Bala is a rural district at about 1,300 metres, south-east of Ankara, with Esenboğa far across the city on the opposite side. That is a journey of well over an hour even in good conditions, then add the time needed to get through check-in. For anything but a late-day flight, you are likely to be on the road before breakfast.
The weather matters too. Winters on the plain are cold and snowy, so for flights between December and February we suggest leaving a little earlier than the summer schedule, and keeping your phone charged in case the driver needs to reach you.
Village pickups and exact addresses
With 55 neighbourhoods, many of them distant villages, Bala is not a place where a district name is enough. Tell us the village, the lane or farm, and the name of a landmark such as the mosque or a shop. Share a phone number that works at the pickup point, and if possible a map pin sent by WhatsApp.
- From Beynam forest: the pine woods are away from Bala town, so tell the driver which entrance or picnic area you will be waiting at.
- From the Kesikköprü lake shore: say which side of the dam lake on the Kızılırmak you will be on.

📍 Bala: high-plain farm country south-east of Ankara
Bala is a rural district south-east of Ankara, on a high plain at about 1,300 metres. Its small town is busy with shops and workshops, while the countryside grows wheat, barley, sunflowers, lentils and melons, and the Kızılırmak river runs through the district. Atatürk passed through Bala on 26 December 1919, the day before he first reached Ankara.
For people from Ankara, the district means picnics. The pine woods of Beynam and the Kesikköprü dam lake on the Kızılırmak are among the province's best-loved outdoor spots, and the area also has prehistoric mounds such as Beynam Höyük, with finds from the Chalcolithic period.
- Spread-out villages: Bala has 55 neighbourhoods, many of them distant villages, so the village name is essential.
- Picnic spots: Beynam forest is well away from Bala town, so give it as the destination if that is where you are going.

🛫 Bala to Ankara Esenboğa Airport: when to leave for your flight
The drive takes about 80 minutes without traffic. Most airlines ask you to be at the airport about 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic one, so from Bala plan a pickup about 4¾–5½ hours before an international flight and 3¾–4½ hours before a domestic flight. Always follow your own airline’s advice.
Example: for an international flight at 14:00, book your pickup for between about 08:30 and 09:15.
