About Sultanbeyli: A Strategic Gateway with a Legendary History

Sultanbeyli's history reaches back to Roman and Byzantine times, when the area stretching from Üsküdar to Gebze served as a "tekfurluk," or administrative center. Aydos, the historic fortified town and castle within today's district borders, sat along the ancient route used by peoples migrating through the region, making it a critical staging point along the main road connecting Anatolia to Constantinople — the same route later known as Bağdat Caddesi.

Because of this position, Aydos was seen as a strategic "key" that Turkish forces needed to capture before any successful siege of Constantinople. According to local legend, the Ottoman raider commander Abdurrahman Gazi (also known as Gazi Rahman) later married a local woman who had reportedly seen him in a dream before the conquest — a story remembered locally as an example of the tolerant relations built between Turkish and Greek communities during the Ottoman expansion. His tomb lies in neighboring Sancaktepe district today.

From Ottoman Estate to Modern District

Much of Sultanbeyli's land later belonged to Cemile Sultan, sister of an Ottoman sultan, before being sold to Ottoman Naval Minister Hasan Hüsnü Pasha in 1893. The district has since grown into one of Istanbul's residential areas on the Asian side, shaped heavily by internal migration over the 20th century.
