About Ümraniye: From Pine Forest to Populous District

According to historical sources, the first people to settle in the Ümraniye area were the Phrygians, who considered the pine tree sacred and are said to have planted forests stretching from Küçük and Büyük Çamlıca all the way to Alemdağ and Kayışdağı. The area was so thoroughly forested that it was once known as "Ormaniye" — "the forested place" — before later Roman and Byzantine rule. The district's earliest known name, however, was "Yalnız Selvi" ("Lone Cypress"), describing a small area with a few graves, cypress trees and houses scattered among the woods.

In 782 AD, the Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid's forces reportedly advanced as far as nearby Üsküdar (then Chrysopolis) and camped in the area for a year, before being repelled by Byzantine Empress Irene's army and forced to pay an annual tribute of 70,000 gold coins. In the early 17th century, Sultan Ahmed I granted the land as a religious endowment to Şeyh Aziz Mahmut Hüdai, and it remained endowment property attached to Üsküdar for centuries. Its first modern settlers arrived as migrants from Batum, Bulgaria and the former Yugoslavia following the Balkan Wars, briefly earning it the nickname "Muhacirköy" — "Migrant Village."

Rapid Growth Since the 1970s

Ümraniye remained a small village until industrial development from the 1970s onward triggered rapid growth. It became an independent district in 1987, and today it's one of Istanbul's most populous districts, with a diverse economy spanning small-scale manufacturing, textiles and services.
