İzmirim Kart for Visitors (2026): Fares, Where to Buy, İZBAN Tips
Short answer: the İzmirim Kart is İzmir's prepaid transport card. Visitors buy the anonymous full-fare card for ≈€3.50 (₺200). A ride on an ESHOT bus, the metro, a tram or an İZDENİZ ferry costs ≈€0.65 (₺35) with the card and ≈€0.70 (₺39) with a contactless bank card, and the İZBAN train from the airport to Alsancak is ≈€0.70 (₺40) on the card only: İZBAN does not accept bank cards. Any further boarding within 90 minutes is free on the card. You can buy it at the airport, at the İZBAN ticket office (07:00–14:40 and 15:00–22:40) or at cafés in the arrivals halls. For one or two riders with light bags it is the cheapest way into the city; a family with suitcases may prefer a private transfer, which is priced per vehicle.

İzmir has one card for almost all of its municipal transport, and one catch for visitors arriving at Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB): the train that serves the airport only takes the card, and the card costs more than a few rides. Here is what you pay in 2026, when a bank card is enough, where to buy the card at the airport, how the 90-minute transfer and the İZBAN fare hold work, and what the card does not cover.
İzmirim Kart or bank card: fares at a glance
| Fare | İzmirim Kart | Contactless bank card |
|---|---|---|
| One ride: ESHOT city bus, metro, tram, İZDENİZ ferry | ≈€0.65 (₺35) | ≈€0.70 (₺39) |
| Further boarding within 90 minutes | Free | Full fare again |
| İZBAN train, first 20 km (the airport to Alsancak) | ≈€0.70 (₺40), then ₺1.50 per extra km | Not accepted |
| ESHOT night airport bus (lines 200, 202, 204, 206) | ≈€1.40 (₺77) | ≈€1.55 (₺86) |
| The card itself (anonymous, full fare) | ≈€3.50 (₺200) | Not needed |
| Bilet 35 paper ticket, 2 rides | ≈€2.50 (₺140) for the ticket | Not applicable |
Fares per person and boarding, valid from 1 April 2026 (İzmir Metropolitan Municipality). Half fares apply on city buses, metro, tram and ferries between 05:00 and 07:00 and between 19:00 and 20:00, but not on İZBAN or the airport night buses. Havaş airport buses have their own fares and don't take the İzmirim Kart.
What is the İzmirim Kart?
The İzmirim Kart is the contactless card of İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi, the metropolitan municipality. You tap it on the validator when you board. One card covers:
- ESHOT city buses, including the four night buses to the airport, which have their own fare.
- İzmir Metro and the trams (Konak, Karşıyaka and Çiğli).
- İZDENİZ ferries across the bay.
- İZBAN, the commuter railway that stops at the airport.
It does not pay for Havaş airport buses, taxis, intercity coaches or private transfers.
The standard card for visitors is the anonymous full-fare card ("hamiline"), which is not registered to anyone. A personalised card costs the same, with postal delivery extra, and the discount cards (youth, teacher, 60+) need registration, so they are not an option for a short visit. There is no separate tourist card. There is also a digital version: you create it in the İzmirim Kart app, top it up there and show a QR code to the validator. Ask the seller whether a new physical card comes with any credit already on it, as the tariff only lists the card price.
Is the card worth it for a short stay?
On city buses, the metro, trams and ferries a contactless bank card works, and the saving per ride with the card is small, so the card price is not earned back by single rides. The card pays off in three cases:
- You take İZBAN. Bank cards do not work on the trains, so the airport train from ADB needs an İzmirim Kart (or a paper ticket, see below).
- You change lines often. After one paid boarding on the card, the next boardings within 90 minutes are free. With a bank card each boarding is a new fare. A trip such as İZBAN to Halkapınar, then the metro, then a tram costs a single fare on the card.
- You stay several days and use public transport every day, including the 05:00–07:00 and 19:00–20:00 half-fare windows.
A bank card is enough if you only take a couple of city rides, if you arrive by Havaş or taxi, or if you take an ESHOT night bus from the airport (≈€1.55 / ₺86 by bank card instead of ≈€1.40 / ₺77 on the card). Whether every foreign contactless card is accepted at every validator isn't stated, so carry a second way to pay.
