About Tuzla: From Salt Pans to Turkey's Shipbuilding Capital

Tuzla's history stretches back to at least the 7th century BC, and the district was known in Byzantine-era texts as "Akritas Burnu," home to a Greek fishing village once used as a base by pirates operating between Istanbul and İzmit. A Byzantine lord from nearby Aydos is said to have fortified the settlement with a castle, before it passed into Turkish hands under the Ottoman commander Abdurrahman Gazi. The district's modern name comes from the salt pans that operated here during Ottoman times, which shaped the local economy for centuries.

Tuzla remained a small coastal community focused on farming and fishing until well into the 20th century. Everything changed in 1969, when the government designated Tuzla's Aydınlı Bay as an official shipbuilding zone, and shipyards previously scattered around the Golden Horn, Tophane and İstinye began relocating here from 1982 onward. Today Tuzla is home to Turkey's largest concentration of shipyards, alongside major organized industrial zones and a free trade zone.

A Center for Maritime Education

Tuzla is also a hub for maritime and technical education, home to Sabancı University, Piri Reis University, Istanbul Technical University's Maritime Faculty, and the Turkish Naval War College. Along with its industrial side, the district has 13 km of coastline, much of it open for walking, alongside restaurants and shopping areas.
