About Pendik: 5,000 Years of Continuous Settlement

Pendik is one of Istanbul's oldest inhabited sites, with historical sources tracing settlement here back to around 5000 BC. Excavations at the Pendik Mound have uncovered oval and round hut foundations, and archaeologists have found Neolithic-era remains near the coast believed to date to around 6500 BC, along with burial sites — some of the earliest evidence of settled life anywhere in the Istanbul region.

Due to its strategic location between the Bosphorus and the Sakarya River, the area changed hands many times over the centuries — Macedonians, Romans, Byzantines and others all controlled it at different points. Its oldest known name was "Pantikapion," later "Pantichion" under Byzantine rule — a name meaning "surrounded by walls on every side," a reference to the area's role as a defensive frontier against attacks from the east. The modern name "Pendik" evolved from this ancient root over the Ottoman period.

A Historic Stopover Between Continents

Throughout history, Pendik's most consistent role was as the first resting point for travelers heading from Europe toward Asia. The Ottomans took permanent control under Yıldırım Bayezid around 1400, following the earlier Battle of Pelekanon in 1329-1330. Pendik became its own district in 1987.
