Pergamon is worth the drive, and Adnan Menderes Airport is the usual way in. Your private driver tracks your flight, meets you just outside the arrivals exit and covers the long run north to Bergama, so you can sleep off the journey instead of working out bus connections.
✅ What's Included
The long drive from ADB to Bergama
Be ready for close to two hours on the road. From the airport the driver crosses İzmir on the Ring Road (O-30), takes the North Aegean Motorway (O-33) to its northern end, and then finishes on the D-550 and D-240 into Bergama town. In normal conditions the journey takes 95 to 120 minutes, and the ring road at rush hour adds to that. Say on WhatsApp if you want a comfort stop on the way; it is a sensible idea for children or after a night flight.
Pergamon, the Asklepion and the town below
Bergama is the modern town beneath ancient Pergamon, which UNESCO inscribed in 2014 as Pergamon and its Multi-Layered Cultural Landscape. On the 335-metre acropolis hill you find the steep Hellenistic theatre, the Trajaneum and the remains of the famous library and the Pergamon Altar, whose frieze is now in Berlin. The Red Basilica stands in the town itself, and the Asklepion, the healing sanctuary where Galen worked, lies about three kilometres south of the acropolis. Bergama also has an archaeological museum, an old Ottoman quarter and a long tradition of carpets.
Where the car can and cannot go
The old quarter has narrow lanes, so the driver stops at the nearest accessible street and you walk the last stretch with your bags. Small hotels and guesthouses cluster near the Red Basilica and the museum, but we cannot vouch for each of them, so send the address and we will check the access. The acropolis can be reached by road or by the Bergama Acropolis Gondola from its base station in the north-east of town; we have not checked the gondola's current opening status.
Is there a public option from the airport?
Not a direct one. Buses and minibuses run to Bergama Otogar from İzmir Otogar, which takes about two hours on the fastest services, and there is no rail link because the town lies some 26 kilometres inland. You would first reach İzmir Otogar from the airport, which means a change with luggage. We found no Havaş line to Bergama. Many guests flying into İzmir for Pergamon simply book the car and keep the first evening free.
A Mercedes Vito seats up to six with their bags; VIP guests can request a Mercedes V-Class. After you land, the driver sends the exact meeting point and a short video on WhatsApp.
Planning your first eveningA late landing and a drive of close to two hours mean you may reach Bergama after dark. Archaeological sites generally keep daytime hours, so treat the first night as a rest and start at the acropolis early the next day. The path up the hill is steep and the stone uneven, so bring water, a hat and shoes with grip. The Asklepion lies about three kilometres south of the acropolis, so many visitors give each site its own half day.
Staying overnight near the old quarter? Share the guesthouse name before you fly, since the driver will tell you where the car can stop and how far the walk is.
>🔁 Going home: Bergama back to İzmir Airport
You can book the way back in the same booking: choose a return trip on the booking form and enter the date and pickup time for your flight home. On the day, your driver waits at your hotel entrance or your address at that time and helps with your luggage.
From Bergama the drive back takes about 100 minutes without traffic, so for an international flight choose a pickup about 5¼–6 hours before departure, and about 4¼–5 hours before a domestic flight. For a flight at 18:00, that means a pickup between about 12:00 and 12:45.
Traffic: İzmir traffic is heaviest on weekday mornings and evenings on the ring road and the roads into the airport; in summer the roads to and from Çeşme and Kuşadası are much slower at weekends and on public holidays, so leave earlier then.
