Izmir Airport to Pergamon (Bergama): Transfer and Visit Guide

Updated 22 October 2026

Short answer: Bergama (ancient Pergamon) is about 130–140 km north of Izmir Airport (ADB), roughly 1 hour 45 minutes by road in normal traffic. A private transfer is the simplest way: from €155 per vehicle, with the price for your date shown before you pay. The public route has two stages, a taxi or other transfer to Izmir bus station and then a coach of about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, and İZBAN trains do not reach Bergama. If you land in the morning, the Acropolis and the Asklepion fit into the same day. After a mid-afternoon landing, sleep in Bergama and visit the next morning.

Pergamon is one of the best-preserved Hellenistic hilltop cities in Turkey, with a theatre cut into a steep slope, a healing sanctuary of the Roman era and a small, well-kept museum. It is also awkward to reach: there is no train, and the airport is on the far side of Izmir. This guide covers how to get there from ADB, what is open, what is closed, and how to organise a day or an overnight stay.

Drive times come from routing data and our route page. Allow longer when the Izmir ring road is busy.

Option 1: Private Transfer

Our driver tracks your flight and waits just outside the arrivals exit. Once you have landed, the driver sends the exact meeting point and a short video on WhatsApp, so you do not need to look for anyone. Drivers speak English. The price is per vehicle, not per person, and there is no extra charge for traffic or flight delays. A Mercedes Vito takes up to 6 passengers with luggage, a V-Class VIP is available for smaller groups, and a Sprinter suits larger parties. Child seats are available on request.

The price starts from €155 per vehicle for the Vito, and the exact figure for your date and pickup time is shown before you pay. The details and a booking form are on the Izmir Airport to Bergama page. For the return leg, see Bergama to Izmir Airport.

The route runs across Izmir on the ring road, then north on the North Aegean Motorway to its northern end, and finishes on ordinary roads into Bergama. The ring road is the unpredictable part, because it slows down at rush hour. After a night flight, or with children, tell us on WhatsApp that you want a comfort stop on the way.

The old quarter of Bergama has narrow lanes. The driver stops at the nearest street the car can use, and you walk the last stretch with your bags. Send us your hotel address when you book and we will check the access.

Option 2: Taxi

Official taxis wait outside arrivals around the clock, with no night rate. We have no airport list price for Bergama to quote, so the fare would be the meter, and on a run of 130 km or more the meter adds up. Agree how you will pay before you set off, and see our Izmir Airport taxi prices guide for how the airport taxi office works. A transfer with the price shown in advance is easier to compare.

Option 3: Coach From Izmir Bus Station

There is no direct airport bus to Bergama. The public route is to reach Izmir bus station (the otogar) first, for example by taxi at ≈€28–33 (₺1,550–1,850) on the meter, then take a coach to Bergama. Coaches take about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours and run frequently during the day, according to route aggregators at the time of writing. Several companies serve the route, so compare departure times at the ticket desks on the day.

The last step matters: Bergama bus station is about 8 km from the town centre. Bergama has city lines (İZTAŞIT) from the bus station that you pay for with an İzmirim Kart, but you should expect a further local ride before you reach the old town or your hotel. With a suitcase, this chain of changes is the main reason most visitors with luggage choose a transfer. For other airport buses and trains, see our Izmir Airport bus and train guide.

İZBAN, the Izmir commuter railway, does not go to Bergama. The planned extension from Aliağa to Bergama, about 50 km, had still not been built at the time of writing.

The Sights of Pergamon

UNESCO inscribed Pergamon and its multi-layered cultural landscape in 2014. The ancient city has three parts worth planning around: the Acropolis on the hill, the Asklepion on the outskirts, and the Bergama Museum in town. All three show summer hours on the Ministry of Culture and Tourism website (muze.gov.tr) as of 22 October 2026. Winter hours are usually shorter, so check muze.gov.tr before you go.

The Acropolis

The Acropolis is open daily from 08:30 to 17:30, and the ticket office closes at 17:00. An audio guide is available. It sits on a hill of about 335 metres, with the steep Hellenistic theatre, the Trajaneum and the remains of the famous library. The frieze of the Pergamon Altar is now in Berlin, so do not expect to see it here. Foreign visitors pay 15 euros in 2026, rising to 16 euros from 1 April 2027.

A cable car runs up from a base station in the north-east of town. It is owned by Bergama Municipality and operated by Akropolis Teleferik, and the line is about 700 m long with 8-person cabins, a ride of roughly 4 to 8 minutes. The operator lists 08:30 to 17:00, and hours can vary with the season. Check the current fare at the lower station or on the operator's site (akropolisteleferik.com.tr, phone 0232 631 08 05). The hilltop has little shade, so take water.

The Asklepion

The Asklepion was a healing sanctuary in Roman times, and the physician Galen worked here. It is about 3 km from the Acropolis and has the same opening hours, 08:30 to 17:30 with the ticket office until 17:00. The foreign-visitor fee is 13 euros in 2026, rising to 15 euros from 1 April 2027. A car or taxi is the easiest way to link it with the Acropolis.

Bergama Museum

The archaeological museum was built in 1933–36 and holds finds from the Acropolis, the Asklepion and the Red Basilica. It is open daily from 08:30 to 17:30. The 2027 tariff lists the foreign-visitor fee at 5 euros from 1 April 2027. The fee shown on the ministry page for the current period is out of date, so ask at the ticket desk. It makes a good first stop or last stop, since it explains what you have seen on the hill.

The Red Basilica Is Closed

The Red Basilica (Kızılavlu) in the town centre is closed. It has been under restoration since March 2025, and muze.gov.tr shows it as closed (Kapalı) as of 22 October 2026. A reopening was planned for 2026, but no date has been confirmed, so do not build your day around it. Some older guides still list it as open.

A Suggested Order for the Day

  1. Acropolis first, at 08:30 if you can. The hilltop is exposed, and early in the day it is cooler. Allow most of a morning, including the cable car.
  2. Lunch in town. The old quarter is below the hill.
  3. Asklepion in the afternoon. Keep an eye on the clock: the ticket office closes at 17:00.
  4. The museum either before the Acropolis, for context, or after the Asklepion if you arrive before closing time at 17:30.

As a rough guide, plan on at least half a day for the Acropolis and the Asklepion together, and more if you want the museum and a proper lunch.

Day Trip or Overnight?

A same-day visit from Izmir Airport works only if your flight lands early. The drive takes about 1 hour 45 minutes, and the sites close at 17:30. With a landing before about noon, you can be at the Acropolis by early afternoon, but you will still be racing the closing time. A landing in the afternoon calls for an overnight stay.

The best plan for most travellers is one night in Bergama. Drive up on the day you land, rest, and start at the Acropolis when it opens at 08:30. On the way out, leave Bergama with a good margin before your flight, because the road back to ADB takes about the same time, and the ring road can be slow.

For a same-day trip with a driver who waits at the sites, ask us on WhatsApp before booking. We will confirm what is possible and quote for it. For a late arrival, see arriving in Izmir at night, and for the airport itself see our Izmir Airport guide. Heading south afterwards?
