About Sultangazi: An Ancient Road Meets a Modern District

Sultangazi takes its name from Sultan Orhan Gazi, the second Ottoman ruler, who conquered the area during his reign between 1326 and 1359. Despite being one of Istanbul's newest districts — created in 2008 by merging neighborhoods from Gaziosmanpaşa, Eyüpsultan and Esenler — the land it sits on has a much longer history, having formed part of the Roman-era Via Egnetia trade route once used by camel caravans traveling between Constantinople and Thessaloniki.

Water has always been central to the district's story. Before the Ottoman conquest, a 242 km aqueduct built under Emperor Constantine carried water from the Yıldız Mountains through this area, and remnants of its stone arches survive today alongside Genoese-era gallery ruins found along the Cebeciköy stream — some of the strongest physical evidence of Byzantine-era water systems anywhere near Istanbul.

From Military Testing Ground to Growing District

In the 20th century, the district's southern section, then known as Sultançiftliği, hosted a military firing range used for NATO exercises — even visited on one occasion by the Shah of Iran, whose viewing spot gave a nearby hill its name, "Şahtepe." From the 1950s, waves of migration from Anatolia transformed the area from scattered rural villages into a dense urban district.
