Izmir Airport to Pamukkale: Transfer, Train, Tickets and Timing
Short answer: Pamukkale is about 230 km from Izmir Airport (ADB), roughly 2½ to 3 hours by road. A private transfer is the simplest way: from €240 per vehicle (Mercedes Vito, up to 6 passengers), straight to Pamukkale village or Karahayıt, with the price for your date shown before you pay. The airport taxi list price is ≈€245 (₺13,600). The cheapest route is the regional train from the airport station to Denizli plus a minibus, but it takes well over five hours. A same-day return is possible and long, so we suggest one night in Pamukkale village or Karahayıt. Hierapolis costs 30 euros in 2026 and 35 euros from 1 April 2027, and the pedestrian gate closes at 17:00.

The white terraces of Pamukkale sit far inland, in the province of Denizli, and most visitors who come from the Aegean coast fly into Izmir and then face a long journey. This guide sets out the four ways to make the journey, how long a visit really takes, what the tickets cost and the rules that catch people out, such as the barefoot path and the early closing of the village gate.
Izmir Airport to Pamukkale: Your Options
| Option | Journey time | Cost | Changes | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | About 2½–3 hours | from €240 per vehicle | None | Families, groups, big suitcases, late arrivals |
| Airport taxi | About 2½–3 hours | List price ≈€245 (₺13,600) per car | None | Arriving without a booking |
| Regional train + minibus | Train alone about 4½ hours, then the minibus | Train fare about ₺370 in 2026, plus the minibus fare | At least one, in Denizli | Light luggage, a tight budget and time to spare |
| Coach from Izmir Otogar + minibus | Several hours, plus getting to the Otogar first | Set by the coach company | Two or more | After a night in the city |
Drive times come from routing data and the distance on our route page, and the motorway sections are sometimes narrowed for roadworks. Allow extra on summer weekends. Train and coach details are taken from published timetables and news reports, so check them before you travel.
Option 1: Private Transfer
This is the one ride that replaces the whole chain of trains and minibuses. Our driver waits just outside the arrivals exit of the terminal you land at, and after you land we send the exact meeting point and a short video on WhatsApp. Our drivers speak English. The car takes the O-31 Izmir–Aydın motorway to Aydın and then the Aydın–Denizli motorway, which opened in full in January 2025, and leaves at the Pamukkale junction.
The price is from €240 per vehicle, not per person, and the exact figure for your date and pickup time is shown before you pay. There is no extra charge for traffic or flight delays. A Mercedes Vito takes up to 6 passengers with luggage, a V-Class VIP is available for a smaller party, and a Sprinter suits larger groups. Child seats are available on request. See the full list on Izmir Airport to Pamukkale, or compare other routes on the transfer prices page.
Three hours is a long time after a flight. If you want a break on the way, ask us on WhatsApp before booking. Send your hotel name with the booking, because the village, Karahayıt and the three site gates are on different sides of the hill (see below).
Option 2: Airport Taxi
Taxis wait outside arrivals around the clock, with no night rate. The airport taxi office list gives ≈€245 (₺13,600) for Pamukkale. It is a long fare, so agree the price, and what it includes, before you set off. For other taxi fares from ADB, see our Izmir Airport taxi prices guide. At that distance a booked private transfer costs far less and the price is settled in advance.
Option 3: Regional Train and Minibus
TCDD regional trains on the Izmir–Denizli line stop at the Adnan Menderes Havalimanı station, which is connected to the terminal. According to the timetable reported in July 2026, nine trains a day leave Basmane for Denizli, the first at 07:00 and the last at 23:10. The airport stop comes about 25 minutes after Basmane, so the first train calls there at roughly 07:30. The whole run from Basmane to Denizli takes about 4 hours 45 minutes to 5 hours, so from the airport allow somewhat less. The regional fare between Denizli and Izmir rose to ₺370 on 17 August 2026, and the fare from the airport stop may be a little lower. These figures come from news reports and timetable sites, and the TCDD site is the place to confirm times and fares before you go.
From Denizli you still need a minibus (dolmuş) to Pamukkale. Minibuses reportedly leave from the lower level of the Denizli bus station about every 15 to 20 minutes, and the ride takes about half an hour. Coaches also run from Izmir Otogar to Denizli, but there is no simple daytime link from the airport to the Otogar, so the airport train is the neater public option.
The result is a journey of roughly five to six hours with at least one change, which suits a backpacker with a small bag and a free day. With large suitcases, children or a late landing, the private car is the better choice. For Izmir's other public transport, see Izmir Airport bus and train.
Day Trip or Overnight Stay?