Bilet 35, the disposable multi-ride paper ticket (≈€2.50 / ₺140 for two rides, valid 35 days), gives no transfers and counts as three rides on İZBAN, so it is poor value for the train.
Where to buy the card at Izmir Airport
ADB sells the card at several points. The seller points listed by the airport and by İzmirim Kart are:
- İZBAN ticket office at the airport station, daily 07:00–14:40 and 15:00–22:40.
- Simpark Cafe in Domestic Arrivals, landside, opposite Kantin Café.
- Ak Ege Buffet in Domestic Departures, on the İZBAN–Metro connection bridge.
- Ekmekarası Café in International Arrivals, landside.
İzmirim Kart's dealer list also shows the airport security company TAV Özel Güvenlik at the Domestic Terminal. The opening hours of the cafés aren't published, and I could not confirm a top-up machine at the airport station, so don't count on buying a card in the small hours. The ticket office is closed from 22:40 to 07:00, while the first İZBAN train leaves at 05:12 and the last at 00:54.
If you land late or early, use something that needs no card: the ESHOT night bus with a bank card, a Havaş bus, a taxi or a pre-booked transfer. Our Izmir Airport bus and train guide has the timetables.
Buying and topping up in the city
Outside the airport you can top up the physical card at the "yüklematik" machines in stations and at the dealers listed on izmirimkart.com.tr, or load the digital card in the app. A top-up made on a physical card cannot be cancelled afterwards, so add only what you will use. İzmir Büyükşehir's call centre, 153, is named as the support line for the card and the digital card.
The İZBAN fare hold and the orange validator
İZBAN works differently from buses and the metro, because the fare depends on distance. When you tap in, the system holds the fare to the end of the line on your card. At your exit station you tap the orange refund validator, and the difference comes back to the card. The rules:
- You must ride at least one station and make no other boarding in between.
- You must tap out within 3 hours.
- If you forget, the system assumes you rode to the last station and does not refund anything.
So the card needs more than the ≈€0.70 (₺40) fare when you tap in. The hold to the far end of the line is probably well over ₺100 (our own estimate, not an official figure), so load at least ₺150 before boarding. The fare of ≈€0.70 (₺40) covers the first 20 km, and we haven't been able to confirm the exact rail distance from ADB to Alsancak (28 minutes by train), so the fare could be slightly higher.
90-minute transfers
- After your first paid boarding, all later boardings within 90 minutes are free on city buses, metro, trams, ferries and İZBAN.
- The transfer right starts 5 minutes after the first boarding.
- Tapping again on the same bus or at the same station within 30 minutes charges a full fare, not a transfer.
- There is no transfer with a bank card, a Bilet 35 ticket or on the airport night buses.
The useful combination from the airport is İZBAN to Hilal (24 minutes) or Halkapınar (37 minutes), where you change to the metro for Konak and the city centre, all on one fare if you do it within 90 minutes.
Sharing a card between travellers
The rules say that a second tap on the same validator is charged at the full fare. In practice one card can pay for companions, each at the full fare, and we found no official limit on the number of people. For İZBAN, we haven't been able to confirm how the fare hold and refund work when one card pays for several people, so give each traveller their own card for the train.
Refunds, lost cards and leaving the city
- Card price: we found no refund or deposit rule for the ≈€3.50 (₺200) card, so treat it as a purchase.
- Balance: use it up before you leave. Top-ups on a physical card cannot be cancelled.
- Lost card: an anonymous card isn't registered to you, so we can't promise that the balance can be recovered. The digital card in the app is a safer place to keep a balance.
Practical tips
- Buy the card at the İZBAN ticket office when it is open, and ask the staff what balance comes with it.
- Load enough for the İZBAN fare hold, and tap the orange validator when you leave the station.
- Carry some lira in cash and a contactless bank card as a backup for ESHOT buses, metro, trams and ferries.
- Don't re-tap on the same bus: a second tap within 30 minutes is charged as a new fare.
- Two or more people on İZBAN: one card each.
