About Maltepe: The Legend of the Treasure Hill

Maltepe's history stretches back to the Byzantine era, when the area was known as "Bryas" (or "Urias" in Latin), and possibly also referred to as "Pelekanon." The 9th-century Bryas Palace, whose ruins were found near modern Küçükyalı, is believed to be connected to this earlier name, though firm evidence linking the two is limited. The Seljuk Turkish leader Süleyman Şah briefly captured the area in the 11th century, and it was later reconquered for the Ottomans by Orhan Gazi in 1329.

The district's modern name is said to come from Turkish settlers who arrived later and named a nearby mound "Maltepe" — meaning "treasure hill" or "goods hill" — after tumulus-style burial mounds believed by locals to contain buried riches. A well-known local legend also centers on the "Maidens' Monument" (Bakireler Anıtı) on the coast, tied to Greek mythology and once visited by young women hoping to marry.

Home to One of Turkey's Largest Coastal Parks

Maltepe became an independent district in 1992, having previously been part of Kartal. Today it's known above all for Maltepe Sahil Parkı, one of Istanbul's largest coastal parks and one of Turkey's biggest gathering spaces for public rallies and events, alongside walking paths, cycling routes and picnic areas that stretch along its Marmara Sea coastline.