We would rather be honest about this: Pamukkale is a long way from Izmir. A round trip is about 460 km, and the drive alone takes five to six hours in total. A same-day visit works only if you land in the morning, go straight to the site and leave before the early evening. You would spend about as long in the car as you do at the terraces, and the pedestrian entrance shuts at 17:00.
- One night in Pamukkale village: small hotels and guesthouses at the foot of the terraces. You can walk to the town entrance, and you avoid the midday crowds by arriving in the late afternoon or at opening.
- One night in Karahayıt: about 3 km north of the terraces, with the larger thermal hotels. It is nearest to the North Gate.
- A night in Denizli: useful if you take the train, but you then need a minibus each way.
Whichever you choose, give us the exact hotel name when you book. Morning and late afternoon are quieter than the middle of the day, and April–May and September–October are usually the most comfortable months. Winter is quiet, but it is cool and often rainy, and the stone is wet underfoot.
Hierapolis and Pamukkale: Hours and Gates
The archaeological site is open every day. At the time of writing, muze.gov.tr showed 08:00 to 18:00, with the ticket office closing at 17:00. The page we checked showed summer hours, and winter hours are usually shorter, so check muze.gov.tr before you go.
- South Gate: the upper gate, with car and coach parking. This is the usual way in for a transfer, and it lets you walk downhill over the travertines. It closes at 18:00.
- North Gate: on the Karahayıt side, entering through the necropolis. It closes at 18:00.
- Pedestrian (town) gate: at the foot of the terraces and a walk from the village. It closes at 17:00, an hour before the others, so plan your day around that.
Evening openings were run on summer nights in 2026 and ended on 1 October, so check whether they return next year.
Tickets and Fees
| Ticket | Foreign visitors | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hierapolis-Pamukkale | 30 euros in 2026, rising to 35 euros from 1 April 2027 | The 2027 tariff starts on 1 April 2027. Audio guide available, per muze.gov.tr. |
| Antique Pool | Separate ticket, price set by the operator | Pay on site. Check the price at the gate. |
| Museum Pass Aegean | 105 euros in the 2027 tariff | Covers the sites of Izmir, Aydın, Muğla and Denizli. |
| Aphrodisias | 12 euros in 2026 | The 2027 tariff starts on 1 April 2027, so check muze.gov.tr. |
Fees come from muze.gov.tr and from the 2027 tariff reported in September 2026. If you plan to see Ephesus and other Aegean sites on the same trip, the Museum Pass can be worth working out. See our Izmir Airport to Kuşadası and Ephesus guide for that side of the coast.
The Antique Pool
The Antique Pool, often called Cleopatra's Pool, is a warm-water pool with ancient marble columns lying under the surface. It was closed for restoration from January 2025 and reopened on 1 May 2026. It is now run by a private operator, AKG A.Ş., and muze.gov.tr lists it as open. Some older pages still say it is closed, which is out of date.
Swimming needs a separate ticket, and reports say the Museum Pass and MüzeKart are not valid there. The operator sets the price, so check it at the pool entrance. The water is reported to stay around 36 °C all year. Walking beside the pool is free. Bring swimwear if you plan to bathe, as the new visitor centre has changing rooms, showers and a restaurant.
Rules, Shoes and the Downhill Walk
- Barefoot on the travertines. Shoes are not allowed on the white path, and staff do enforce it. You carry your shoes in a bag. The stone is slippery when wet, so take your time.
- Use the South Gate and walk downhill. Start at the top by the car park, see the ruins of Hierapolis first, then descend over the terraces to the town entrance. Going up from the village means about 200 m of climbing on bare feet.
- Sun and heat. The white stone reflects the sun. In summer take water, a hat and sunglasses.
Hierapolis itself is a large spa city founded in the 2nd century BC by the kings of Pergamon, with a theatre and a necropolis. It is worth at least as long as the terraces.
A Second Day: Aphrodisias
If you stay the night, Aphrodisias makes a good second-day stop. It is an ancient city in the village of Geyre, with a stadium, a theatre and a museum. At the time of writing muze.gov.tr showed it open daily from 08:30 to 17:30, with the ticket office closing at 17:00 and an audio guide, and the foreign fee is 12 euros in 2026. Winter hours are usually shorter, so check muze.gov.tr before you go. If you want to include it in the journey back to Izmir, ask us on WhatsApp before booking.
Back to the Airport
You can book the return in the same booking, or separately as Pamukkale to Izmir Airport. Allow about three hours for the drive, and arrive at the airport about three hours before an international flight, as the airport advises. That means leaving Pamukkale around six hours before departure. For a late-night arrival or an early flight, see Arriving in Izmir at night.