Arriving with luggage: the door-to-door option
Public transport is the cheapest way into İzmir, and this guide is written for people who want to use it. But with suitcases, children or a group, the arithmetic changes: İZBAN needs a card for every passenger on top of the fare (each card ≈€3.50 / ₺200), the station is a walk from the International Arrivals through the connecting walkway, and the ticket office is shut at night. A meter taxi to Alsancak costs about €19–24 (₺1,050–1,350), see our Izmir Airport taxi prices. A private transfer is priced per vehicle, not per person: from €35 to Alsancak or Konak (Mercedes Vito, up to 6 passengers); the exact price for your date and pickup time is shown before you pay. Your driver meets you just outside the arrivals exit; once you land, they contact you on WhatsApp with the exact meeting point and a short video showing the way.

Frequently asked questions
How much is the İzmirim Kart and what does a ride cost?
The anonymous full-fare card costs ≈€3.50 (₺200). A ride on an ESHOT bus, the metro, a tram or an İZDENİZ ferry costs ≈€0.65 (₺35) with the card and ≈€0.70 (₺39) with a contactless bank card. İZBAN trains cost ≈€0.70 (₺40) for the first 20 km, on the card only. Fares are valid from 1 April 2026.
Can I pay with a contactless bank card instead of buying the card?
Yes on ESHOT buses, the metro, trams and İZDENİZ ferries, at ≈€0.70 (₺39) a ride with no transfer price. No on İZBAN trains and district İZTAŞIT buses. The ESHOT night airport buses take bank cards at ≈€1.55 (₺86). Whether every foreign card works at every reader isn't stated, so carry some cash.
Can I buy the İzmirim Kart at Izmir Airport?
Yes. The İZBAN ticket office at the airport station sells it daily 07:00–14:40 and 15:00–22:40. Cards are also sold at Simpark Cafe (Domestic Arrivals), Ak Ege Buffet (Domestic Departures, on the İZBAN–Metro bridge) and Ekmekarası Café (International Arrivals). Café opening hours aren't published, and a top-up machine at the station isn't confirmed.
Do I need an İzmirim Kart for the İZBAN train from the airport?
Yes, or a paper ticket. İZBAN doesn't accept bank cards. The ride to Alsancak takes about 28 minutes and costs ≈€0.70 (₺40) on the card. On entry the fare to the end of the line is held, so load at least ₺150 and tap the orange refund validator within 3 hours of leaving the station.
How do 90-minute transfers work?
After your first paid boarding on the card, further boardings within 90 minutes are free on city buses, metro, trams, ferries and İZBAN. The right starts 5 minutes after the first boarding. There are no transfers with a bank card, a Bilet 35 ticket or on the airport night buses, and tapping again on the same bus within 30 minutes is charged in full.
Can several people share one İzmirim Kart?
The rules charge a second tap on the same validator at the full fare, so in practice one card can pay for companions. We found no official limit. For İZBAN, how the fare hold and refund work for several people isn't confirmed, so give each traveller their own card.
Can I get a refund on the card or the balance?
We found no refund or deposit rule for the ≈€3.50 (₺200) card price, and top-ups on a physical card cannot be cancelled. Load only what you need and use it up before you leave. The İZBAN fare hold is the exception: tap the orange validator at your exit station and the difference comes back.
Is there a tourist or discount İzmirim Kart for visitors?
No tourist card exists. Youth, teacher and 60+ discount cards need registration, so visitors use the anonymous full-fare card. A digital card in the İzmirim Kart app is also available, shown as a QR code at the validator.
Is the İzmirim Kart accepted on Havaş airport buses?
No. Havaş has its own fares and tickets, for example ≈€4.50 (₺240) from the airport to Alsancak. The ESHOT night buses to the airport do take the card, at ≈€1.40 (₺77) with no transfer.
Rather skip the ticket office?
Your driver tracks your flight and meets you just outside the Izmir Airport arrivals exit; once you land, they contact you on WhatsApp with the exact meeting point and a short video. Priced per vehicle for up to 6 passengers (Mercedes Vito): from €35 to Alsancak or Konak; the exact price for your date and pickup time is shown before you pay.
