About Çekmeköy: Forests, Springs and Ottoman Legacy
Çekmeköy's origins trace back to the Ottoman-era Alemdağ Forest, parts of which are believed to be 300 to 500 years old. During Ottoman times, the forest belonged to the Atik Valide Sultan religious endowment, which settled woodcutters, coal-makers and cart-drivers in villages like Alemdağ and Sultançiftliği to supply firewood for the Sultan's palace and Üsküdar's mosques — a system recorded in detail in 19th-century Ottoman tax registers.
For most of its history, Çekmeköy was a small, sparsely populated village under Üsküdar and later Ümraniye district. Its population barely grew for over a century — just 364 people in 1935, and still under 500 by 1958 — before industrial growth in the 1970s and internal migration transformed it, pushing the population past 70,000 by 2007. Çekmeköy became its own independent district in 2008.
