Butterfly Valley: How to Get There From Ölüdeniz and Fethiye
Short answer: go by boat from the Belcekız beach in Ölüdeniz. The crossing takes about 30 minutes and the return ticket was ₺500 in September 2026, at the time of writing. The cliff path down from Faralya is closed: gendarmerie signs warning of fall danger went up in October 2026, so the boat is the only sensible way in. Butterflies are on the wing mainly from June to September. Ölüdeniz is about 66 to 68 km from Dalaman Airport. Our private transfer costs from €53 per vehicle, and the airport taxi list fare is ≈€63 (₺3,500).

Butterfly Valley (Kelebekler Vadisi) is a narrow cove under steep cliffs near Faralya, and it has no road. Most visitors base themselves in Ölüdeniz or Fethiye and cross by boat for the day. This guide covers the boat, the closed cliff path, the best months and how to reach Ölüdeniz from Dalaman Airport. For the Blue Lagoon, the cable car and paragliding, see our Ölüdeniz Blue Lagoon guide, which we do not repeat here.
Butterfly Valley at a Glance
| What | Detail | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Boat from Belcekız, Ölüdeniz | About 30 minutes each way | ₺500 return in September 2026 |
| Boat season | Daily in peak season; November to March on demand | Peak-season boats run from about 10:00 to a last return around 18:00 |
| Cliff path from Faralya | Closed | Warning signs since October 2026; do not use it |
| Landing fee | A small fee may be collected | Bring cash |
| Butterflies | Mainly June to September | Busiest in July and August |
| Dolmuş 3-42, Fethiye to Faralya and Kabak | ₺157 on the 2-ride card | Every 2 hours; reaches the village above, not the beach |
| Dolmuş 3-40, Fethiye to Ölüdeniz | ≈€2 (₺115) per person | Every 7 to 8 minutes in the daytime |
Boat prices are set by the boat operators, not by an official tariff, and they change from year to year. A review from August 2025 recorded ₺700 for the same crossing. Treat the figures here as the level at the time of writing and check the booth.
The Boat From Ölüdeniz
The boats leave from Belcekız, the long public beach on the main Ölüdeniz seafront. The ticket booth is on the beach, and a September 2026 guide says it takes cash or card. Bring cash anyway, because a card terminal on a beach is not something to rely on.
- Crossing time: about 30 minutes each way.
- Price: ₺500 return as of September 2026. Ask whether the ticket covers the return boat and what time it leaves.
- Peak-season times: boats run from about 10:00, with the last return around 18:00. Another 2026 guide lists fixed shuttle times, so ask at the booth for the return time and write it down.
- Winter: from November to March boats run only on demand and in good sea, so the trip is easily lost to weather. Ask your hotel to phone ahead before you walk to the beach.
- Day-tour boats: organised tours often stop at the valley for only 40 to 60 minutes. The regular shuttle gives you more control, so check how long you will have ashore before paying for either.
If you stay in Fethiye, the simplest route is dolmuş 3-40 to Ölüdeniz, then the boat. Allow 20 to 25 minutes for the dolmuş, which starts running at 06:50, and aim to be on the beach by mid-morning in July and August.
The Cliff Path From Faralya Is Closed
Older blogs describe a path down the cliff from Faralya, with loose ground and rope sections. Local guides have long called it dangerous and unsuitable for casual walkers. In October 2026 the press reported that the gendarmerie had put up "fall danger, closed beyond this point" signs on the cliff routes. The area is a protected natural site, and the path is not a trail to improvise on.
So the advice is simple: go by boat. Do not use an older guide's instructions for the walk down, and do not follow other visitors past a warning sign. If you want to see the valley from above, the villages on the clifftop are described below, but that is a viewing trip, not a way to reach the beach.
Landing Fee and What to Bring
A small fee may be collected when you step ashore, so carry some lira in cash. Beyond that, plan as you would for any cove with no road:
- Cash: for the landing fee, food and drink, and anything you decide to buy on arrival.
- Water and sun protection: there is little shade on a cove under a cliff in July.
- Footwear: water shoes or sandals that stay on, for the landing and any short walk ashore.
- A dry bag or waterproof pouch for your phone and cash, because you will be getting on and off a small boat.
- The return time: know the time of the last boat. Do not leave it to the end of the afternoon.
