Short answer: from a hotel in Kızılay, Ankara Esenboğa Airport (ESB) is about 30 km by road: 25–35 minutes when the roads are clear, and rush hour can double that. Kızılay is where Atatürk Bulvarı, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Bulvarı and Ziya Gökalp Caddesi cross, and its side streets hold hotels for delegates, officials, academics and students. Esenboğa is about 30 km north-east with no train or metro, so every option goes by road: a coach from across Güvenpark, bus 442, a taxi or our car.
Pickup Times for Esenboğa, Hour by Hour
Airlines differ; Turkish Airlines asks for 3 hours before an international flight and 2 before a domestic one, and closes check-in 60 and 45 minutes before departure. Add the drive and a margin: a pickup 4–4¼ hours before an international flight and 3–3¼ hours before a domestic one. On weekday mornings and late afternoons, take the earlier end.

Flying Abroad Before 16 March 2027
Since 8 October 2026, during renovation, international bag drop has moved to the domestic check-in counters (entrance doors C and D), and you then walk to the international section for passport control; airline notices give 16 March 2027 as the end date. TAV asks passengers to arrive earlier than usual, so take the earlier pickup time and ask the driver to stop by doors C and D.
When the Coaches Thin Out
AnkaraAir leaves Kızılay at 01:00, 03:00, 04:00 and 05:05, then every 10–30 minutes until 22:10; nothing leaves between 22:10 and 01:00. Bus 442 runs overnight only at 01:00, 03:00 and 05:00 from AŞTİ. For a 06:00 flight the 03:00 coach reaches the airport at about 04:00, an hour short of the 3 hours Turkish Airlines asks for, so a car or a taxi that reception orders the evening before is the safer plan.

Our Car From the Hotel Door
From €36 for the whole Mercedes Vito (6 passengers, 7 suitcases), one way. The VIP Vito (a Mercedes V-Class) takes 4 and 5; a Sprinter 15 and 20. The exact price for your date and pickup time is shown before you pay, with no extra charge for traffic or flight delays. Child seats cost five euros per seat.
Taxi on Ankara's Meter
Ankara taxis charge ≈€1.15 (₺65) to start and ≈€0.70 (₺40) per km, plus ≈€0.15 (₺7) a minute while crawling or standing, with no night rate. From Kızılay expect about €21–25 (₺1,150–1,400) in normal traffic; at rush hour the fare can end up above that. Card devices become mandatory only from 16 November 2026, so carry lira and ask for a receipt (fiş). Five or six people with suitcases need two taxis: about €41–50 (₺2,300–2,800) together.
AnkaraAir Coach Opposite Güvenpark
The stop is outside the Gama İş Merkezi, opposite Güvenpark. The fare is ≈€4.50 (₺250) per person and the ride takes about 55 minutes to an hour, longer at rush hour. Buy online by card with your passport number ready, or pay the staff at the stop.
EGO Bus 442 From Güvenpark
The cheapest option at ≈€2.50 (₺150); allow at least an hour on an ordinary city bus that fills up at rush hour. It takes the Başkent Kart, sold at Kızılay metro station; reports on paying cash on board conflict, so carry lira and a contactless card too. Havaş does not stop in Kızılay: it runs from AŞTİ only.
Which One Suits Your Trip
- One or two people with a bag each, in the daytime: AnkaraAir, or a taxi, whose meter in normal traffic usually comes out below our price.
- The lowest fare: bus 442, with light luggage and time to spare.
- The car wins for five or six people (one Vito instead of two taxis), a group leaving a conference together in one Sprinter, a hotel on a pedestrian street, a pickup before the coaches run, or a price you want shown before you go.
Sakarya Caddesi, Güvenpark and the Side Streets: Meeting the Driver
Be in the lobby a few minutes early with your luggage; the driver comes to the hotel entrance at the booked time and contacts you on WhatsApp on arrival. Around the square:
- Sakarya Caddesi and Yüksel Caddesi are pedestrian zones, so the car waits at the nearest corner on a through road; say so in the booking notes. Güvenpark, Kızılay AVM or the metro station make easy landmarks.
- Side streets off Atatürk Bulvarı: the car can normally wait at the door, but stopping is limited, so check out before it arrives.
- Similar hotel names: send the full name, street and reception number.
- Marches and celebrations: the square is the city's traditional stage for them, and nearby roads can close. If one is announced, tell us and the pickup point moves a block or two.
Staying a little further south in Kavaklıdere or around Tunalı Hilmi, use Çankaya to Ankara Airport (from €36); near the citadel, Ulus (from €33).
North Through the City to the Airport Road
From Kızılay the car heads north past Ulus, on the airport side of the centre, and out through Pursaklar on the airport road. Neither the airport road nor the ring road has tolls. The slow part is the start: the three boulevards at the square can all be busy at once, and traffic is heaviest on weekday mornings and evenings on the city side of the airport road. Weekends move much more freely.
Esenboğa has one terminal with an international (Dış Hatlar) and a domestic (İç Hatlar) section; the driver stops at the departures entrance for yours. Expect an X-ray at the door and a second check after check-in.
Booking, Payment and Changes Before Pickup
Book on the Kızılay to Ankara Airport route page. If your hand luggage makes everything too much for the vehicle you chose, the booking switches you to one that fits and shows the new price before you confirm. The payment page shows each option and its exact amount: card online (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) on iyzico's secure 3D Secure page, so we never see card details; cash to the driver in euro, US dollar, pound sterling or lira; or a booking guarantee by card with the rest in cash (how to pay).
Cancelling is free up to 24 hours before pickup; from 6 to 24 hours, a fee of up to 50% of the one-way price applies; under 6 hours, the full price may be charged. Date and time changes are possible until 24 hours before pickup (cancel or change). Booking your arrival and departure together gives a discount on the return part (return transfers); the ride to the airport costs the same as the ride from it.
