About Sancaktepe: A Byzantine Palace and an Ottoman Judge

Sancaktepe is a relatively young district on paper — created in 2008 by merging the Sarıgazi and Yenidoğan settlements from Ümraniye district with Samandıra from Kartal district — but its history reaches back much further. Samandıra is home to the ruins of Damatris Palace, a Byzantine imperial summer residence built under Emperors Maurice and Tiberius between 578 and 602 AD, considered one of the most significant surviving Byzantine structures of its kind. The area came under Turkish control in 1328, when Orhan Gazi captured Samandıra.

Sarıgazi, meanwhile, is said to have been founded after the conquest of Constantinople, when the district's land was granted to a soldier known as "Sarı Kadı" ("the blond judge"), who took part in the conquest — giving the settlement its name. A lodge he reportedly built here around 1554 was later rebuilt as a mosque in the 1580s under Nurbanu Valide Sultan, mother of Sultan Murad III.

From Quiet Villages to a Growing District

Both Samandıra and Sarıgazi remained quiet, largely rural settlements until the 1970s, when Istanbul's shift from agriculture to industry triggered heavy migration from rural Anatolia. Sitting between Istanbul and Kocaeli — two of the country's biggest migration destinations — the area absorbed much of this growth, and continues to develop today thanks to its connections to Sabiha Gökçen Airport and the TEM motorway.