When to Go: Butterflies and Seasons
The butterflies are Jersey tiger moths (Euplagia quadripunctaria). They are mainly seen from June to September, with the peak in July and August. In other months the cove is still a sheltered place to swim, but you are not going for the insects.
- June and September: the start and end of the butterfly season, with boats running daily.
- July and August: the most butterflies and the most crowded boats. Go on the earliest crossing you can.
- October: the season is ending. Ask at the booth the day before whether boats are running.
- November to March: on demand and in good sea only. Do not plan a fixed day around it.
Do not chase or handle the moths. The valley is a protected natural site.
Faralya and Kabak by Dolmuş 3-42
Faralya and Kabak are the villages on the ridge above the valley. They are reached by dolmuş 3-42, run by the Muğla municipal transport company (MUTTAŞ), from the Fethiye village bus station (Köyler Garajı).
- From Fethiye: every 2 hours between 07:00 and 17:00.
- From Faralya: departures between 08:30 and 18:30.
- Fare: ₺157 on the 2-ride Muğla Kart, which is the realistic visitor fare, or ₺123 on a personal card. Ölüdeniz to Faralya is ₺87 on the 2-ride card.
Because the descent is closed, this dolmuş is for the village and the views over the valley, or for a night in the hills, not for getting down to the beach. With a departure only every 2 hours, check the last return before you settle in for lunch. The timetable on the MUTTAŞ site is the one to trust, and it can change between seasons.
Getting to Ölüdeniz From Dalaman Airport
Dalaman Airport (DLM) is about 66 to 68 km from Ölüdeniz, roughly 1 hour 5 to 10 minutes by car in light traffic. Faralya is about 78 km from the airport by a routing estimate, and there is no road to the valley itself. There is no direct coach to Ölüdeniz, so public transport means changing in Fethiye.
| Option | Time | Cost (2026) | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Our private transfer | About 1 h 5 min to 1 h 10 min | From €53 per vehicle | Families, groups, luggage, late arrivals |
| Airport taxi (list fare) | About 1 h 5 min to 1 h 10 min | ≈€63 (₺3,500) per car | Arriving without a booking |
| Airport coach to Fethiye, then dolmuş 3-40 | About 1 h 30 min or more | ≈€5.50 (₺300) + ≈€2 (₺115) per person | Solo travellers on a budget |
The airport coaches meet domestic flights and have no fixed timetable, so after an international flight you may wait. Our Dalaman Airport to Fethiye and Marmaris guide has the full detail.
Our transfer is private only, in a Mercedes Vito (up to 6 passengers), a V-Class VIP or a Sprinter for larger groups, with child seats on request. The price is per vehicle, shown before you pay, and the exact price for your address is shown at booking. Our driver waits just outside the arrivals exit and, after you land, sends the exact meeting point and a short video on WhatsApp. Our drivers speak English, and there is no extra charge for traffic or flight delays. Book on our Dalaman Airport Transfer page and compare routes on transfer prices. If you want to be dropped at the Belcekız seafront or a particular hotel, or want a stop on the way, ask us on WhatsApp before booking.
For a Fethiye hotel the road is shorter: about 55 km and 55 minutes. Our transfer to Fethiye is from €44 per vehicle and the airport taxi list fare is ≈€54 (₺3,000).
Planning Your Day
- Arrival day: do not try to fit the valley in. Go to your hotel, swim at Belcekız and check the boat times at the booth for the next morning.
- Boat day: take the first sensible crossing, spend the middle of the day in the valley and come back on a boat you have already identified. Plan lunch on the Ölüdeniz seafront afterwards.
- Windy or rough days: boats do not cross in poor sea. Keep a spare day, particularly outside July and August.
- Not a day trip from the airport: a same-day trip from Dalaman means over two hours on the road for a few hours at the cove. Staying at least one night in Ölüdeniz, Hisarönü or Fethiye works much better.
Back to Dalaman Airport
Allow about 1 hour 10 minutes from Ölüdeniz, plus the airport's advice to check in 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one. Do not book a boat trip on the morning of an afternoon flight unless you have a margin for a late return. A private transfer from your hotel avoids the change in Fethiye. Book the return together with your arrival on our Dalaman Airport Transfer page.
