinter, and for a VIP arrival a Mercedes V-Class. Child seats cost five euros per seat; tell us when you book. For windsurf or kite gear, say so in the booking so the right vehicle is planned.

The reverse also holds. A couple with two cabin bags gains nothing from a Vito: our price is per vehicle, so four empty seats are poor value against a taxi to Alsancak or Karşıyaka.

Landing After the Last Train

The last İZBAN leaves the airport at 00:54. After that, ESHOT night buses run to Alsancak, Karşıyaka, Bornova and Şirinyer, with departures from about 01:00, 03:00 and 05:00, and Havaş has a few early-morning departures. Taxis keep running, and as Izmir has no night rate, the meter starts from the same fee at 03:00 as at 15:00.

So at night the taxi is still the cheap option into the city. The transfer's advantage is different: if your flight is delayed by two hours, the driver is there anyway. For a night landing with a coast destination, where bus times may not match your flight and the drive is over an hour, a pre-booked car is the easier choice.

Uber and Taxi Apps in Izmir

Uber works in Izmir as a way to call licensed yellow taxis, which run on the meter. Its city page lists Izmir, Bornova, Bayraklı, Kemalpaşa and Menemen; it does not say whether a car can be called to the airport, so check in the app. App taxis come from the city, so at ADB the rank outside arrivals is usually quicker.

Finding Your Ride on Arrival

ADB has two buildings, International and Domestic. Taxis wait on the arrivals level at the exits of both, and the İZBAN station is a short walk from each. If you fly in via Istanbul with bags checked through, you land at the Domestic Terminal but are sent to International Arrivals for baggage and customs, so say which one when you speak to your driver.

For a transfer, the driver waits just outside the arrivals exit. After you land, they send the exact meeting point and a short video on WhatsApp, so you only need mobile data or Wi-Fi. Drivers speak English. Our guide to meeting your driver at Izmir Airport has the full procedure.

With a taxi, take the car at the front of the queue, check the meter is running from the start fee, and have your hotel address ready on your phone. At the time of writing, ask before you get in whether the taxi takes cards, and carry enough lira; card devices linked to the meter become mandatory on 16 November 2026.

The Return Trip to the Airport

From a city hotel the easiest taxi is the one reception calls. The meter works in both directions, so expect fares close to those above, and the drive from Alsancak takes about 25 to 30 minutes on a clear road. Rush hour can make it much longer, so leave a generous margin and tell the driver which terminal you need.

From the coast the case for a transfer is stronger: a pre-booked car collects you from the hotel at the time you set, instead of a taxi you must find and agree a fare with. On summer Sundays allow an extra 30 to 90 minutes for the motorway towards Izmir. You can book the return with your arrival; see, for example, Alsancak to Izmir Airport or Çeşme to Izmir Airport.

Frequently asked questions

Is a taxi cheaper than a private transfer from Izmir Airport?

To the city, yes. A taxi to Alsancak is about €19–24 (₺1,050–1,350) on the meter, against a transfer from €35 per vehicle. To Kuşadası and Çeşme the two are almost level, so the choice rests on luggage, group size and time of day.

How much is a taxi from Izmir Airport to Çeşme?

The airport taxi office lists ≈€97 (₺5,400) to Çeşme, and you may pay either that or the meter, which we estimate at ≈€94–105 (₺5,200–5,850). A private transfer starts at €100 per vehicle. Ask the taxi driver whether the motorway toll is included.

Does the taxi price change at night in Izmir?

No. The Izmir taxi tariff has no night rate, so a meter ride at 03:00 costs the same as one in the afternoon, apart from any extra time in traffic. Taxis wait outside both arrivals exits around the clock.

Is the İZBAN train better than a taxi for one person?

For a single traveller with light luggage, usually yes on price: ≈€0.70 (₺40) with an İzmirim Kart to Alsancak in 28 minutes, 05:12 to 00:54. The card costs ≈€3.50 (₺200) and İZBAN does not accept bank cards, so for a single trip with large bags a taxi can be simpler.

Do two taxis cost more than one transfer?

A family of five or six with luggage usually needs two taxis and pays two meter fares. To Alsancak that is about the price of one Mercedes Vito, or a little more, so for a group the single vehicle is as cheap or cheaper.

Can I use Uber from Izmir Airport?

Uber works in Izmir as an app for calling licensed taxis on the meter. Its city page does not say whether a car can be called to the airport, so check in the app. The taxi rank outside arrivals is usually quicker.

Where do I meet my driver at Izmir Airport?

Your driver waits just outside the arrivals exit. After you land, they send the exact meeting point and a short video on WhatsApp. The driver speaks English and tracks your flight, with no extra charge for traffic or flight delays.

How many people and bags fit in a taxi or a Vito?

A standard taxi takes up to 4 passengers and usually 2 or 3 suitcases. A Mercedes Vito takes up to 6 passengers and 7 bags. Child seats cost five euros per seat.
